It's mind boggling that he bulked up in the first place. Really keen to see how he goes in the pre-season time trials.

Hope he comes back hard next year.

I really think this is a furphy. When we wanted to trade him we were saying things like we'd bulked him up and if he lost that weight he'd be magically back to 2018 McDonald. In other words, he'll be great, take a punt on him, please.

No one did and IMO it's telling.

Still not 100% sure on trading so heavily into this draft at the expense of next year’s first rounder. We can still trade picks, so I wouldn’t be totally surprised to see us make more moves, but the club does seem pretty set on going for it in the here and now.

I am more than a bit interested in what our draft hand ends up being. As others have said, i dont see us taking out current group of picks to the draft. There is plenty of time for JM to get us firmly into the top 10 this year and thats what i think will happen. Obviously he (and whoever is working with him) have been as busy as termites in a sawmill wrangling deals to get us higher into the draft, and there must be a specific target or 2 they have in mind that wont last until the 20's. Seems reasonable imo, especially when you consider that we traded out of the first round next year to go higher this year. The age profile of our list means we need to get in top end talent ASAP and not just do the standard first rounder year on year. We are running out of time to get this list to a flag or 3. Im all for us using this strategy if it means we top up while our best players are all at (or entering) their peak.

BTW, i cant help but make mention of Collingwoods trade period.

What an epic, ghastly mess they have made of it. The one upside for the comp is that it provides evidence that CFC must closely obey the salary cap rules to be dumping so much for so little. If only Geelong would do the same........

8/10 score.

Getting good value pick 31 for Preuss

Getting Ben Brown for equivalent mid 2nd round

trade pick swaps to get 18 & 19  & kept 28

Witherden - we needed a small skilled defender to go alongside May and Lever

missed the Pies fire sale. Phillips was a good fit and ultimately was available.
lost first round 2021 pick

?kept Tmcd on serious $$ but unsure where he fits in our best team. Probably as an emergency!

Part of me is surprised that we held onto all of Viney / Brayshaw / Harmes as much as I love them all.  I think there would have to be a good chance that one of them or even Oliver or Petracca may seek midfield opportunities after next season if the midfield is similar  which may get us back into the first round next year.  But if it clicks and they all have good years then we probably don't need a first rounder next year anyway!  Hell, if the bulldogs can fit that amount of talent into their midfield then surely we can find a way to make it work.  Hopefully Yze can do it!

Seeing a lot about not picking up a wingman, and not a lot about Baker, am I the only one that was impressed with what he did with his opportunities?

Very happy with Big Bargain Ben Brown.
This probably sounds stupid, but I think he was a better fit for Geelong than Cameron is. They can hit a lead up forward, Brown is an excellent lead up forward. Cameron isn’t. Far too often he prefers to lead away from the ball carrier. I think Geelong sold the farm when there was a cheaper and possibly better option, and only 5 months in age difference. Could be medical but what would Geelong know if they didn’t test him.

Welcome back DA. Where have you been?

And I'm very happy with BBBB, but there's not enough exposed evidenced on Baker for me to trust that he'd be a walk up start come Round 1 next year.

I’ve been checking in mate, but haven’t had the enthusiasm for footy that I usually do. And avoid checking in when we lose which there’s been plenty of.

Not enough for Baker to be a walk up start you’re right, but I think there’s a player in there. Got the skills and pace, add a tank and we’re good to go.

Worst case scenario Langdon plays both wings. He’s everywhere anyway.

I think JM and the team did very well in the circumstances. Not being able to move TMac on seems to have frustrated our ability to bring someone else in.

My only nagging regret is the hawks picking up Phillips for pick 65 and the pies paying $150k salary in year 1. Even with Tmac staying you’d think we could have fitted Phillips into the cap. Perhaps the club just didn’t rate him or Phillips didn’t want to join us. I know we’ve traded up to secure 2 late first rounders but I’m prefer adding mature players than youngsters. We have to be pushing for Top 4 next year and draftees aren’t going to get us there.

That said really looking forward to seeing what JT can do in the draft.

I think the one thing we miss here is that the Tommy Mac contract screwed us.

If we had of moved Tommy on I would have given us a higher rating.

It may still come back to haunt us with contracts to be signed and inability to bring players into the club.

The immediate impact is it most probably kept us out of the Treloar trade.

We can't afford to be paying around 700k for depth.

So whilst we can sit on the high horse and laugh at C/Wood they have fixed their cap issue, they moved on who they wanted to move on. The way they did it may come back and bite them and it should but in the end we still have a player we needed to move on.

Of course you can't create a market if it's not there and no one was interested in Tommy so we did the best with the hand we held...

When I heard this excuse trotted out previously in the media I thought it must have been made up. What a pathetic reason to kick off a trade. I would be furious Treloar’s shoes.

Yep.  I was very keen for the MFC to become a McDonald-free zone.

In 2021 he'll be bending us over even when he's kicking the dew.

I'm not one of those supporters who tries to make good of a bad situation.  It's shouse that we kept him.

But I can still laugh at Collingwood.

Impossible to say until we know what Mahoney does with the picks we landed.

Very concerned that we traded away our 1st rounder in 2021.   That could easily be a top 5 pick.

So you expect us to finish 14th - 18th ?  Don't think so!

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hawks, Coll and Ess in that range...well one can hope.

I thought he said that he was going to come back for pre-season, work hard and look to get back into our best 22?

Perhaps that might have been Tom he was talking about?

Yes that was Tom he was talking about, Trade Radio initially reported it on Twitter as Oscar but it was Tom he was talking about.

We went from 4th in 2018 to 16th in 2019.

I expect us to do well in 2021 but wont be surprised if we crumble.

Agree with you AF to a certain degree, i just feel we need a more flexible F50. I think we are banking on Spargo, Hunt and Kosi to go to another level in 2021.

I don’t want us to be a copycat club, its a sign of weakness and will not defeat a Richmond side in september.

I happy with our conducted business in trade week.

Happy days.

Exactly. The game is always evolving. Evolution often happens when someone comes up with a method to defeat the existing strong clubs. I'd love to see us bring back something like the fast, attacking style of Daniher's and Balme's best sides that blew the opposition away. It needs plenty of run, a committed, united back six and multiple strong marking targets up forward.

We potentially have all of those elements in some degree.

Hmmm, don’t know about that. Before this season they were widely tipped to be top 4, fell into the finals, got pantsed by St Kilda in a deplorable game. Picked up Treloar, will he really make the difference? Dunkley does not want to be there, from what I understand due to serious culture issues. Don’t think they are that good.

Happy with Benny Brown, was hoping for an outside mid, but maybe we can get one during the draft?

Looing forward to the draft this year, to see what JT is going for??

As for other teams, bulldogs were clear winners, not looking forward to playing them next year?

The pies are going to be in a world of pain for the next few years, and only have them selves to blame.?

Geelong gave up way too much for just one player, would not be happy if it was us who gave up, was it 3 top picks? ?

We'll have greater problems than just that pick if we're finishing bottom 5 next year.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
