Neil Crompton 5,852 Posted May 5, 2022 Posted May 5, 2022 I just wanted to respond to some of the earlier posters who almost tried to shame members who do not attend matches regularly. Well I’m putting my hand up to admit that I am a member and I rarely go to matches. That’s not to say I don’t care - far from it. I love the MFC (I’d be an [censored] to be on DL if I didn’t), but I also love my wife, my children, my grandchild, my friends, and my house, amongst other things, including work. All these things I want and need to spend my time on at the weekends. So it’s not always so easy to prioritise the MFC above the other needs. I also love golf, but can rarely prioritise the time to play. Therefore I can understand the outside pressures that prevent members attending regularly. So no need to shame those of us who cannot spare/prioritise anywhere from 4-6 hours to go to the football every other week. It’s not that we are lazy or we don’t care. Far from it. I also know that a great many of you have these same competing elements and yet are still able to attend regularly. Perhaps you can tell me how you manage it. 6 2 Quote

That was when both sides were pressing for finals. It was the game, IIRC, where we mocked St Kilda about us making finals instead of them. Then the following week we blew valuable percentage against Brisbane when led by 32 points 5 minutes into the last quarter, then conceded a stack of goals and only won by 13. And then lost to Collingwood, thereby missing finals by the smallest percentage ever recorded. Having mocked St Kilda about making finals three weeks prior. Sigh. Those were the days. I recall that the MFC may have given free tickets away to international students that day, or some other like promotion. That game was also the only time we've beaten St Kilda at the MCG during the 2007 - 2021 period. We have a remarkably bad record against St Kilda at the MCG. 1 Quote

PartyTimeJohnny 537 Posted May 5, 2022 Posted May 5, 2022 In this thread people often reply with their own particular circumstances and story about why they don't attend. That's fine. However, I don't think anyone can firmly dispute that the Melbourne fanbase aren't showing up on big numbers and it's fair to assume that a premiership side would be getting better numbers than they are. If we're being honest it's a bit embarrassing. However, we're the premiers, aflw runners up, we have a record membership and incredible team so life's pretty good. 5 Quote

I live in Canberra and have a 2 yr old. I have been to the Dogs and the Tigers games and I will be at the Lions Thursday night game. I make the effort and pay the money because I can afford it (off alcohol to compensate) and I know how quickly this all could go away. One injury, a resigning that doesn’t happen, some bad luck and we blink and miss the moments we want to savour for years to come. I know many have great reasons why they are unable to get to these games, but this is a unique situation with a generational team that is not attracting generational crowds. Its disappointing and we shouldn’t ignore it. 4 Quote
xarronn 384 Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Not sure at this time what the attendance at the Bombers v Hawks game is tonight, but seems a bit sparse considering the membership bases of these clubs. Quote
whatwhat say what 23,880 Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 under 65k today at the g; where's the outrage from the media about the filth and the scum not turning up? 33k for peptides' big win crowds are way down i still think it'll be about 30k tomorrow; crazy that i've been at games v st kilda where we had over 50k in attendance but they'd been completely banished from my mind...primarily cos of the disaster against the filth to cost us a spot in the finals... 1 Quote
BDA 23,048 Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 I went to 2 corporate events last week. Attendance down at both. Many people now prefer to attend online rather than physically attend. I think it’s the same as footy where people have gotten used to watching on Kayo and now prefer to watch from the comfort of their home rather than go to the game. I think this is a post Covid reality and needs to be factored in to expectations of crowd sizes 4 Quote

Cassiew 1,903 Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Much as I’d like to, I can’t afford to go to every game. It’s not just transport, inconvenient times, getting home late, idiotic fans, it’s also costs money for drinks and food. Being single, it also depends on whether my family can go and they’ve got their own families too. I guess if I end up dating a demons supporter it might change *sigh* 4 Quote

Bring-Back-Powell 15,562 Posted May 8, 2022 Posted May 8, 2022 35K is a good crowd considering it’s the average attendance since 2000 between the 2 sides at the MCG, and then you factor Mothers Day. 7 Quote

old dee 24,084 Posted May 8, 2022 Posted May 8, 2022 My daughter and wife decided to have a brunch get together so I could go to the footy. We had a nice time and I left to go to the footy a little later than I would normally. Arrived at Sunbury line to discover no trains. So decided to drive to the Broady line even if I arrived after the start of the game. Mother's Day traffic was heavy. Arrived at Glenbervie to see the train leave the station. Next train in 20 minutes. By my calculations that would have got me to game well into the second quarter. At this point I admitted defeat and return home. Family was there so we continued mother's Day. Why does the MFC always seem to get these games on mother's Day? Oh well replay tonight will have to do. 2 1 Quote
