Eddie said at the conference that today is a proud day for Collingwood .   What is the proud day Collingwood?

Where is the remorse Eddie?    You just don't get it.

It is typical PR spin to pretend a disaster is a great success and something to be proud of.  If you pay attention to what is being said it is usually clear that they are trying to pull the wool over your eyes.  But when that lie is just too much of a stretch to be at all credible, it is piling a disaster upon a disaster to try that sort of wheeze(*).  Whoever advised Eddie (himself?) to try that line needs a new profession.

(*) For the ultimate in PR wheezes watch the Absolute Power BBC radio and TV series with Stephen Fry and John BIrd as the owners of a scurrilous PR firm.

Eddie would be choking on the idea of paying compensation even more than trying to say s...o...r...r.......

Edit:  Jack Niall's report it-was-anything-but-a-proud-day-for-collingwood  says "...although it did not address Heritier Lumumba’s case, on the grounds that the 2010 premiership player had chosen not to play ball with the review".  Convenient!  Hard to understand why they couldn't still investigate what happened internally.  End result:  No-one to apologise to, no-one to compensate.  The more that comes out the more staged the whole thing looks.

They probably could have investigated it under point 1 of the terms of reference if they wanted to.

Our terms of reference were framed as five questions:

1. How effectively did the Club (including staff, Board and players) respond to allegations of racism?

2. Were there appropriate supports provided by the Club to respond to allegations of racism and ensure the cultural safety of all players, staff and Board members?

3. What changes in relevant policies, processes and systems have taken place and have these changes been effective?

4. Are the current policies, processes and systems currently in place adequate?

5. What changes are required to improve the Club’s responses to racism in the future?

Deny! Deny! Deny!

At least yesterday proved they've taken on board the findings of the report - oh wait, no, it only reaffirmed that the behaviour is ingrained and nothing has actually been learnt.

What did the report find?

Titled "Do Better", the report said that Collingwood's response to racism had failed in many areas. It found:

  • The club's attitude to dealing with racist incidents was to "deny, double-down and deflect"
  • Collingwood was more likely to respond to a racist incident when it was raised by the media than by a complaint within the club
  • Action taken to tackle racism was often done to protect the club's brand

That might be how it started but it permeates through all of society.  'Jobs for the Boys' is a variation of the theme.  As is 'nepotism'.

True. The Boys Club is variation on the theme of “boys sticking together”. A group of men protecting their turf and one another.  A milder term may be the word contacts or connections. It may include women but generally men are the ones who seek power, influence and status.

At the end of the day, Eddie is a product of his environment. Increasingly, we see in the media and entertainment industry, lots of Eddies. They do not know humility and contrition. However, they do not know what it takes “to make it.” Often that is to be loud, forceful, aggressive, opportunistic, opinionated and to be both seen and heard. Getting your own way irrespective of the methods becomes laudable. Hurting other people’s feelings particularly those without power and influence is a way of being. Regret does not feature in their vocabulary.  These days the marketing people call it developing your brand or product. Let’s face it, we live in a world focussed on selling,  marketing and spin.

Eddies response and comments are no surprise and are entirely natural for this media beast.

This may well be true hem. And some suggest that it is one reason why women make better leaders.

However i think the real issue is that it is an undeniable fact that in almost every western, democratic society (and others too no doubt) that men are the ones who have the power, influence and status.

And it is equally true that most men are in no hurry to cede their power, influence and status.

My wife, who is woman, left her previous employer because a toxic  'girls club' culture had developed; most people are in no hurry to cede their power, influence and status.

One of the best or perhaps worst cases is the AFL. What the AFL badly needs is  an outside appointed to replace Gil. But I doubt it will happen. Old boys clubs are only replaced with them kicking and struggling to preserve the status quo.

Have you forgotten that Collingwood appointed these people to do the review. They were not forced on them by some outside organisation. Me thinks you protest  too much.

1. That doesn't shock me. There is however a school of thought that in business there is significant pressure on women who are ambitious and seek leadership positions to play the 'man's game' and adopt the behaviors that go with that game

2. True. I wasn't suggesting men have a mortgage on wanting to hold onto power. At the risk of generalizing, I do think though that at women are better at comprise and sharing power and not as interested in influence or status for its own sake

Eddie will be gone by the end of the month if not earlier.

Sponsors will have been on the phone demanding action and while not specifically asking for Eddie to go that will be the implied price.

Eddie will be publicly painted as a martyr in that he will say that the issue had become about him and that it should be about the way in which Collingwood has openly dealt with the issue.

I used to think that a lot of the complaining about racism was compounded by people being too thin skinned.

I now understand that I will never completely understand the feelings of a person who experiences racism because I can never walk in their shoes. Fortunately for me I have come to understand that most people with a skin colour other than white experience the problem on a regular basis.

We have to do better as individuals and as a group.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
