Neale, Tom Mitchell and now Wines are all very good players but I’d argue that there are others who have a lot more of an impact on games than these players.

Strange that Langdon or ANB didn’t poll, and Salem only in one game - confirms that if you are not a mid-fielder don’t bother, the award doesn’t apply to you.

Pardon me for not reading the whole thread and risking repetition. First Congratulations to Ollie Wines he had a terrific year and to the others over the 30 mark.

Ok down to business, the brownlow doesn't celebrate the best in the game, just the best in the midfield. I get they tend to be ball accumulators and often are players who turn games but that is not the whole story of the game. For example why should Tmac get more votes than Lever or May? I am glad Tmac was recognised but backmen get no recognition beyond all Australian. 

It really needs to be addressed, at least forwards have the Coleman which is a pretty objective award, why isn't the coleman medal awarded on Brownlow night?

You are right.  This morning I read through all of the votes and the lack of representation by defenders is simply wrong. We know, perhaps better than most fans, that defenders can win games.  There is too much emphasis on possession numbers and none on defensive acts.

I don’t rate bont all that much for where he finished in the poll last night. 
His second half of the year was ordinary 

I remember watching the gcs vs dogs game and Touk Miller absolutely killed it and he got no votes and Bont got 3 votes. I couldn’t believe it. The love child saying of the bont was 100% confirmed last night. I’m glad Wines won

The voting is stuffed, but we already knew that. Walsh is a good young player, but the fact he equaled peak Judd in votes last night shows how out of whack it is. Same for that many players over 20 votes. There’s no way that many players are best on ground in that many matches. Not even close.

Salem had 1 vote the halfway point. He was sitting top 10 in the coaches votes at that stage. Coaches rated him top 10 in the league, umpires didn’t rate him in the top 50+. 

There needs to be an award for defenders. Brownlow is for midfielders. Coleman is for forwards. Need a defenders award too. I would take the impact of May or Lever over most of the top 20 in the Brownlow last night! Teams literally plan their match around those two, such is their influence!

The Brownlow is not the best player anymore. Who do you trust, the umpires or the coaches? Answer is obvious. Let’s hope the umpires don’t hand the Dogs the flash this weekend!

I enjoyed Wines’ speech at least. Some class in there and thought he was genuinely happy to win it. Good on him even though some of the votes were head scratchers throughout the evening. Liked the bit where he congratulated both Grand Finalists and urged the audience to applaud.

He's a classy guy and it's not hard to see why Port Adelaide viewed him as captaincy material. very happy Wines got the job done, 

In a broader sense i couldn't help but feel almost a sense of irrelevance to the award, it seems in general there has been a shift to the Coaches association award being the big individual prize, and i also think the Norm Smith, doing it on the biggest stage are just about the two most prestigious awards these days. 

I'd like to see the coaches award and the brownlow in the opposite way, the brownlow votes revealed post match and a big night celebrating the coaches votes at the end of season.

It was interesting opposition players not really rating or wanting to rate Clarry.

I thought Ben Cunnington getting BOG in a 5 goal losing side was a surprise, but we didn't play great in the first half of that game and it was really the 3rd quarter that put that game away. Other results were fair enough with the exception of the Adelaide game at the MCG which was just bizarre - the best 2 players on the ground in a 7 goal losing side? Spare me. But 16 of 22 BOG performances to a dees player is terrific.

Cunnington getting the votes was actually one the umpires got right, we had no answer for him.

The biggest surprise was O’Meara getting votes in a game where were won by over 50 points.

Reminds of the soccer chant "he's here, he's there, he's every bl00dywhere" 

If I take the Brownlow as an umpires award, I can accept it. They have a unique and (mostly) unbiased view of the game, and can only notice what is around them. Even with this in mind I look at players like Gawn, Mundy, McCrae and Miller and wonder how they could score so mildly when Oliver, Bont Wines etc... can rack up BOG's. Sometimes after attending a game live, I am gob smacked to find out on the way home that a certain player had so much of the ball. 

Thinking about defenders, the Brownlow seems to award those who MAKE the game, not those who thwart or STOP it, however meaningful the defenders role is. Backmen like Hardeman, Wanganeen, Hardy, and Glendinning all had a definite play-making ability that saw them make the play, so maybe that is what the umpires notice.
