If you think that Melksham ranks higher in terms of importance to the team than May, Petracca or Oliver, you might be on your own brother.

Lever would be well down the pecking order.

Yet to do much at mfc.  Injury free 2020.  3rd year at the club.  No excuses.

We paid far too much for Lever and his reputation (based on his 2017 season) exceeds his on field performance.

Frost at Hawthorn was just as good as Lever this year.

However, Lever's ability to position himself and take a clutch mark in close games is impressive and important.

Melksham must incriminating have photos of @Werridee, like he does of Goody.

Keeping him out of the side is very important for our chances next year

Perhaps but the 4th most important player in the pecking order?  Ahead of Petracca, Oliver, May, Lamgdon, B. Brown?  Not for mine.

100% agreement from me LH.

Melksham (at his best) in 2018 was very important to how well we played and our set up of attack on the score board. Not the be-all, and end-all of that campaign, but important. Cant live in the past however so if he can get that back (with what is hopefully a reasonably normal 2021 season), that is huge for us. If not, he must be dropped and other players provided ample opportunity to shine.

Respect the list and good on you for having a go..  No way Petracca is 5th most important player, he is number 1, then Oliver, then May, then Gawn then Ben Brown.

But we all see it differently.

Thanks Werridee. Very interesting and a great thought - starter.

Just could you clarify is someone's position on the list is due to their importance to the team if they played their role correctly, or is it becuase of their talent, latent or otherwise.

for example, I don't think Viney is near No. 2 but you might think if he played to his ability and in his best role, he is the number 2 in team value? Thus why is Lever higher than MAy - because of his intercept acpability which you value more highly than May's lockdown ability?

Can you expand?

Thanks

Are we talking the most important players playing at top form for us to get deep into finals or just best players.  To me we need the below players at their absolute best for us to be a contender in 2021

Petracca

Gawn

May

Brown

Tmac/Weiderman

Lever

Oliver

Brayshaw

Salem

Fritsch

Hibberd

Viney

Melksham

Langdon

If these group of players can bring their best football on a consistent basis we can go deep into September.  The others that will make up the 22 will lift if these guys play well.  TMac/Weiderman I combined as I see that second tall forward roll an extremely Vital role, one of these guys need to step up.  I expect Jackson to be more a mobile forward second ruck rather that a key forward.

My list is based on players we need at their best to contend.  Vital that our 2 key defenders and key forwards take control, if we cant step up in these key roles we will struggle

Werridee I agree with the first 23 players just differ on their ranking although I like the make up of your team.

As for the rankings 0liver is our most important player. He is durable he is consistent and an accumulator almost. always in the game.      No  disrespect to Gawny , Trac, Vines and May.

Why is Melksham so highly ranked?

Edited by nosoupforme

Interesting post @WERRIDEE - I love how we all see the playing list in different ways. What I do take from your list, however you look at it, is that we are still probably 2 or 3 strong players short of a consistent Top 4 list. The Casey team looks great, though!

Why is Melksham so highly ranked?

No he isn't, Oliver gets the Footy but doesn't really hurt sides.  I would take a 15 touch game from Petracca over a 30+ touch game from Oliver any day of the week.

Melksham is rated highly on his talent, he is an extremely talented and damaging player we just don't see it consistently enough, if he can delivery it on a regular basis we are winning more games, that is why he is rated as important.

listing one by one is fraught with issues given different opponents and playing conditions.

I prefer to list in groups of five.

I doubt that I would have Lever i the top ten. If he was a better kick of the ball post marking he might get there but the constant up and under is frustrating.

Anyone remember Howe. Spectacular mark. Would get up take 15 seconds plus and give off a lousy kick

Werridee, what's your thinking behind placing Melksham 3rd on your list?

Melksham and Lever were deputy vice captains so leadership is why they are so high.

Our most important players is dependent on the opponent we are playing. We need to se the whole squad to win each week.

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.
