2021 List and Contract Details

I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of list management, but looking at this list I can make a good estimated guess as to the rationale behind re-signing Smith.

Not including rookies, everyone out of contract this year could justifiably be delisted or traded. That's a 10 player turn over which I think is unrealistic in the present covid climate. Then looking at the out of contract list for 2022, nearly all are best 22 with players like Laurie and Rosman surely deserving of more time on our list for development. Melksham the only obvious one at risk of not getting a renewal and McDonald pending his continuation of form.

Seems like a simple solution to me of offering one year contracts to depth players. Might sound harsh but that would give us a 'delisting buffer' to protect the core of our list that we want to keep. Lockhart, Bedford, Weideman perhaps Hibberd and one or two others I wouldn't be surprised we signed on for at least next year.

We can then delist the remaining players this year, bring in 2-3 draftees plus 1-2 trades or free agents.

Think people get caught up in some players thay are re-signed outside of the best 22. When you have a list of 36players + I don't think its unreasonable to suggest clubs will have players on the list that are nothing more than injury fodder with the potential to play a role if injury requires. If they develop on the list and break into the 22, then that's a bonus.

My thinking: Baker and Hore probably unlikely to get a nod for next year, with Jetta, Jones and VDB probable retirees.

Means Weid, Hibberd, and Lockhart probably get extensions.

Would leave Lockhart, Hibberd, and Melksham in the gun for 2022.

Most of this squad can stay together until 2024 without any key retirement risks, which is great.

Update for J. Smith one year extension,

As the club is in list management mode, I wouldn't be surprised to see a flurry of contract renewals in the next month or so.

Hopefully, some of the 2022 OOC players sign early extensions especially Jackson and Petty.

perhaps update the ages at end of contract? e.g. trac and salem will be 33 when their contracts expire

I see Turner has aged 5 years over the last few weeks, and Smith has become younger, so he has been re-signed on that basis.

Thanks.

I somehow lost the speadsheet I usually use so had to reconstruct the whole thing.  Missed some small details.  Will correct on next update.

The latest list reflects Jones' retirement and Tom McDonald's 2 year contract extension, from 2022 to 2024.

And I've inserted a table to track list changes.

You'd think Jackson and Petty will be big targets for other clubs next year, with Oliver and Rivers the year after. But otherwise the core of the list has been locked up lock term hasn't it?

Port will throw big cash at Petty.

They're in desperate need of quality key defender.

Jonas will be 31 next year. Looked cooked on the weekend.

Lienert will either be traded or delisted. Barely played this year.

Clurey played 1 more AFL game after we beat them. Spent 2nd half of the year in the SANFL.

McKenzie is not even a key back and more of a flanker, especially at 191cm. But due to lack of defensive talls he had to go play on Naughton who slaughtered him. He was a delisted free agent pick up depth player and will be 30 next year.

Alir is the only decent defender for them. But he's not a lockdown defender they desperately need and Petty fits that.

List is in such good shape, just need the flag/s to confirm it.

It is a premiership winning list.  But they are so hard to win.

With the exception of Laurie every player OOC after this year has been an entrenched or semi regular selected 23 this year.

I can see a few obvious list reductions this year.  But next year it will become very difficult to choose who goes.  I guess players who aren't getting games will move on ala Melksham's interest in going elsewhere, if rumour is true.

Not important @Lucifer's Hero but I think Jordon will be a FA when his contract is up because he was delisted at one stage?

And agree with others… the list looks in really good shape. Would love to get long term deals locked away for LJ and Clarry!

Update for: Weideman contract to 2023, departure of Vandenberg, Lockhart, Nietschke and Jetta.😢

In a way this is a changing of the guard with the departure of two stalwarts, Jones and Jetta that go back to the dark years.

A reporter mentioned at the weekend that Hibberd will be given a one year extension which is well deserved.

Not sure what the final allowed list numbers will be for 2022 so the Current List numbers are based on what we had in 2021.

Any errors please let me know and I will pick up with the next update.

Thank you Luci or should I say Premiers

Thus far it is 4 of the senior list and 2 of the rookie, correct me if I am wrong. Given that Chandler was emergency for the GF I expect he may go onto the senior list. As I understand it we currently only have 3 draft picks for 3 vacancies if Kade is upgraded. Those picks are 33, 42 & 54 and if he is is still available after pick 20 we may use one on Mac Andrew. I don't see us being very active in the draft.

Brown & Daw are interesting and can choose to go elsewhere having already been delisted once. Smith, Declase and Turner one can hardly assess given the limited opportunities. Might be a quiet trade year for us,

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
