The Weid has been unlucky to get injured when he did because TMac has come in and done a tremendous job in his place.

The season is long. He’ll get his chance but longer term I can’t see him and TMac in the same team. I don’t see TMac in the wing role so, unless BB doesn’t work out (i reckon he will), they are fighting for the same spot.

Despite being bigger, I see no reason why Weid can’t replace Melksham.

Of the Vic teams Cats and Rich would be interested to replace Hawkins and Riewoldt resepectively, Ess, Pies and Hawks to fill a current void and North because they chase everyone.

I think he will stay.

How so? Other than neither applies all that much pressure I can’t see any similarities in their respective game style or skillset. Can the Weid ping a 40m pass onto the chest of a leading forward?

At the moment Weideman is a player who had one scoring shot in his last four AFL games last season, and who is stuck in the VFL this season because he was injured (yet again) in the pre season. 

Sam and his manager might believe he is worthy of more opportunities and a big fat contract, but the reality is that he is yet to make a compelling case for either. The standard of the VFL has dropped significantly, and players are going to need to do more than kick a few goals in a dominant side against poor opposition to get promoted.

There is no doubt that Sam's best football is very good, but we see it very rarely. All too often we get the lite version of him, who is not strong enough in marking contests, doesn't demand the football and won't give consistent second efforts.

If we can keep Weideman on a two year contract on moderate money, that's great, but I certainly wouldn't be throwing the farm at him.

If his name wasnt Weideman i dont think we'd be having this conversation. He hasnt taken advantage of his earlier opportunities.

He will get a run soon. Maybe against Carlton.

If he bombs and wants to go to his spiritual home Collingwood, then swap him for a pick.He can hang out with DeGoey .That should be a bag of laughs.

BB and Tmac aren't young, so its extremely important to keep Sam for the long term in my view. And I reckon the club will find a way to make that happen.

I reckon Nth and Collingwood would definitely be two of the four clubs, thinking Geelong and Gold Coast could be the other two.

He's out of contract and Nth and Collingwood are not going to rise too much further up the ladder this season.

I'm as scared about him walking to the pies through the PSD on a big salary as anything here. People should not kid themselves that it might not happen, they have the space, and I suspect that they will offload a few more poorly thought out contracts (De Goey, Sidebotton) and this might be Pendles last year as well. Aiden Corr and Jack martin both went through via the PSD I think, and Collingwood have stuff all to 'trade' with picks or players.

As much as Goodwin is trying to say he's not going anywhere, the media will whip this up as a frenzy until he gets into the team. Great to see TMac for playing well at the moment, but he wouldn't have even been in the side at the start of the year if Brown and Weid were not injured.  Why else did the club look to recruit Majak Daw as coverage?  I suspect they were pretty nervous about TMac holding up the forward line. But we managed very well without BBB and Weid.

Gut feel here is.... which of the 3 tall forwards in TMac, BBB and Weid have consistently shown that they are capable of kicking large bags of goals in a match. To me BBB and the Weid have shown themselves as being more likely to do that.

TMac's strength and value at the moment is that he is very good structurally for us up forward, but at best he's good for maybe 3 goals. I don't think that value is there with him on a wing... especially when we will favor run off Langdon ad Hunts side of the ground where possible.

No doubt he will be moving on if we don't see him secure his spot over the next 5-6 weeks.  TMac and Jackson are playing well enough to keep a spot, B Brown will have a few weeks to find form.

That they have salary space?  They would have freed up a lot with the debacle of last year (even though they still are copping A big chunk of Treloar's salary) Pretty sure that they will be free of Beams contract payments at the end of this year too, and I can't see how they will not offload at least one more of Sidebottom, Pendles or DeGoey this year, not to mention a few players like Cox, Mayne, Greenwood & Hoskin Elliot. 

Weid won't be a huge salary, but they are better placed to throw 500-600k or whatever it might take to keep him than we are with our recent signings.  

If we can sell Weideman on premierships and success then Nth and Collingwood won't have a shot, but if he chases games and money then we are not as strongly placed.

The problem is that Ben Brown and Tmac are old so offer nothing long term and Jackson is a ruckman so Weideman is the only young forward of that lot. must keep him

He'll be offered 4-5 years elsewhere and I don't know whether we'd go there - it's going to be interesting.  I'm confident he'll carve out a successful AFL career, he'd make a good KPB if he doesn't make it forward - but whether or not that's a MFC remains to be seen.  I really hope we can retain him - he's dynasty material along with Petty.

They're not old, they're 28 this year and it's reasonable they'll both still play when they are 31 - that's another 3 seasons beyond this.

Kennedy 33, Riewoldt 32, Hawkins 32, Dixon 30 - all still playing well in contending teams.

I suspect TMac will be the most vulnerable based on BBB having a 4 year contract, and Weid and Jackson being the future of the club.

Or we have to be prepared to trial having the three of them playing tall, and sacrificing the Gawn/Jackson experiment which isn't going to happen either, unless we think Jackson could cover Viney's absence ?

Given the way TMac is playing, could Carlton see him as an upgrade in their forward line?  it would extend his career further than might be possible with the Dees. He's definitely a better player than Casboult and McGovern, and would provide McKay the support he is sadly lacking at the moment.
