Never really one to run with sources but I've heard from one who claims to have heard that LJ is flip flopping all over the place on this. Like a bit of a scatter-brain Jane.

Great to hear!

Fri night has to make him think twice. In terms of showing the gap between us and Freo.

Don't look into it too much 1964_2 but it would make sense if it was the case. He's 20 and probably a young 20 to be fair, massive decision for anyone to make let alone a kid.

I have no sources, but this kind of supports my thinking on this whole situation (and the vibe I have picked up on based on zero evidence) You would think if this was the case though his manager would advise him to stay another two years and be mentored by the best ruck in the comp and possibly win another flag and then cash in on the big bucks.

In times like this you do wonder if the player is getting the best possible representation from their manager. The career is short and all that he they want to get their client the best deal but you have to think of the mental effect on a young kid as well.

Now that Gus has signed, does anyone know the most money we can give Jackson ?

What do you think?

Most of the rest.

Wish I could Alex. Would need at least a ball park figure of every players' contract and then there's how all contracts are structured.

Fair to say it's considerably less than what Freo can offer, especially if they offload Lobb.

Honestly what else is Max going to say when asked about Jackson and his contract?

Honestly…he didn’t have to say anything!!

But the big bucks (and long contract) are already (allegedly) being offered. Things could go wrong in those two years. There’s no way his manager would give him the advice you suggest.

I love Max. He handles this stuff so well, and is very good at reminding everyone that these are young people we are talking about - and not just operational assets.

i'm flip flopping too.

As much as I want to keep him, I would rather let him go and trust our list management to use the collateral wisely to ensure we are in the premiership window for a few more years given we have locked up our stars.

I think there would have been more damage to the culture of the club, and our chances or multiple premierships,  if we lost Gus to keep LJ. I sort of feel the same way about the likes of Harmes and anyone else we feel is important to the soul of the club or the future who could be colateral damage to his contract.

If he wants to stay, and will accept what we can offer for 2 years, then great. I don't think we can afford to blow up our list to keep him by trying to match the dockers. Lets be a Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond - not a 1 off wonder like Pies, Dogs, WCE etc.

Tom Papley picked Carlton, last I looked he is still in Sydney at the Swans!

Papley still had 3 years to run on a contract, so that’s a very different  argument

Yeah but it’s clubs that release them from their contracts.

AS far as I’m concerned he says he wants to be closer to family and the Eagles can also make that possible. They have a better draft hand so id put that to Peter Bell  and say come to us with something palatable or don’t waste our time.

Worst case is LJ signs with us for another 2. He still won’t become a RFA or FA at the end of that, so we can happily do the same again.

He is out of contract, so they have nothing to hold him to.  Players pick the club they want to be traded to and 99/100 it gets done.  Just because WC has a better draft hand, doesn’t mean LJ is happy to go there.  You are living in fantasy land if you think this is how it works

I like how ‘he will stay’ or ‘he will go’ ebbs and flows dependent a lot on what the latest comments or opinions are made by the media.

Just for the hell of it I’ll throw in one totally unsubstantiated or fact backed opinion, in fact it is more of a dream.

He takes on another two more years with us and we snag another two and look like we can get a couple more.  In the meantime Freo’s window looks like it’s closing a bit and Jacko has had 2 more years to mature and consider his future.

I would like to think he just might want to continue the journey with us.

Just dreaming, that’s all.  GO DEES

Maybe he reads demonland and will base his decision on the responses in this thread.

A poster said we are heavily into Grundy and may even have a deal in place.

I wouldn't think that would be true, if we retain Jacko.

This is a sensible view Earl, but in my humble opinion Dogga was a key (if not the key) point of difference between us winning the flag and not. That 3rd quarter. It's one thing to be in a premiership window, but it's another to get over the line in that final game. I'm torn between having a Geelong length run in finals but going nowhere vs Brisbane three-peat then falling off the cliff. I think I'd rather take the Brisbane scenario, and for that I reckon we need to keep Jackson.

Yep, wise words Spalding. Can't be breaking the bank to keep him.

Its a very curious thing for Max to go with, could easily have just said the old we "will resepct his decision.... "

I wonder if that is to calm the masses and the media.

Between this, and the other messages from the club in the last week, I think we've got a clear strategy on how to manage this. Radical empathy.

We're not going to pressure the kid. It's his decision and we'll put a case forward at negotiations, but more importantly he is part of the team and enjoys being here. If he leaves that next year fine, but while he is here enjoy it.

This demonstration of cultural excellence and empathy, is a big counter offer in itself when the other club and media are heaping pressure on you.

The thing with Gus could have been years more than money. The club may have wanted to offer 4, Gus may have wanted 7 and they finally settled on 6. $$$ would have been part of it, but there are many other factors.

Also with a contract that long, they may have backloaded to allow a 2 year contract extension for LJ in case he wants to stay.

Where there is a will there is a way.
