I think the 20th team should be Southport. They already have the infrastructure.

The AFL definitely means business here.  Gill is pushing hard for this to happen.  It's just that the bar has been set very high.  I think it's been set unfairly high.

very good reason, it's in Bellerive on the bluff, there are houses everywhere around it and there is no parking facilities, to get it up to a scale that they want, would require a lot of construction work, and Tasmania has a higher population of NIMBYs than most places on earth.

Except no one who has a team wants them to relocated, and Tassie doesn't want a relocated team either, it's not going to do well for membership. 
I think Gil and the AFL Commission would be acutely aware of the success of the Tassie Jack Jumpers (note also they didn't get here without the Stadium either, admittedly it was bought from Glenorchy Council, and was subsequently redeveloped. But their membership I think is now capped, they didn't have a spare seat basically to any game this season, and they've made the GF and Semi finals in the first 2 seasons. With a team that people didn't think was up to it! They are now causing issues due to the fact that it's now being identified that we don't have enough courts in Tassie to keep up with the popularity of the sport at lower divisions, all in the space of 2 years.

I back that they put in the work to determine this model, and the stadium I personally think works too, the site is currently an industrial wasteland, it will be built and incorporated into a precinct that will have other facilities and amenities around it. Biggest concern is traffic congestion, all roads lead thru there basically. Fed Labor will come to the party, but for the precinct as a whole more than just the stadium.

That maybe so but it's been working fine for AFL games for over ten years and hosted other sports perfectly well

For sure, its the other parties I'd like to see pony up though. A lot of AFL and government money being proposed, others need to come to the party.

Just cede stadium land to the City of Geelong and the Victorian Government will pay for it.

yeah, it's worked fine with Nth and basically a bunch of teams that would run a loss if the game was in Melbourne....  
You see what happens with Collingwood playing the Hawks in Launceston for the practise match.... 
Bellerive won't handle marque teams playing here, and the ground is in a residential suburb! They objected to the lights and there are noise and light covenants that mean you can't have a game go past a certain time, and it cannot host concerts etc
This stadium is not just about AFL, it's just that the team would be an anchor tennant.

Merge Saints Hawks North ( all have voluntarily played down there) leaving 16 teams - better talent pool, no bloody byes and closer to an even schedule.

The AFL are idiots. Why would you pay Tas millions to build their team and join our comp?

Those grubs dont even want to pay for the entire stadium. It wont cost much to build a 35K down there.

Let Tasmania foot the bill. They stand to make millions out of footy tourism.

If they pay for the stadium then disband the Suns relocate as many players as possible and encourage a few AFL players to head down there.  Demons and Tas Devils is ok no big deal. Same as cats tigers lions or hawks magpies crows.

at least were at our prime and not needing to rebuild this time.

Tassie will enter in 2027/2028 and the draft concessions will continue until 2032 minimum

 

the dual introduction of two franchises in consecutive years and free agency artificially kept the cream at the top for longer in the early 2010s - it meant regeneration of talent through the draft was negated by the draft concessions while hawthorn in particular and geelong to a lesser extent were able to use free agency to stay at the top for longer

it will be interesting to see if a taswegian team and the likely mid-season trade period introduction around the same time has a similar effect

I get your point, just meant from a fan POV Monday/Thursday are difficult to attend at times but understand the media/ratings side of it. 

here's one way byes could be handled

first 19 rounds each team has a bye

assuming 23 rounds that leaves 4 more rounds with a bye

bottom 4 each have a bye over rounds 20 - 23

after round 23 the finalists each have a bye but the bottom 4 plays their round 23 game (i.e. 2 games)

so 24 weeks and every team has played 23 games

comments?

p.s. or alternatively week 24 the bottom 4 teams play their round 23 concurrently with the first week of the finals.

Unless they are able to get on the same page, I can't see the tassie team working for a while yet.

I reckon the most viable solution is for Golf Coast to relocate to Tassie and to play home games between both stadiums with an investment focus on elite training facilities for AFL, AFLW, State and Junior competition's in both the North and South. Tasmanian's love their grassroot sports and a focus on integrating facilities from elite Juniors through to the National competition would be the most sustainable path.
