This is what Pert had to say on SEN

Demons chief executive Gary Pert said the club had planned for the event of a Covid outbreak but admitted it was still a waiting game to see if any more players tested positive.

“We had scenario planned before the season started, we knew at some stage these things would happen,” Pert said on SEN.

“It’s been handled very calmly … I think we are still looking very strong for the weekend.

“We will still have to wait and see. It’s one of those things, each day the players are testing and you just have your fingers crossed.

“So we’ll wait and see if anything else happens today, they are not training.

“It’s a day to day thing, we knew that this would happen at some stage during the year and you be prepared for it.”

Pert hoped the short-term pain now could prevent any more issues deeper into the season.

“Most of the players in the pre-season and the early parts of the season have already had Covid,” Pert said.

“The players now that have got it are some of the last players and we were very aware that Goody and some of the coaches hadn’t had it.

“So in some ways, while it’s a bit uncomfortable this week, maybe it’s a good thing as we get further into the season that more of the players and coaches are now going through this now.”

Pert said the club had put in place “strict rules” above the league and government protocols since the pre-season to help limit potential spread.

“We have been very strict the whole pre-season up until this stage, which is why we have still had quite a few of our players not get it until this point,” Pert said.

”Anyone that has symptoms is either at home or not even part of the meetings or interactions with others and that goes for players or staff members.

“We don’t have any non-essential staff within the football program during the week or on game day.

“We have put in place pretty strict rules, way over the top of what the state government or the AFL have put in place and this has really been our first little bit of an outbreak.”

You don't know the circumstances so don't be so judgemental. There are plenty of people who have contracted Covid who have not necessarily done anything wrong.

There was never going to be the scenario that we wouldn't lose some staff and players due to this pandemic now that thugs have opened up even more.

Loges perhaps you could go back in your underground cave and we will ring you  when it's safe to circulate.

It's disappointing but we have 2 players returning for 3 at this stage and list wise Hibbo is now available so overall at this stage we are no worse on the playing list but  coach down.

Time  will tell if more damage but let's hope not .

Yeah totally unnecessary response to a lighthearted post .

Thanks Mazer, the long winded one should perhaps take more time to read through posts properly.

Very reassuring if true that a lot of the players have actually already had it.

Is it weird I'm actually excited to see how our 'depth' rise to the occasion?

Obviously we want our best 22 in every game but I'm happy to persist with Weed and Dunstan for a bit longer and keen to see some fresh faces like Laurie, Bedford, Rosman or Chandler get a guernsey.

All this consistent winning football with a similar healthy 22 each week is just foreign to me and it's taking time to get used to it....

Well don't make lighting  of a serious situation that affects players staff fans snd families.

Your  comment  was not appropriate as any one reading your comment would ask What  did they do to get Covid?  And immediately lay blame.

Clesrly you are not a comedian Loges .

We will win cause we are a champion team. Great to see the depth players get a chance and great to see us win games, when challenged by outside factors.

Carlton still making a case that they would have won the flag if not for their ruckman going down..

I have a similar feeling our best 22 is so settled that these recent events give our depth and fringe players crucial exposure to the top level, particularly given the impacted vfl comp in the last 2 years.

One thing of concern that Pert did say is this: ”Anyone that has symptoms is either at home or not even part of the meetings or interactions with others and that goes for players or staff members."

This seems to indicate that there are some people at the club that currently have symptoms.

That's not how I read that line.

But the 'best ' news seems to be that nearly everyone has already had it

Altho the question was about additional precautions this week, I took Pert's response in the context of what precautions the club has had in place since pre-season.  Pert said we have had very strict rules this year and people stay home if they have symptoms.  The strict rules in place are over and above those of AFL and governments.

...too optimistic a take on my part?

Clearly you have not read through the posts, even another poster has tried to explain to you what I was talking about. The post was in reference to MFCSS and nothing else. To my knowledge this has only ever been a lighthearted topic on this site. If you had have bothered to read through the conversation you would have realised. Why would I have a crack at anyone who has got covid. Too busy being self righteous to wonder?

Take it easy, fellah. If you’d bothered to go back and learn the context of Loges’s post before next-level knee-jerking you’d know he was referring to a relapse of MFCSS and NOT covid.

Edit: Yeah nah, I just noticed someone else has tried to enlighten you, but to no avail. Ima leave the convo now since this is not worth a warning from the mods, which is how pretty much any interaction with you ends

WCW out ✌️

I didn't see anyhting in Pert's strict rules about players not mingling with the crowd after a match.  How about leaving that unti the end of the GF?

I think he did.  He said they had been conservative but allowed post game contact but would (and will) pull it back if there was a need to.  I think we will no longer see players hi-5 etc fans over the boundary fence.

So @WalkingCivilWarwas lucky to slap hands with Max after the GWS game but this is now unlikely with her 'dreamboat', man, Steven May. 🙃

We're one of the best placed teams to cover this kind of thing IMO. Goody and Yze are very much a team rather than boss and assistant. Also a great run for Yze who I reckon will be coaching either Port or GWS next year.

For the facepalmers....

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
