We now have the stars and a very even spread of very good team oriented players who are prepared to work their butts of to help the team in every way possible. Max what a star, Tmac, Salem, Clarry, Tracc ,Ed, Jake, Hibbo, Kozzie, Trent, Jack & Gus you ground them down then finished them off with such ease I just loved those 15 minutes of mayhem in the last. Go Dee’s. !!!!!!!

    Damn, we were beaten by Collingwood after sitting 5-0. Len Thompson slit us up. I always thought that was about 8th round. So we can win next weekend and go back into a time portal.

    Have you played footy before? If he is dropped this week, I reckon that will be that. He deserves to play his 300th on the biggest of stages and redeem himself - there is no ‘drop him and then bring him back a week later’ scenario here; that is just an immature way to select teams.

    So maybe we will do it...

    That may be but Melksham played his role again today and was part of our brutal last qtr.

    Langdon is incredible. Not sure I even knew what a decent wingman was until he came. 
     

    Jones is a problem. I love him, I hate our recent history of [censored] over captains, but he’s a class below what we’re trying to do, he’s off the pace, and I don’t think he deserves a spot. But he does deserve 300. Glad I’m not making that decision. 
     

    How we’ve gone from no forward line to an embarrassment of riches is brilliant!

    Put him on Cotchin, plays old and slow (relative to younger players) as well. At least Jone's rarely gets like Cotchin does all the time now.

    Agree Nasher. No way he gets the flick. Only player that can pass on both feet to players in better positions. He is doing his role and stays.

    We seem to be a lot tougher mentally this year aside from some of the special talent we have at our disposal.

    I think this group think they are ready and want to achieve greatness.

    I thought Melksham was average. He made really good use of it when he had it, but I felt he was lucky to get it, if that makes sense. He didn't appear to work really hard to get to those positions, he didn't win his own ball, etc.

    I didn't watch him purposely all game, so maybe he was working really hard and that's why he ended up in those spots, but I didn't see it.

    As good as Gawn who played one of the best of his career?

    I wouldn’t equate “played his role” to the compete dominance of Gawn, that’s the point.

    Got home late after having a celebratory burger in the CBD after the match....never thought we were in any danger of losing you could see the boys worked over Hawthorn who were ready to crack by the last qtr...Max what a titan I can’t remember a more dominant Melbourne player in my 40 years as a supporter

    He was ok today, but come on, Gawn was instrumental and played 4 sensational quarters against a good opponent. Gawn > Melksham today, tomorrow and twice on Sunday.

    I take your point, he was nowhere near Gawn but “complete dominance” is a bit rich.

    Yea sure he has heart. Symbolism..lost me there.

    On his current form I dont think he has been in the best 22 for a while.

    Is it important for the big 300. YES.

    Hawthorn's pressure was immense, they'd set themselves for a real crack today. It wasn't sustainable though with their young guys tiring by the last which is when we ran all over them. We had no run off half back, it was all static and when we did play on they were right up in our face. We wrestled back control over quarters 2 and 3 and blitzed them in the last.

    It's a lack of pressure that worries me. Our whole game is based around forward pressure. Having Kozzy, Spargo and ANB in there is super important.

    As an aside, I thought Toby Bedford was sensational in the VFL today and is ready to step up should we feel the need to rest one of the guys mentioned above.

    I thought Bedford was great too. He seems to love hurting people and tackled like a machine. 

    Our forward pressure was missing for the first half and I reckon he'd be awesome in the forward line with Pickett and Spargs.

    I'd love to see Ben Brown back in but Weid played the better game and would tackle more than BB.

    Jones has to play next week.

    I think Jordan is ready for a rest and I still think Melksham is a skier.

    Bit of an odd win in the end, being only 4 points up 5 minutes into the last quarter but winning by 50. But as @bing181 said, we started turning the game around from quarter time. We only lost one quarter, the first, and from then on we got better at most things. And we did it without 3-4 best 22 players.

    We are going to lose a game at some point this year through inaccurate goalkicking. It's inevitable IMO.

    Lever kept us together early. Petty struggled all day but Lever was just fantastic. He's taken his game to a really high level this year and although he's still prone to a dropped mark or clanger kick here or there, overall he is just integral to our improvement.

    Thought Rivers had a shocking first quarter but then rebounded back excellently. Hibberd also got back to 2018 form. I reckon at least part of the reason we brought him in for Jetta was to replace some of May's rebounding, as we'd otherwise have Petty and Jetta who are both pretty dour.

    TMac is showing us what is role is going to be when B Brown and Weideman are ready to come back. He'll push higher up the ground, give us an option that isn't Gawn when coming out of defensive 50, and be a general aerial threat for opposition mids. 

    Poor old Jones had a mare. He'll get his 300th next week but with the pressure of May, Fritsch, B Brown and Weideman all getting ready to return, spots are tight.

    Banking these early wins is just critical if we want to have a serious crack at it this year. We've still got the Dogs x 2, Richmond, Port in Adelaide, West Coast in Perth, Geelong in Geelong and Sydney. We're not going to win them all, but with these five wins we're allowing ourselves to have those bad games during the season and, hopefully, not completely fall apart.

    I watched the whole lot SL. I have to say I have canned milkshake a lot but he played well today. He made three passes to players out of the corner of his that were perfect and then bobbed up with three goals. A good effort.

    I am currently working through Casey v Box Hill at the moment on 7Plus.  Love this technology thing.  A lot to like at the moment, a lot to like.

    I have canned him Nasher  but he played well today, his kicking today was 100%. It’s delivery like that that wins tough games.

      Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

    • REPORT: St. Kilda

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
