It is unbelievable.  They want special allowances. Ridiculous.  It’s unfortunate to have a young man with mental illness like Dayne Beams (or repeated concussions like KK ) but the AFL made the rules and must enforce them. Otherwise it smacks of continuing bias to some clubs.

Schwartz would have been the best player in the league if not for his knees. Oliver will go down as a great MFC player and a very good AFL player on form. I hope he gets better but he needs to work on a lot of things other than raw numbers.

Each to their own. I don't know how many times I have to say it. I rate midfielders much higher.

Fair points but why should concussion or mental health be treated differently for sal cap purposes than retirements for career ending, physical injuries.  None of them are foreseeable.

If relief is to exist in sal caps it needs to be based on a considered policy in consultation with other clubs not a knee-jerk reaction to a Coll problem.  With adequate protections built in so retirements aren't misrepresented by clubs.

exactly, unless we go with NFL style "guaranteed/non-guaranteed" contracts which the AFLPA would be vehemently against

Shameless club.  Essendon-like scum.

Is Collingwood the richest club in the land? I would have thought West Coast, Richmond and Adelaide might be wealthier these days. And possibly Fremantle.

For some time I have thought Trump the biggest [censored] going round. But No. It seems the Pies management now have that honour. How could they possibly ask for salary cap relief? This is of their own making pure and simple. At the time of the Grundy contract I was wondering how they could afford that in their salary cap. Even from the outside it looked strange.

Do you think Collingwood might add some "Make Collingwood Great Again" caps to their merch?

"A settlement could fall under the league’s medical payout allowance rather than the Magpies’ salary, with the club finding themselves “in no man’s land” and forced to move on four players in the trade period".

@La Dee-vina ComediaIts looking like that 'secret herbs and spices' situation you alluded to.

They have just had several million sal cap relief over the next few years by trading players.  If Beams payout is outside the sal cap that is another $1.0 m sal cap relief over the next two years.

They will have their 'fighting fund' to achieve their stated goal to aggressively target FA's and OOC players to stay in premiership contention.

Just like the clubs that have incompetently managed finance, recruiting or list management have to take their medicine so should Coll for incompetent sal cap management.

I wonder if Freo and Jesse might have considered a medical payout from the AFL.  It would be about 2-3 times financially better for Jesse than the one year contract he has at GWS.  I wonder if Sydney will consider retiring Buddy who like Beams has had mental health and injury issues and barely played for several years.  Tricky precedent for the AFL to allow termination payments outside the sal cap.

Hope other clubs are quietly lobbying the AFL to ensure Coll carry the Beams cost in their sal cap.

It would not surprise me LDC.

Even if Collingwood gets salary cap relief, it has presumably seriously damaged its relationships with its players. Which players now would believe their contracts are secure?

It beggars belief that Eddie and the current Board do not appear to be under any serious pressure. I think he's been there 22 years in which time they've won one Premiership but at the same time lost their mantle as the most successful club in terms of membership and, I suspect, financially and commercially.

I would settle for that same results at the Dees for the last 22 years LDC.

I wonder how secure Brodie Grundy is feeling. He signed a 7 year deal but clearly that doesn't mean much at theat club.

Well if his form next year is as bad as 2020, then they might be looking to move him on, keep it consistent Collingwood.

Sydney will have pay baddy all of his money in the cap, they where already told that when they signed him, rule has already been put in place, it's not like they did not know the risk.

Eddie and his pupett board will be under pressure, depending on the win loss record next year, the only thing that matters in footy is wins, wins solves everything.

The rule for early termination/retirement of an acquired FA was brought in after the Buddy contract.

My point is if the Beams payout is covered by the AFL medical allowance why couldn't Sydney (or Freo with Jesse, if both willing) do the same.  Similar situations:  mental health issues, on-going injuries, extended absence from training or games due to those issues.

Well with Hogan, his contact has been torn up, he has a totally new contract, and he is still playing beams is not, and Sydney will not be allowed to matter what happens with buddy, the buddy rule covers all of those situations, it such a long contract, Sydney had no intention of having buddy for 9 years, but they [censored]@st the AFL so much they wanted to teach them a lesson

I hear you.

But if I were a Collingwood member and knew that the club had all the resources that it has had, I'm not sure one Premiership in the last 30 years (22 under Eddie) is an acceptable return.

I understand that the AFL didn’t accept Collingwood’s submission regarding the Beams payout which means they still have a $1m salary cap issue going forward for the next two seasons. The bottom line might have to be some further delistings before the next list announcement.

That is excellent news.  It would have set a terrible precedent and unfair to those clubs that have carried medical terminations in their sal cap.

If Beams wanted to help the club he would sacrifice some or all of the next two years leftin his contract.  Tom Boyd (who also retired for mental health reasons) had the good grace to forfeit all monies owing.

Instead, Beams has been paid about a $1m over the last two years for playing just 9 games.  After front ending his contract at Brisbane, when it dropped back he went to the Pies to top up again.  I would imagine his Coll team mates wouldn't be too happy about back ending their own contracts to accommodate his just to watch him not turn up.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
