FWIW I've already posted my preference in this thread:

  • May, Petty, Lever
  • Salem, Hibberd, Rivers, Smith

But Smith is unproven I agree

I can go with everyone but Smith. I'd play Melksham or Fritsch there.

Can't say BB.  All I can say is I wouldn't make it up, not even for a 'rumours' thread.  Not my style.

I wouldn't be surprised if players felt that at every club. It happens in every sporting club, professional or local, and every work place.

The real issue is why is it happening?

Some players will get more leniency because they have runs on the board.  Because they have a bigger upside. Because they add secondary value (eg leadership, or decoy) as well as their main role. Others will underperform in obvious measures (eg disposals) but out perform others in team measures (eg position in a zone, effort, smothers). Some might seemingly compete for a position but actually be playing different roles.

Some players respond well to harsh treatment (eg get a rocket if they are yelled at or dropped). Others need a hug and a show of faith to build or regain confidence.

It is why it's hard to coach young sides vs experienced sides. Once you are established, you know how to perform and motivate yourself. The coaches have known you for long enough that they know how to help if you need it.

So it is absolutely the coaches job to play favourites in order to maximise bothe the short term performance and the long term development of the team. That's what they are paid for, those are the hard, complex calls.

This is why many people who aren't necessarily Goodwin supporters will still say they want to stay the course with him to see the outcome. I don't know if he is playing the right favourites game or not. I certainly disagree, or can't understand the reason behind some. But how could I? I've never met any of them, and don't know the basis for their decisions.

Have we tried Smith in the medium HBF role? I know we've tried him as a tall and a small to imo limited success. I'm not sure he has the smarts to play the attacking HBF, but could he play a pure negating role on an opposition "feeder HFF" ie the players who win the ball and get it inside 50?

The club may well try this, but I wouldn't.

Who are you playing at halfback in place of Salem? We're short of capable small-medium defenders as it is.

Surely Rivers

Gimme 7 backs not including Salem.  Agreed Rivers is one of them, but I think you'll find we need Salem there too.

We need 7 for the rotation PSD and Lockhart was out of favour last year.

Take your pick, Petty, Smith, Jetta( although the end is near) and Tmac is looking more likely to stay

So Polly

You are saying we are short a couple of back men

Why don't we address this preseason

Lochardt should replace Nev

We need back pocket and running halfback

Well played @chook fowler, not many footy forums can boast the linguistic magnificence of Demonland.

Yes, but hopefully with the right result in the end in both cases.

Brayshaw as our 5th mid would be a disaster. He would have 78% bench time. We'd be better off trading him.

Following the trade news early today via Zero Hanger  under player changes to date, two unknown demon players were to be transferred to the Adelaide Crows. There were no names , then later in the day the incident disappeared. Does anyone know if Brayshaw is going to get traded , surely we can't play him and Viney play in the one side.

ANB has been linked to Crows a few weeks back, not sure who else might be a potential to head to Adelaide.

I'm going to go with ANB and one of the McDonald brothers.

Harmes and ANB are both South Aussies and the right age bracket for the crows

Why not ?

That's what  the coaches are Paid for, to work out the positions and styles of games fir each player at your disposal.

Jack needs to Cease trying to be a bulldozer all the time where he hold onto the call and gets caught holding. He also needs to look at kicking or handball ing on his right side and making his first option to move the hall to our outside runners.
Jack should be able to play up forward on the ball and/or roam on the FP or HFFlank Putting pressure on the defenders with his strong tackling.

Gus is good in close and also On the outside and is a good disposer when he can balance and launch a good left or right foot pass.

He is not great at two way running ie defending from defence However letssee this year if New Coach Yze can influence our mids games and versitility.

yes Locky is the small replacement IMO and Rivers  our major running half back Or Salem snd Hibbo can do that also. ( I prefer Salem on wing or up forward to maximise his disposal and elite kicking skills.  Maybe Hunt or Smith are also able to be used for run and carry when given an opportunity Down back.

Our defence still can be better but May Lever Tomlinson and Petty ( prefer up forward ) even Mitch  Brown if retained can Play the big role. Hire IMO is a Lever clone fir the intercepting duties!

No AF Fritta must be chiefly a forward which is our Achilles heel.

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
