Maybe Tom Morris asked himself:ย  is it time to upset Bevo again.ย  Morris would know the skeletons hiding in every club's closets.

there's a reason they're professional sportsmen not professionals

You are kidding yourself if you think this is just the domain of sportspeople and NOT professionals.

The difference is that there is the public media profile that goes with being a sportsperson that most cannot competently manage.

Disagree.

The narrative is already being shaped:

May - 'He has history this bloke. Horrible look. So much damage. Obviously a trouble maker....'

Smith - 'We need to think about his mental health. Poor fella must be struggling. Needs our support...'

oh, so bailey smith doesn't have history? mmmmm

Steven May has only held the title โ€˜Australiaโ€™s Dumbest Footballerโ€™ for a week & in comes Bazlenka to steal it ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm not getting that read out of the media with May, but he does have history, admittedly being hit by team mates :D.ย  I don't think people are piling on him as a troublemaker, but they are saying he'll have to earn the trust back of his team mates, the club and supporters, and that is a fair enough call is it not?

Similarly Smith has flagged he has mental health issues and absolutely needs the support of his club and others.ย

The white bag with Smith, and the fight with May/Melksham, cannot be condoned, but equally they should receive support from those around them.

Steven May will be completely forgiven when he next plays a great game

Thatโ€™s how it worksย

I agree both deserve support.

But...

Here's an example of the differing narratives already:

How will history remember Steven May the person?

This is where things become a bit more complicated. Many players go through their careers without an off-field blemish. May, clearly, is not one of those. The now much-publicised incident in which the 30-year-old was involved in a boozy scuffle with teammate Jake Melksham is, unfortunately for May, not his first rodeo. Indeed it is not even his first alcohol-fuelled fight with a teammate.

Back in 2013, when May was still a youngster with the Gold Coast Suns, his jaw was broken by veteran Gold Coast antagonist Campbell Brown in a tussle during a late-year trip to the United States. Brown, who himself had priors, was sacked for his role in the dust-up, but May also apologised for his part in the scandal.

In 2019, May apologised to Demons teammates after it emerged that he had been drinking while injured, only a few months after the Dees had paid a heavy price to acquire him via trade. Melbourne did not formally sanction May over the incident, which came against a backdrop of him dealing with personal turmoil.

At that stage, Melbourne was languishing near the foot of the ladder and May was shaping, albeit early, as a failed recruit.

Steven Mayโ€™s reputation for off-field drama rivals his on-field stature as one footyโ€™s best and toughest backmen

โ€œWhat the Doggies have to do is make sure this kid is OK because he is going to be rock bottom right now,โ€ Hodge told SEN.

โ€œThere will be out there saying yeah so he should be and fair enough in that opinion, but the most important thing for the next few weeks or few months while he is trying to improve or make up for any mistake he might have done, he is going to be rock bottom.

โ€œIt is a big job for his friends and his family and the Western Bulldogs and they need to look after him.โ€

An AFL great has called on the Western Bulldogs to check on the welfare of Bailey Smith

ย

"Sources familiar with Smithโ€™s situation have confirmed to The Age that the photograph was taken late last year, at a time when Smith had taken a mental health break from pre-season training".

Smith will be making a statement on Saturday regarding the images.

...the club is attempting to gather precise details about the photograph and what was in the bag before deciding on what action to take"

Perhaps, at least sometimes and not necessarily in this case, something else has very recently โ€œgone through their mindsโ€.

The evidence is in the Pictureย

he is off his box

Yes. He appears to be โ€œoff his boxโ€ but it could be just his natural state and as I said there was nothing in the photos showing him snorting anything.ย

They're never going to be the 'news breakers' in a situation like this, they'll always be cautious.

Can't wait to see the BS token punishment that comes of this and the story being very quickly swept under the rug.

i can see a mental health attack coming on

that'll put the brakes on the media

dogs do seem to have a chequered history in this respect

It must have been up earlier because SEN referred to the issue at the start of Cruch Time this morning at 11.00am
