TEAMS: Rd 19 vs Western Bulldogs

I will say we are certainly backing in the same group again. There’s an element of responsibility about this approach that I really like. Our best is good enough. We just need to bring that intensity and desire consistently.

Ive been a vocal critic of Goodwin over the last few years, but I think he’s showing a teachable restraint with this group of players that hopefully really allows the playing groups to understand it’s up to them.

I’m happy with our team but Viney needs to play a blinder.

What are you talking about. Jack needs to do his job, not play a blinder. His job is more than enough. I am over the Jack slaps. He is a gun, tough as nails, and is as much a Demon as you and I.

Treat him with respect.

Completely agree. Easy to go for the reactive, drop players approach. This is the team that has gotten us here, it'll be the team that takes us forward. Shows faith, the boys will respond and repay.

I love Jack Viney at his best. IMO, he hasn’t built back to his best form yet and looks to lack a bit of pace. If you look at his stats on AFL, he is above average/elite in tackling and pressure acts, but average to below average in most other stats areas. His season average possessions are 20 (10 kicks) and 5 of these are turnovers;  60% disposal eff overall (a further 3 possessions not effective).  Not intended as a slap, as you say he bleeds red and blue like us, but we really need him to build for finals.

Maybe I notice him more because I hold him to a higher standard.

Bulldogs != Lions

Again - Bevo probably knows what he’s doing

bit of hubris about

Maybe or maybe not.

compare the pair:-  1 coach is undefeated against the top 8, the other coach has lost to most of the major contenders (Melb, Geel, Syd, Rich)

Dunkley is looking like a big out. Can see their overly tall team back-firing.

Whilst I agree yes, he was our number 1 player for pressure acts last week.

Coaches love that [censored].

That [censored] is one of the foundations of the gameplan.

Coaches love that winning.

Whilst it's good to see Harmes back I honestly think Vandenberg is stiff. I thought his courageous act might have kept him but obviously not.

I would have easily dropped Brayshaw for Harmes and kept Vanders at half forward where Brayshaw has been shifted too.

Gus has honestly given us nothing for the past month and has had 0 influence on the team. Seriously needs to pull his finger out this weekend because he's getting a free run at it with some of his insipid efforts the past few weeks.

The shifting around of Brayshaw is becoming one of the more perplexing scenarios going around.

Brayshaw back to defensive wing, Jordon back to primarily midfielder. Viney starting defensive half-forward flank, with occasional run in the middle.

This is what has consistently worked - be pretty disappointed if it doesn’t happen.

Harmes in the half-fwd flank, midfield rotations - depending if he has a tagging job.

Some of you people laughing at Bevo could have egg all over your faces. And that is not just with the result Sat night. He probably does not care if the tallish forward line works or not but is willing to try it. He will be looking at finals and the various out comes in playing us then. He wont be worried if they lose Sat night as they have easier draw and if they finish 3rd or 4th wont bother him either as it will be us or Geelong in the qualifyings. And that may even be over at mcgowanville.

How many finals have footscray won over the last five years?

Would love to know the footy department's thoughts on Gus. Do they genuinely not rate him highly so they stick him wherever on the basis he's simply better than the next best available player who is out of the side? Never understood taking him out of the midfield rotation.

It’s fascinating isn’t it.

I wonder in history if there has ever been another inside midfielder finishing ~ 3rd in a Brownlow at a young age, who then basically never plays the same position again?

He was a defensive liability in 2019. Never pushed back hard enough, so found himself out of favour. Has become selfless on the wing, so it could change, we may see him back in soon.

Bit bizarre isn't it? Defensively liability at one point turned into a defensive wingman. Maybe Goody is playing 4D chess and it's all the masterplan to unleash the insid mid Gus with a great defensive game circa 2025.

I doubt the Dogs will go with that many talls, but that seems irrelevant to me. What will matter is how we go in the midfield battle. In the second half last week the Hawks continually won the ball around the contest and moved it quickly before we could properly setup.

It will come down to pressure and ability to win or halve 50/50 contests. Pressure forces them to bomb / rush forward entrances, playing into our defensive zone. 50/50 wins will be key for both teams as they present a rare opportunity to attack with a degree of unpredictability.

If our pressure is on early I think we can win. If we give them a sniff they will be desperate to square the ledger before going into finals. This game is more important for them than us.

Go Dees!

I don’t think Gus was alone in 2019. The effort was poor defensively across the board, a big reason this year the buzz word has been about selflessness and players not chasing individual accolades. I’m still not sure where Gus’ best spot is, not just for him, but for the team. I worry about balance with Oliver and Trac and Gus. I’d love someone more dynamic in there. Like Shai Bolton.. ?

Trac not dynamic enough for ya? But yes agree with the sentiment. Although I do think Harmes as a pure tagger so does the dirty work, works out well. Unfortunately he’s way behind Viney in the pecking order.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
