If there's no pre-finals bye, does that mean a Sunday final in week 1? Or three finals on the Saturday? If not, they'll have to do a Thursday night, but that won't work unless Bulldogs v Port is a repeat match up in the first final and they're both on a six-day break. Otherwise they'll be sending at least one, if not two, sides into that game off a five-day break.

From our perspective we'll have already had two consecutive six-day breaks so you'd hope we're on the Saturday in week 1, so that we don't have a third straight six-day break.

Certainly if there's no pre-finals bye, one of my concerns about resting players (missing every second week for five weeks potentially, through to the prelim) isn't a concern anymore.

Yes this would seem to be extra important now that the buy is likely to be scrapped

It’s only been a few years with the pre finals bye but it already feels rushed to jump straight into finals after the home and  away season is over. But whatever gives the afl the best chance of getting the finals done in good fashion will work for me.

Bulldogs vs Port on Friday night.

Cats vs Dees on Saturday night.

Any reason given?

Will the GF still be on the 25th of September?

That’s an interesting question. If pre-finals bye is scrapped then no it would be on the 18th unless things are looking good COVID-Wise (although how can you be sure where COVID is concerned) and they institute a pre-GF bye.

The Herald Sun understands Western Bulldogs-Port Adelaide will be the Friday night clash of Round 23.

But with no bye, clubs playing on the Sunday of Round 23 could have six-day breaks leading into the finals.

So Geelong-Melbourne shapes as a likely Saturday night clash given their ladder standing, with Brisbane-West Coast the other Saturday night clash at the Gabba.

Sydney could take on Gold Coast in an afternoon or twilight clash on Saturday, maximising the Swans’ chances of a seven-day break.

Hopes of a Darwin clash for Brisbane and West Coast in Round 23 are dwindling, and the Eagles would need a 14-day quarantine period if they returned from the Gabba after visiting Queensland.

So there is every likelihood they will play at the Gabba and then remain out of Perth for the early weeks of the finals if they keep winning.

Fremantle take on St Kilda in Round 23 in Melbourne and would also likely remain out of Perth if they qualified for finals.

While clubs can play off seven days of hotel quarantine in Perth, they need a full 14 days before they are allowed out into the community.

So the league could still use its bye week after the preliminary finals if it eventually shifted the last two weeks of the the finals to Perth.

Teams could play the preliminary finals in hotel quarantine and then spend another week in quarantine before being released on the weekend of the bye.

It would allow them into the community to enjoy Grand Final week without quarantine.

Cats vs Dees on Saturday night.

If the Dogs bounce back against the Power, then we finish top 2. If we beat the Cats, we are minor premiers! Also, with the other two top 4 teams playing Friday night we can rest however we like Saturday night if we are content with 2nd place.

if we hadn't drawn with hawks or if umps got it right vs crows first time for a draw at least......then it wouldn't matter if we lose to geelong (by not too much) we would finish on top by %

or if the afl agreed error in cats vs lions game was paid.....

umpiring howlers could cost us the minor premiership......gggrrrrrr!

Channel 7 are the big winners with 3 v 4 on Friday night and 1 v 2 on Saturday night with half the country in lockdown.

I'm waiting for the conspiracy theorists to claim that Covid, the AFL's draw released way back whenever (in late 2020, was it?) and the results of 189 separate AFL matches played throughout the year were all deliberately manufactured to generate this outcome.

A long bow by conspiracy theorists as almost no person in the media even had us in the 8 let alone sitting top @ round 22.

As an aside, anyone else regularly checking the ladder to see it is really true that we are on top:cool:  Such joy, with much promise to come.

Surely it's no more improbable than:

  • the moon landings were fake
  • Covid-19 is caused by 5G
  • Covid-19 vaccinations include tracking software

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
