Going by the Brownlow the top 50 midfielders are the top 70 players in the league and include ruckmen and wingers?

Can’t we have both ?😌

Why not, we have no idea what our salary cap pressure is, if we can fit him in the cap with out risking losing key players you get him.  The best thing about our side is the age demographic, not to many players that will play on Saturday that won't play for another 4-5+ years.

Well if this morning's news on the AFL site is correct, we know Weideman won't be part of any trade for Cerra.

Still won't rule out the club being able to get it done though if he nominates us.

With Carlton announcing their coach now wonder if this now plays a huge part in Cerra’s decision.

I'm a big fan of this kid but I have never been confident of this happening.

I've always thought he would be holding off making his announcement until the new coach of Carlton has been named.  Going to a new club without a coach named just reeks of either a fat contract that's too good to be true or a player desperate to get out of his existing club foe certain reasons.

So its not something that Fremantle would want or he would want to be seen doing.  I'm sure they're both in agreeance here.

Now that Voss has been named, I'm just waiting for his confirmation to the press along the usual lines of "I've spoke with Vossy and I'm super excited with his plans for the Carlton Football Club and his vision for the future.  It's something I want to be a part of"

I've heard he's as good as ours from someone who would know (for whatever that's worth)

I have heard the same. But have no idea what we are planning to give up.

we're either going to be incredibly cheeky with picks to get 1-2 really good picks somehow, or we may have 1-2 players we think may be willing to go to Freo

You mean that person “knows” that he will nominate us. I am pretty certain no deal has been done with Freo yet.

I was told of two young players who may be involved in trades (neither are locks in our best 22, no-one from the 2019 draft trio)

Take it with a grain of salt however, just passing on the message

are we talking like James Jordan/Tom Sparrow type players?

Wouldn't we just give them a future first rounder and possibly a second rounder?

I sincerely hope not as I rate these 2.

But the reality is if Cerra does nominate us it's likely it will be those types....

Part of me then hopes Cerra doesn't nominate us as I do t want to see these guys leave unless they wanted to move anyway. Which there could be a chance for Sparrow being a SA boy.

I still think Tom resigning points to us getting Cerra

It was a very strange time to do an albeit excellent contract extension if they didn’t need early bargaining chips

Are these of the Chandler/Bedford/Baker variety?  I'd be loathe to see Jordon or Sparrow go. Jordon's been very good this year and Sparrow has gone up a gear in finals which is exactly what we want (c.f. Gary Rohan).

Unfortunately, to win flags you have to be ruthless.

If giving up Sparrow and Jordan for picks to help land Cerra is on then it's a no brainer.

Cerra would be unbelievable for us. He is a top 5 pick pick and I watched him multiple times live in his draft year. We're in our window now so ruthless decisions have to be made.

Not sure why anyone would be upset to lose Sparrow/Jordan if it meant we could get Cerra.

I wouldn't. I know both Sparrow and Jordon are rated extremely highly internally, but Cerra is better then them.

Every year you need to find ways to better your list.

Getting Cerra makes our list significantly better.

I wouldn’t like to lose Sparrow or JJ. Not sure either of them would be keen on a move either.
On the other hand if one of them is keen on a move and we can somehow land Cerra and keep a half decent draft pick this year then I’d back JT to pick up another similar player in this years draft. He seems to have an eye for inside mids.

Any chance we can get Freo to pay part of his salary going forward if he comes to us..? ;)

aka Treloar at Doggies..

He would already get less $ from Melbourne than Carlton.....Freo will definitely not be paying ANY part of his new wages lol.

I don't doubt Cerra is a talented player.

For me it's about role and team balance. Petracca has publically praised both Spaz and Jordan as allowing him to be a better player for the roles they play on the team.

Will be interesting to see where Cerra fits in the team if he does come.

For me it all depends on the price we need to pay Freo and how it affects the team. But I will say I trust out FD, if we are chasing Cerra there is a good reason for it.

Interesting times.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
