Wow..

Out if all players you'd think would think the club be chasing Gunston hard it would be us..

Massive disappointment once again that we didn't throw our hat in the ring for a player that fits a significant need for us.

This whole putting our eggs in the Grundy basket isn't that impressive one bit.

You don’t know that we didn’t try. He said he only wanted to go to Brisbane, or stay at Hawthorn. Not much we can do about that.

Just because we missed out on one player also doesn’t mean we are putting all our eggs in one basket.

Quit throwing the toys out of the cot. Long way to go - in fact trade week hasn’t even started yet.

Cool story bro.

No where am I throwing 'toys out of cot' just stating my disappointment that we missed out on a player that fits a more significant fit then what Grundy does.

Simple really.

I like Jack as well he would have been good short term but he will be 31 next month and is only 193cm. I am hoping for a bigger stronger forward to play in tandem with JVR, Fritsch and whoever else is still standing at the Dee’s.!!!

They might be able to get the McStay compo then work out a trade with Hawthorn. After the Hawks attempted fire sale last year they probably can’t stand in the way of Gunston going and at nearly 31 his own compo shouldn’t rate highly

That would make sense

Late to the party but isn’t Gunston a very similar player to Fritsch? He’s a very good player but I wouldn’t think a Gunston type is at the top of our needs list.

I could never envisage Gunston playing in our forwardline alongside Max Gawn, Ben Brown and Fritsch. And I thought it was strange that many supporters were into him.

He's another player who requires great ball use to bring his best. He is not a contested marking beast. He's not KPP. He's a lead up forward with elite finishing skills and class.

GNF's rumour aside I'd be highly surprised if we were ever actually into him..

Gunston couldn’t dream of having the talent of Fritsch.

Surely you jest. Gunston has had a great career. Love fritta but I'd have them at least on par

Undecided on whether I wanted him or not. I imagine he would have come reasonably cheap and I thought he played some reasonable footy this year higher up the ground. Would help with our kicks into 50.

Just hope we haven't missed a good calculated risk opportunity.

Ummm. Gunston has over 400 goals at about 2 goals per game and his career stats are mostly listed as elite.

Ummm. We need more genuine Goalkickers.  We are in the premiership window.  He’s 31 but is exactly what we need. He has kicked goals from limited opportunities over the last few years when fit.

Strange that he left Crows as he wanted to get back to home in Melbourne.  Sure he’s 31 but wouldn’t an offer from Dees mean he stays here in Melbourne and would likely fit straight in.

Don’t want him to go to a premiership contender like the Lions.

Don't think this is a miss at all and there's nothing we could do if he clearly announced that it was either Hawthorn or Brisbane.

I feel as though we have bigger irons in the fire (literally).

Lol on current form?

Nah.

Grundy has huge question marks on his body and will be 29 at the start of the year.

Doesn't even fit a significant need compared to what Gunston.

Gunston has had just as many injuries and I doubt we were ever in the picture for Gunston.  I’m sure it’s a lifestyle change for him

If Gunston was going to stay in Melbourne, he would have stayed with Hawthorn.

Jest? Hardly. Fritta is way more mercurial.

And Gunston is way more consistent at the contest and with defensive work rate. Fritsch has a lot of work to do to catch Gunston’s career

Would’ve liked Gunston. I think the combination of Gawn, Gunston, Fritsch and one pack smashing key forward (JVR/Brown/McDonald) could’ve worked pretty well.

But we’d be looking at 3 over 30’s forwards on the list plus Gawn.

As well as opening some space for JVR we save a nice wad of cash to go after a proper long term solution to the other key forward role. Just sounds like it won’t be next year.

Won’t our money next year to used to keep Kozzzy, keep paying Grundy and renew 2-3 year deal with May.

They’re some priorities but Brown and McDonald will only have 1 year left and might even be open to retiring if things don’t come good for them. Can get someone on a slightly backloaded deal knowing those 2 will both be either gone or on nothing in 2025

Simple really.

Are we going to do this every time another player goes to another club?

Are we upset about Dunkley, or De Goey, or McStay, or Rankine, or Lobb, or Logue, or Rioli, or Amon?

And do you know we didn't "throw our hat in the ring"?

And besides all of this, isn't Gunston going for a change up to his late-stage career having won three premierships and played in Victoria for 10 years, now he wants to try something new - so would he even have moved club just to say in Melbourne?

No..

Because none of those players really fit a required need lol..

Amon maybe but his price tag was way too much.

C'mon mate.. he's going up to a club right on a premiership window. There's absolutely no other way to disguise this. Great lifestyle as well yoy can add.

Brisbane adding Gunston, Dunkley who's just won a BnF and entering his prime, along with Ashcroft as put them right into premiership frame already.

We need a Breust more than we need a Gunston. And a Mitch Lewis more than both combined.

Dunkley's not Dangerfield and Gunstons not J. Cameron. Ashcroft might be a Daicos, but I still can't see those 3 players making up the gap vs a Geelong side. No tactical shift or positional upgrade can make up that difference imo.

Super player in his day but we need a pack marking KPF ala Aaron Naughton.

Never even said they were..

But  nah cool comparisons.

...So the point is they're not in the premiership frame, and never even were this year or last. 2020 is debatable but they were also roughed up by a bigger bodied Geelong in a similar prelim belting. Either way, them being in the premiership frame next year is debatable.

Brisbane making these moves is more akin to St Kilda topping up on trades because they think they're in the window, when fundamentally there are deeper issues with personnel, desire and gameplan that will never get them a premiership. Putting aside that they got us at our weakest in the semi final.

That's just my opinion anyway

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
