Fritsch is one of the hardest players in the comp to rank. Personally I’d go with a number of gun midfielders, talls, two way small forwards and elite defenders before I’d get to Fritter.  But he's done his ratings based on the body of work from the past 12 - 18 months. Not who's the most talented in the AFL.

If he was going off talent alone then buddy Franklin would be sitting top 10 comfortably.

I think you're also underselling Fritsch. Anyone that kicks 6 goals in a grand final off the back of a 60 goal year performance is a top 20 player of thr competition in my eyes.

    Agreed. Fritsch has had an excellent output in both ‘20 and ‘21 he has done it quietly 

    DeGoey is rated in this list because he plays the odd good quarter and plays for the Filth

    I get that Fritsch can go missing in games and that almost a quarter of his goals came in 2 games. However it's stiff to overlook a player that kicked the second most goals in the league last year and kicked an incredible 6 in the biggest game of the year.

    The phrase he's used multiple times is 'most valuable players heading into season 2022'. He says he's assessed recent form but the decision making is based on who he thinks will be the best this year.

    So if I was lining up all the players in the comp and picking them purely for this year I'd have the following forwards (excluding the flanker/midfielder types) ahead of Fritsch:

    - Naughton, Greene, Hawkins, McKay, Charlie Cameron I'd say are 5 locks, any argument there?
    - Then I'd add Max King, Papley, Daniher and Ben Brown as 4 more I'd go with for season 2022. Did they have better seasons than Fritsch last year - no, but overall I'd say they are just better and likely to do so this year. So Fritsch is down to 10th at best.
    - Plus I'd certainly consider a number of others like Franklin, a healthy Jeremy Cameron, Breust and Kosi Pickett. 

    Add in 10 defenders, 20 midfielders of various roles and a few rucks and suddenly that's 40 ahead of Fritsch.

    Goal kicking big midfielders who can go forward are the most valuable players in the comp. We've seen that with Fyfe, Danger, Dusty, Bont, Petracca really having a stranglehold over the comps best player status for probably a decade now. I totally understand the argument that guys like Heeney and De Goey haven't paid their dues to be thought of in that company, but the same was true of Petracca prior to 2020. 'Kmart Dusty' might be a joke but if you are the budget version of the games most dominant player then you'll be in the top 50 and climbing. If he doesn't do it this year I'll give up on him. But out of contract, on his last chance at Coll, new coach and a commitment to play him on ball, if his body holds up I think he'll comfortably be top 50.

    Who cares? It cups and games won that matter, not some arbitrary rankings?

    We have 23 players who were the best of season 2021 and all are back for season 2022.

    I'm also the Melbourne coaches who decided he was our 11th best player and behind 3 other forwards. 

    He played an old school undersized full forward role and did it very well, and had a blinder in the grand final. But if I had to pick 3 Melbourne forwards for this year I'd go Brown, Pickett and then have a tough choice between ANB and Fritsch.

    Too true. It wasn't all that long ago we would be celebrating if Nathan Jones managed to sneak into a Mike Sheahan / Mark Robinson Top 50.

    ANB doesn’t play a key forward role, so not a comparison for me

    The top 50 is not just limited to one role.

    It was one game. Jayden Short was the runner up for the Norm in 2020, he didn’t become the games best back flanker.

    A fully fit Ben Brown and Pickett with more consistency and hopefully kicking 40+ goals again are better footballers.

    De Goey had a great 2018 and hasn't done a lot since (kind of like the Pies)

    Good point Jnr yes they are small change that all add up to our excellence but the jewel in the Crown is that big beautiful Cup and always should be.

    On a wider lens, there is no way in hell seagulls like Merrett and McCrae (and even Walsh if I'm being harsh) are better than Tomahawk and Toby Greene. 

    Walsh is going to be a star, will be on of the best mids in the comp in a couple of years if he doesn't get Carltoned (so good to write that about another side haha)

    Let all these clowns continue to under-rate us. The only evaluation we should be interested in is the Grand Final, and at the moment no club has the side to challenge us. All the rest of the noise (including this) is irrelevant. In fact the more we can sneak under the radar the better. But this will be very hard once the season proper begins.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors.
