Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Please excuse my ignorance, but going by the MFC website it says that “at this stage all 3 players will have completed their isolation period prior to playing st. kilda”.

So does this mean that at the moment they are considered close contacts only?

If you test positive you need to isolate for seven days in Victoria.

Even if you are a close contact (effectively live in the same house), as of Friday last week, you don’t need to isolate if you are testing negative on RATs and adhere to some other requirements.

https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/checklist-contacts#what-type-of-contact-are-you

So that means Goodwin and the three players have all tested positive. Which means depending on severity of symptoms they may not be fit to play (or coach) in round 8 even if by the rules they are available.

Prior to the change in rules last week it was not possible to tell simply from “Health & Safety Protocols” whether the player tested positive or had tested negative but was a household contact.

For non-Victorian based players there may be other rules as to what constitutes a close contact and what restrictions are placed on them which I’m not across.

Victoria has changed the rules about close contacts but the AFL has not. They stated last Friday that all Health & Safety Protocols would remain in place till seasons end.

Do you have a source on that? I can’t find it and would expect news of the AFL applying stricter requirements than state governments apply (and therefore choosing to increase the likelihood of COVID disruption on the league) would be pretty easy to locate.

Spargo and Bedford supposedly live with Pickett, and if that’s true, how can they also not be in isolation if the close contact isolate requirement remains?

Kozzie shares a house with Spargo and Bedford. I did wonder at that situation but they may have already had it as you said. A good thing that the close contact rules have changed. As an aside, Tuesday last week I stopped at the Cheeky for a coffee, a black Ford Ranger parked in front of me and Koz and Toby got out. Didn't get a chance to talk to them as they looked to be in conversation with one of their sponsors. I don't know the gentleman but I did hear part of the conversation and I do know both players have a common sponsor.

That can't be right. We're the Melbourne Football Club. We don't have common sponsors. We have up-market, classy ones befitting of our status.

This is my understanding too. A question to Yze suggested both Lever and Viney could have played last week because the rules in Victoria for close contacts had changed.  Yze replied that they couldn't play because they were both positive cases, not just close contacts.

Max (early in this interview) confirms that Bedford does indeed live with Jacko and Kozzy and has so far been one of the only players to dodge COVID and is still COVID free and has moved out temporarily from the shared house.

Max also confirmed that players do RAT tests at home before they leave for training.

Lets hope the immunity from having covid lasts till end of September so we can have a clear run at finals.

What?!

More players with COVID-19 already?

As Dan Andrews said in every second presser - "this thing spreads like wild fire".

I'd say we'd be naïve to think there won't be more players to test positive through to Saturday.

I just hope we don't have too many players out whereby winning this week would be a bridge too far. Would hate to waste a loss on an average side such as Hawthorn considering our tough second half fixture.

You don't know the circumstances so don't be so judgemental. There are plenty of people who have contracted Covid who have not necessarily done anything wrong.

There was never going to be the scenario that we wouldn't lose some staff and players due to this pandemic now that thugs have opened up even more.

Loges perhaps you could go back in your underground cave and we will ring you  when it's safe to circulate.

It's disappointing but we have 2 players returning for 3 at this stage and list wise Hibbo is now available so overall at this stage we are no worse on the playing list but  coach down.

Time  will tell if more damage but let's hope not .

listening to it now. its neither here or there. Doesnt confirm that its just the 3 but doesnt say its anymore either. Just takes the conservative approach and says that we are waiting to see if anything more develops today, which is a sensible response as you dont want to say its just the 3 but then have more develop symptoms or return a positive result throughout the day.

i choose to look at this a bit more optimistically.

There are some who suggest that Covid is no worse than a common cold.

Like flus and other viral  infections, there are differing degrees of severity and recovery. Most people avoid hospital.

Footballers are fit strong young people and should avoid the worst of it. But the experience of many is that the after effects of Covid can last for weeks and sometimes months. A little like a severe flu or glandular fever. And we now have the medical diagnosis of “long Covid”. Although most can go about their daily lives without any trouble, on-going fatigue and aches and pains is extremely common. Footballers are supremely fit but like all top line athletes are always prone to infection (and injury). They push their bodies which compromises their resistance to infection.

So the concern with Covid infection is the longer term impact on the body and its ability to cope with heavy physical demands.

And most GPs will tell you that RATs tests are pretty useless. They will come back with a negative result but often test positive on PCR.  The only reliable test is the PCR.

For players who test positive it is important that they not be rushed back and are managed with the full season and finals in mind.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
