This is not really a question. Weideman will come in. We’ve waited all year for an opportunity to slot him in. 
Given Jackson is only 1-2 weeks away, he, Tmac and BB will all wanna play at their best. Someone will lose their position in two weeks. Not a bad thing really.

    Majak will be there, mark it. His journey is inspirational and his time will come during the season. Sam's time is now, he is cherry ripe and will seize the the chance to show his wares.

    I now wait with bated breath to see young Sam come into the team on a wet and slippery MCG, not have an impact and watch those here who have been screaming for his inclusion, tear him a new one.

    Majak for me. we need a ruckman who can play forward, not a forward who can play ruck. 

    priority has to be the midfield and clearance. 

    We're getting smashed in centre clearances with the best ruckman in the game. How is a part time ruckman in Majak going to change anything? Clearly its a structure  and spacing issue.

    Throw out a hypothetical here:

    Weid comes in this week and kicks 4 as second ruck/forward, with TMac and Brown kicking 3 each.

    Jacko has another week off and we get similarly positive performances from all three, do we drop one so Jack comes in or does Dogga have to come back via Casey?

    Assuming Weids gets a call up.

    Weids is ok below his knees and has been out at Casey (wet and windy), so could be used to challenging conditions. 

    The very least, his will bring the ball down in front of himself, giving the crumbers a go at it, or following up himself.

    Hoping he clunks his marks.

    Who do Carlton send, Weitering, Jones, maybe Omac?

    Wouldn't want him in the seconds, comes straight back in, after training load is right.

    Play him as a mid, rotations to forward area.

    The team balance is not all that important,  if they are playing well find a place for them all, reward performance. 

    We can restructure and vary the system. It will give us flexibility for our game plan. Keep the opposition guessing so they can't get a read on our blueprints. The coaches can keep innovating, and come the end of the home and away they will know our best match plans and match ups.

    I don’t really see Jackson as a real forward. Don’t get me wrong, he’s done a fantastic job with Brown and Weid out. He kicks the odd goal and has brought the ball to ground but his real damage is functioning as a mid around stoppages (and freeing Gawn in the early rounds).

    And am still not convinced we can play Brown, TMac, Fritsch and Weidemen in the forward line with or without Jackson in the side. 

    Could we replace his mid role with Sparrow, let TMac ruck in the forward half, and let Gawn handle the Center Bounces and back half stoppages?

    Given Jackson’s incredible versatility, I guess it depends on which of his roles we really need to replace to match up with the blues.  I don’t think we need his forward role.   The Sparrow option wouldn’t free up Gawn, but it would give us more options to rectify the centre clearance deficit.  
     

    Majak would be my second vote. Frees Gawn and avoids too many changes to our forward line.

    Haha I was meaning "Jacko" not Jack! Viney definitely comes in when fit. 

    I get what you're saying with LJ playing more as a mid but I feel like the balance of too many talls could affect our two-way running and the pressure we put on other teams. It's a good potential problem to have but a problem none the less.

    Happy for TMac to play with a bit more freedom around the ground in the Jackson role and then Weideman and Brown to play the key forward roles they trained for in pre-season.

    I just feel we can experiment a bit.

    The backline is strong, we are not relying on perfection from the mids or fwds. So, the balance can appear out of whack but it might come off brilliantly.

    Perhaps the buy in isn't there yet.

    I didn't know the weather forecast. I'm stuck in thailand till covid fears are finished with.

    Our talls did alright in the wet against the Swans.

    We have been good in the wet but talls are Risky if it's wet underfoot as against  just a shower or two.

    ideally full input should see a team effort and success.

    I'd consider that we have been there, before. Many times, with Sam. Faith says 'yes' for Sam. The head says innovation - so it's Majak for me (rucking strength, marking strength, mobile by nature, kicks well & reliably, good defensively, can play forward or back as well).

    I was pleasantly surprised when I saw him in the VFL game v North. He was very competitive in the ruck when Majak was off for the second half, and quite agile and mobile when the ball was on the ground (poor man's LJ!). Remember Max took about 6-7 years in the system (I know there were some significant injuries during that period) biding his time behind Jamar etc before he was ready to take the no1 ruck position. 

    I would at least rookie Bradtke for next year (if he's not contracted).

    Jackson is not really a key forward as such. More a floating half forward, albeit a tall one. And of course he is taking serious minutes in the ruck

    So Daw is really more a like for like replacement. And I reckon he would be a terrific option.

    But surely they will go with weed from a player management perspective. Now really a senior player who has worked super hard and by all accounts has handled being in the twos very maturely. Lots of comments from teamates about his team first approach.

    And Weed rucked a bit in 2019, both at Casey and in the seniors. And I thought he looked quite a natural ruck. Improved quite a bit through the year and improved his ruck craft.

    I thought it strange he didn't ruck st all last season (other than in the forward line). But that may well have been because of his hip issue that he apparently was struggling with.

    All that said a forward line of Brown, melksham, friiter and weed really worries me in terms of their collective lack of forward pressure.

    Sure weed can lay a hard tackle. But he barely laid any in the second half of last year. And when the ball hits the ground often ball watches and doesn't apply referred pressure. Both issues were evident in the Casey v roos game.

    He better bring the heat.

    Agree completely Binman! This is Weids' opportunity He need s to bring a high pressure game and compete in the air, on the ground and physically tackle anything that moves.

    If he doesn't then we don't need him and he should be traded. There is no position in this side that doesn't require these attributes

    Preuss isn’t  playing and we are not, thank the lord, playing in Cairns an hour after a transfer to Brisbane then a 2+ hour flight.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
