The Demons skipper says training at the home ground of their VFL affiliate in Cranbourne East, which sits on the suburban fringe of Melbourne, is a factor in their brilliant form.

The Demons have mixed training in recent years on Gosch’s Paddock, which sits at the eastern end of Melbourne’s sporting precinct, with Casey Fields but are now training at the latter far more frequently.

“This ground might have something to do with it. Gosch’s Paddock is literally a postage stamp,” Gawn said.

“Being out on a bigger ground has certainly helped us to be able to defend and obviously make the MCG a bit of a fortress again. We have won a few in a row now.”

He also made the point that Collingwood trained on Gosch's paddock in 2010-2011 and played well in that timeframe. So at the same time he's not blaming Gosch's for poor past performances. I'm loving his maturity and accountability, whilst retaining his personality. Great call having him as captain.

The Saints whinged and moaned when they had to travel out to Seaford to train (where I live btw its fine) but our boys just get on with the job and make it a positive having to go to the outer east - well done

To be fair, Gawny lives in Blairgowrie, he's certainly going to appreciate a trip to Casey Fields over going to Gosch's Paddock.

Might explain why they have one flag in their history.

I have never understood all the complaints about Casey as our training ground.

If it improves the team which appears to be in some what true this year then go there until the new facility gets up.

Seems a no brainer to me.

Its windy out there but at least they can train in private, something they cant do at Goschs

I am informed that the playing surface is now excellent which is not the case at Goschs.

I have always felt there is a certain amount of snobbery about us being at "Casey"

haha I have definitely heard a few of our boys complain about training out at Casey. But mainly due to the commute every day. For guys like Ed Langdon who lives in the inner north it would take an hour a day to drive down. I personally hate sitting in a car for two odd hours a day (more with traffic) but many don't. Each to their own.

haven't heard much complaining really from our players, the Saints jacked up to the point where they abandoned the entire facility...

It sounds like it’s a consistency thing, being able to have routine with going to the same location and same facilities for 85% of the time allows the team to be more settled in their environment. I’ve never liked the split shift thing they’ve done in the past, but I think it’s been a necessary evil to ensure our roots are still firmly at the MCG.

In 2019 there were big drainage problems. I chatted with a local who was of the opinion they were never installed correctly.

I assume they have now been fixed.

Why firmly at the G? As you have seen we have spent three years getting exactly nowhere. We could have built something and be using it at another location..

That’s not my opinion of what we should be doing, it’s what the club has been doing and continues to push. I happen to agree that we have had multiple opportunities at looking elsewhere outside of the G precinct as a permanent base but the club is staying steadfast that roots should be around the MCG. 

I’m not entirely sure Casey would be where I’d want us to lay down permanent roots as our base but we could do a hell of a lot worse. Sounds like our captain likes it!

Agree 100% pates but as you say we are locked into the G come hell or high water.

And yet Seaford is 35 minutes by car (via Monash/EastLink) from Toorak/South Yarra/Richmond, where no doubt many of them live. Ironically it probably takes just as long now, for them to commute to Moorabbin via Punt Rd/Nepean Hwy! Good luck to them

Gawn now lives on the Mornington Peninsula I believe so it would be easier to get to than Gosch’s too.

 

We are 9-0 everyone is happy no one is complaining, but training on a ground the same size you play your home games on would help though.

If that's the case I'd suggest Ed chose the location of his castle poorly.
I do know a couple of blokes that travel back and forth from work for an hr each way and don't mind it.
They like to wind down after work they say.
But they're in the bush on country roads.
Not the rat race you're dealing with down there.

Whenever I've driven by them training at Gosch's I've always wondered about the amount of crap they're sucking in from the traffic. Clearly their new four quarter game is just down to fresh air...

Haha didn’t the Casey area (years ago) have a big issue with a nearby garbage dump letting off toxic fumes? But I do agree, being in suburbia would surely be better for the lungs than constant traffic.

1) Open an Incognito window in Chrome
2) Search for the title of the article in double quotes "Max Gawn credits Demons MCG fortress to outer-Melbourne training base"
3) Right click on the links and select open in new tab

It doesn't always work but sometimes it will. This is because the web server assumes this request is from Google directly, trying to index the site so it lets you thorough.

 

It's also worth setting up a browser VPN like SurfShark or Bullet and hopping around different countries when you do this - I think by default it will not work if it detects the request originates in Australia. Those are paid VPN's by the way but they are dirt cheap and worth it so Scummo, via his corporate and business masters, can't watch everything you do
