doesn’t do it for me

I love them both.

It’s the best clash jumper we’ve had and I know plenty of opposition fans who like it. We also seem to have a great win ratio the past few years when we wear it!

Being younger than some of you lot, I don't have the terrible associations with the royal blue.

Don't get me wrong, it's navy all the way if you'd ask me to pick, but I love that we have a great clash alternative that is both historically meaningful and looks fricken awesome.

Can't hurt that I love disco vibes as well.

My old man hated the royal blue - guilt by association.

I think as @Colin B. Flaubert spoke about  -it's been the guernsey/jersey/alderney of choice in some recent 'meaningful wins'.

I think it looks less flattering on my dad bod, but it is disco-esque as @Chookmentioned.

Superstitions are dead and buried right?

For me, it's weirdly more to do with sponsors.
If I see the TOOHEYS or LG logo, I feel happy.
If I see a KASPERSKY or WEBJET I feel sad.

With that said, I think both our current colour schemes look great, and I also quite linked the Blue guernsey, with the Red back.

What are your feelings towards EnergyWatch?

Paging @Supermercado

Definitely prefer it to any other away jumper we’ve seen.  The white versions and the red backed one just don’t feel like Melbourne.

It's funny when the royal blue jumper I think it came back in 2006 and then kept being used as our heritage guernsey for a few of years coinciding with some of the worst years we've ever gone through. So when it went away again I thought good riddance.

It came back in 2018 as our alternate top and I think there would've been a fair few Melbourne fans thinking, "oh boy here we go again". But it hasn't been the colours of failure that it was in the past, in fact I've actually grown to like it. I did think that we had gone to another alternate guernsey that was predominantly red on the back which I really liked, is that one no longer in use at all?

I think if we can wear our proper colours we should always do it.

I'd love to know the win loss record in royal blue since its return. I'd suggest it's very very high.

I didn't say the jumper made them play better. I was talking about what type of emotions are elicited by each respective jumper because of the memories associated with them.
If the glory days for you were the navy and blue, that's fine. ?

Sorry CB but the inference in your memory was the royal blue left you with greater memories of performances ie WINS  Isnt that what it's about?

You have introduced and posted this topic (from 1988 Experiences) and clearly infer success is recalled by the colour of the guernsey!

You can't have it both ways denying your preferred guernsey when challenged!

It's almost a testing of the waters to see what the D/L ers think albeit a tiny but tongue in cheek.

Who knows where the post might end!

Our traditional Club colours have been for  the Majority Navy  Blue  and Red red!

Its only the TV in 70's and a necessity for a clash jumper Now ( The one  which I like incidentally and most D/L support for a real clash guernsey) That are really alternate of any length of time

We are 4-0 and sailing as well as for 3 years (2018) or even 15 years ( 2006) and small irrelevancies like this are not I MO the time or place to Debate when we have so much good news and performance to concentrate on.

Basically our MCG record has not been great since 2006 even more recently and since we started in 2017 to triumph at Marvel then some clash games results would be Memorable in some eyes.

But our MCG home with the Navy and Red will now be more of a benchmark if we keep up our form that's started in 2021 in front of our fans again like last week against the Cats.

Forgot to add the Silver one which I didn't hate as much as the White ones.

That's the worst of the lot imv.  Duck egg's looking like a contender here

Royal blue makes our players look weak, skinny and callow. Navy blue makes them look like footballers.

At the end of the day DC I don't care  about jumpers all that much I just want a high ratio of wins.

I totally get that some people associate the Royal blue with a dark time in the club's history, however I personally love the colours.

I also love the fact that we no longer have the putrid white jumpers that we had for many years, that just felt so hollow.

I think it's great we can always wear red and blue and forge a new future with both jumpers, keeping a link to the past but focused on future success.

Ok, I went a step too far, and now repent in sackcloth and ashes. That is a thing of total ugliness!

Perhaps this was the real reason for the Barassi/Zantuck near punch on in the early ‘80’s.
Barass was clearly slagging off the boys’ masculinity and testicular fortitude by virtue of allowing themselves to wear such an effete jumper.

I love both. My very first demon jumper was the royal blue of the late 70's with number 2 on the back.  I was about 8 or 9 and I loved it. I loved it when in 1987 we returned to the navy and made finals straight away after 24 years - the first Melbourne finals series of my lifetime to that point.  My fondest memories of the finest Melbourne player I have seen are with the royal blue but equally, I love the navy as well. As a club there have been more lows than highs, but those jumpers are our past, present and future and they both represent Melbourne.

Back in those days I suspect nearly 100% of Melbourne jumpers had the number 2 on the back.

I'm a traditionalist and prefer the navy blue. But I want to shift gears a little. I find the current red has a touch too much orange in it. Having said that, it appears to be very similar to the colours Barassi is wearing in Sir Why You Little's avatar, so perhaps I should accept it as it is.

Young Irish immigrant kid new to a game which didn’t take much adapting to from GAA. Dees v Fitzroy and chose the Dees because of the jumper, which back in 1980 was the Royal blue.

Bit of nostalgia in the jumper for me. Love the dark blue jumper but for mine happy with the royal blue as our clash jumper

One can never trust the colours on an old photo perhaps several or more generations removed from the original. I do agree that maybe the red has changed over the years. Was more of a vivid fire engine red as I recall. Old dyes were warmer in tone. Modern dyes tend to be colder.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
