In an interview discussed here:

Goodwin said of B.Brown and Weideman:  "They're both on track, pretty much in line with each other..."we'll have to manage that as a team. They'll both obviously come back through the VFL, so we'll get a good indication as to when they're ready to play AFL footy."

So whatever the time frame is it applies to both and we may not see them in the seniors for quite a while..

Does anyone know if the two months quoted applies to Ben Brown as well as Weideman. The initial thoughts for Ben Brown when he was operated on was 4-6.

Long suffering The  four for Ben  was for him to start running at 4 weeks so 6 was never the time based on that initial advice.  More like 8/10 .

Sam was 10/12 weeks from Day 1 Which may indicate  he is doing ok but Ben  May be a bit behind it seems.

I think we all should be mindful of just what Goody has said re VFL and also it may not be the absolute body blow it first seemed depending upon Tmac M.Brown form and fitness. Jacko Majak and Kye Eclase.Plus our new found mix of smalls and Fritta as supporting  acts.

Clearly we are looking at it long term rather than short which means we still believe we will expect to compete and win say 3/4 ( or more) out of our first 6.

Demons midfielder Jack Viney is facing an uphill battle to return from foot surgery for round one, but Angus Brayshaw will play in a VFL practice match this weekend as he makes his bid to play in the season opener. Kysaiah Pickett should also be in the frame, with the exciting forward to return to Victoria on Sunday after being allowed to travel to Perth for personal reasons due to a family bereavement. Jake Melksham is another that has his eyes set on a round one return, having dealt with a hamstring complaint. Key forward duo Ben Brown (knee) and Sam Weideman (leg) will both miss the opening stages of the season and could still be around two months away in their recoveries. Meanwhile, youngster Aaron Nietschke is set to miss the entire season after cruelly rupturing his ACL for the third time. – Riley Beveridge

Also on the doubtful/unknown list:

Joel Smith...hasn't been sighted outside the rehab group

Hibberd....much the same

All good questions George, pity the club has not started giving injury reports, there is not even a spot on the web site so far this year.

They had an injury update last week. That said, none of the 3 names George pointed out got a mention. Just to add to the mystery, AVB was listed to play in game B on the Friday but then didn't.

In between giggling I think I take out of this that Joel to play Monday I think they meant in the practice game at Whitten oval (closed to public) and Hibbard's back in full training but won't play? But that clip could be interpreted a few ways

Oh and Shhhh! it's a secret! We're not meant to know about Kye training with us.

Joel Smith has dislocated his finger and is expected to miss 3 weeks, apparently quite a nasty one that broke the skin

Disappointing to hear...he's body just doesn't seem.up to the rigours of AFL footy.

Jeez no matter where he gets injured it seems serious! Poor bugger.

Jesus that sounds horrible. Wishing him a quick recovery.
Injuries are starting to mount. If May is not right for round 1 I can’t see us winning. Especially with no fire power up front and probably no Viney or Gus.

Agree. Joel Smith has spent more weeks injured than active. I thought last year that he might have been traded or delisted. Obviously the coach sees something in him despite his limited games and limited showings to date.

Injury list form yesterday

PLAYER  INJURY   ESTIMATED RETURN

 Angus Brayshaw        Foot Test

 Ben Brown                   Knee 4-6 weeks

 Michael Hibberd         Ankle TBC

 Marty Hore                  Knee Season

 Joel Smith                  Finger Test

Brayshaw, Melksham, Salem will need to prove their fitness this weekend you'd imgaine

You would think that brayshaw, melk and  Salem will get another run this weekend and will be good to go round 1.

May will also be good after almost 2 weeks off...

this will only leave viney, brown and weid as major puts for round 1...

not a terrible result. Let’s hope the interrupted pre season doesn’t cause major issues

Can someone please inform me of when Joel Smith did his finger? Was he playing last Monday and dislocated it, or did he do it at some other training session? Not sure where or when I read it, but i think they said he would be out for three weeks. If he did it last Monday, then I think "test" would be the wrong description for him in the above table.

You sure about that.. Gus and Gawny said he was due to play the VFL game against the doggies. It actually sounded like he did it in the doggies game.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
