There is a saying in the stock market world - 'The trend is your friend'. For those not acquainted with the stock market it basically implies when you can clearly see a trend developing it becomes easier to predict the future.

Sadly, at Collingwood, the trend is not our friend. But it is, nonetheless, just as predictable.

This is clearly a side in its death roll.
Regardless of last night's result, we are no closer to winning a flag than we were last year. If anything we are further away.

What we are currently witnessing is a coach who probably knows he is marking time. What little coaching daring there was is gone. At this stage of the trend we find ourselves in self preservation mode. Hence, the reason the current side is still filled with players we know are just not good enough - JT, the Browns, Mayne, Hoskin -Elliott. You will never win a flag in 2021 with those guys. I'm sure Buckley knows it. But at this stage of the trend he has not conceded defeat and is still trying to scrape together wins rather than a better future for a new coach by playing kids.

The trend usually sees clinging to game winning hope continuing until it becomes blatantly obvious that a proper rebuild is more important than hanging on to the dream of playing finals.

It is also why we currently cling steadfastly to a game plan and structure week in week out. 

Case in point - Brisbane constantly flooded our forward 50 filling up space leaving Collingwood players free to build a defensive wall across the centre of the ground. Yet only ONCE did Collingwood try to go over the top (Howe). Instead, we kept chipping away in the belief that our sub standard forwards and wingers would do the job only to eventually turn the ball over & see Brisbane score on the counter attack time after time by running in to an open forward 50.

It was classic Rope-A-Dope.

Yet Howe, Crisp & Maynard can all tonk goals from just outside 50. Isn't that why we employ a team of coaches?

All Empires have a lifespan and this one is clearly coming to a slow and possibly ugly end.

The good news is so far Cox, Quayner and Daicos continue to improve. But we are still 6 good players + depth short of being a good team.

1. The stock market is more like the Caribbean gardens market but less stolen stuff.

2. Empire: a big building that Eddie reckons Adam Goodes hangs off.

3  clinging steadfastly: like how you hold your sister when she wakes up mid surprise love cuddle.

 

A well articulated price - change it to MFC late last year, with ANB, Spargo, etc and you would think it was bang on for us then too.  It is fascinating what a few wins does to the impression of mid range players. They are not such a bad team, but I agree they are on the decline vs others. Their problems will be ageing midfield (cant run out games) and forward line.  Bottom 6 are probably a worry, with Daicos and Quaynor rapidly becoming important players overtaking many bog ordinary players.

Was keen on him during his draft year but haven't closely monitored his progress since then. From memory he's a skilful lefty with pace which I thought would compliment our midfield nicely. Can't see Sydney giving him up easily though.

Exact same here, I wanted us to take him at #3, no idea how he really went last year though to be honest. Surprised he isn't getting a game for what is still a pretty young Sydney side though, probably not a great sign.

Remember it was going to have movable seats in parts of the ground! The people who  built it must be the same people who are organising the vaccination system. They are still struggling with how to get the vaccine vials from A to B.

to be fair,od, they've only had 12 months to prepare for it. pretty hard to do that from home when you don't have a clock on the wall and a great window view of the cbd.

I'd forgotten that.

I always remember them interviewing the ground manager who proudly told the world we would have to get used to going to the footy only if we pre-booked a ticket.

He was right eventually but I think they sacked him after about 6 weeks

Then there is the often empty Medallion club that seems to escape scrutiny and analysis... not to mention the fools that built an apartment block on the concourse

AFL have confirmed they'll keep it closed all year.

This will be my first time watching North closely this season.

In preparation I took a little time to examine how the two teams are tracking and all that... and now I have a deep sense of foreboding.

Losing to Port by almost ten goals is something several teams, even good ones, will have to stomach at times this season. Losing to the Suns like that when it isn't even clear that the Suns were particularly potent on the day - that's a worry.

And the Bulldogs don't strike me as a team likely to wind it back once they are well on top.  The game they are most comfortable playing is hot sabre through butterball so why would they switch to more awkward methods to 'rest'.  So many potential goal scorers, so many ways to turn clearances into quick scores, so much attacking power from center bounces.

I don't even like North and I feel sad.  If the horror doesn't happen this week, it will just be waiting for another week.

The layout of the stadium was set before the AFL wanted to be part of it (which happened very late)

Originally the stadium was to be for soccer, league & union and the AFL was going to stay at Waverley ... and those sports are usually not conducted in the early to mid afternoon - therefore no issue with the sun

The moveable seats became a redundant idea once the AFL came aboard
