Many years ago me and a couple members here joined forces to produce a Robert Flower highlights dvd.

I'm very pleased to say that my collection of Robbie Flower highlights has grown and as tribute to the Dees making (and hopefully winning) the 2021 GF, I have uploaded a highlights video to Youtube of the greatest Melbourne player in my life time. So if you have a spare 40 mins or so, have a look at it.

If you are too young to have seen him play, you need to see this. If you are old enough to have seen him play and remember what he was like, please enjoy.

Thanks Ash. Watched a bit and will finish later. Fantastic memories of our most skillful player ever. Never forgotten.

Could still get a game today. Not a problem.

Never awarded a Brownlow, what an absolute joke.
You will be watching on Saturday Robbie

Who the [censored] was wearing number 2 for Victoria when Robbie F was representing  the big V?

At least he was wearing 9. Neitz and Alan Johnsons number.

Magnificent!! Ash, I put together a similar package many years ago ( of which quite a few are included here) which has done the rounds, but some of these rarer highlights from earlier on are fantastic. Can I endorse and suggest all Demonlanders who haven't seen him play... Strap yourselves in... These highlights are wonderful

Unfortunately he never tasted the success that the 2021 players now enjoy he even missed the night grand final victory in 1987, spoke to him in 1988 on the eve of the season and I suggested he make a comeback for one last go at the premiership and replied he was done.

I have MFC football which he gave me on the eve of the Preliminary final signed by all the players, I was a trainer at the MFC till 1986 and I was thrilled he got to taste some finals success but we fell at the 2nd last hurdle and probably would not have played in grand final even if we made it.

To me Robbie Flower was the man who had red and blue running through his veins.  Unlike many of our great players, Robbie had been a demon fan all his life. This was the only club he loved and the only one he ever wanted to play with. After his retirement, he pretty much kept out of public spotlight, until the merger talk started. I was just so proud he was one of the rare demon sons that was vocal in his opposition of it. I wouldn’t have expected any less from him. Me and my older brother used to have Greg Well’s number (11). But in 1981, we switched to 2, Robbie Flower’s number. We made sure our younger brother was always number 2. Especially as he got our old hand-me-downs.

My dad lived through Barassi and all the great years and he still says Robbie Flower was the best Demon he ever saw. I was lucky to get his autograph several times. I was devastated when he died.

Healy was a gun player before he left.
we had some great players in the 70’s and 80’s but they didn’t work hard enough as a TEAM.

This years results show it exactly

He was never as good as Flower. The fact that Flower only won one best and fairest (1977.) Especially when you see some questionable players who won it over him

Well aware of all the greatness of R Flower

For some reason The Umpires never voted him high enough

We will never know.
But one of the main reasons i take little notice of The Brownlow.
I mean let’s be honest, KB was another who was crucified on Brownlow night

Brownlow is one thing. But we as a club only gave him one best and fairest. Look at the players who won over Flower, Steven Smith, Steven Icke, etc

A reminder of his sublime instinctive skills. He was so natural and so good on both sides. Both feet and both hands. If you didn’t know, you would be hard pressed to determine his natural side. There were no weaknesses.  Pure football genius.

B&F’s are Coaches awards. You need to ask them

Umpires are supposed to be unbiased

Thanks Ash. I grew up watching the Dees, and Robbie was often the only reason to remember anything from the games. I had forgotten that he had played briefly in the same team as Lyon, Stynes and Viney. I am also still staggered how he went to centre half-forward in a state game as captain of Victoria and thrashed Ross Glendinning, who was no mug at all, and about twice Robbie's size. The marks, the long runs, and those left-handed bounces ... perhaps the only player from that era who could walk into the 2021 team and pick just about any spot. Wouldn't be a sight to see Robbie, Trac and Clarry all in the same team?

Poetry in motion

Thanks Ash, I got one of the original dvd copies from Mark and I'd love to have this one as well, is there any way I could download this on to a thumb drive>

Still makes me sad that Robbie Flower wasn't alive to see the Demons break their 57 year Premiership drought. He would of been overjoyed with happiness!

Let's hope the 2021 AFL Premiership cup pays a special visit to the Flower family over the next few weeks. I think it would be very significant for the Melbourne Football Club to do this.

Lastly, I still hope that the MCC considers putting up a statue of Robbie Flower at the MCG. I think it would be very important for this to happen.

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
