James Frawley Retires... And Starts Playing Again

Demonland

Recommended Posts

Like others I was disappointed in him leaving. But I still think he deserves acknowledgment for what he did now he is retiring. Though I'm not comparing him to Ronald Dale, I think we learned to move on and admire No 31 despite our shock and disappointment. when he left.

As a youngster I was  shattered when Barass left..he had only just sent me a signed photo the week before the news broke. But it was only in later years when I heard the full story. I don't blame him for leaving. The behaviour and attitude of club officials and the way they treated him and Norm Smith was appalling.

I think James was in a different category to some players who really owed the club for their effort and patience-and  you all can think of some names there.

Players have other responsibilities to family and  future and other things we are not aware of. Footy is only one part of life much as it is important to us all.

So good luck Chip and thanks for what you gave the club. I was ruddy annoyed when you went but you served the club well whilst you were there- we should always remember that. Hopefully another Frawley will be in red and blue in a  few years.

He was a gun back in 2010. Not sure what happened.

any player with trade value left during our most horrible years aside from jones. I think most people would do the same. After putting in 8 years, I don’t begrudge him. People don’t hate rivers etc for leaving.

I remember when he was interviewed with Lynden Dunn, and Chip wouldn’t look at the Camera when asked about his next contract. Long before “the very end”

Chip was part of the problem, nobody cared except the Members and Supporters

Pretty harsh to say he didn't care. He cared enough to sign a 4 year deal when we were pretty bad. Then came the neeld years and it was obvious the club was going nowhere. It's easy to say only supporters care when I can say plenty of supporters dropped off during those hard years. We have supporters who are saying they won't renew next year with Goodwin in charge. When you don't have to be at the game getting smashed by 100 points each week and face the public...

Watching his efforts in the latter part of his time at Melb was my tipping point to give up my memberships and stop giving up my time to go watch games live. Was so disappointed with the club in general...i felt he should have been told to take the jumper off and leave on the spot. Understand that's not how it works as we had to try and hold some value for his departure, but i just thought that the disresepect to what should be treated as a privileged position was appaling.

Good luck to you Chip and congratulations on your fine career 239 and a premiership. You deserve that. That is what you wanted.

Deserted the ship when it was sinking just save yourself don't worry about  the  crew.  Lucky we didn't make you the captain at the time.   Not sad to see you retire.

Haha - you were “ruddy annoyed” - I haven’t heard that saying since I last had tea and scones with the Queen.

I think the Queen would have added "WE are not amused!" LOL

Just as an aside Neil, do you remember Froggy wearing Number 12  before he  got the number 5? Would I be wrong in thinking  he might have started his career as a rover for a few games at least before going to the back pocket?

Cheap flag? Almost best on ground in that GF. Cheap shot.

He jumped on the Coattails of 13-14

Don’t care how he played on the day. I had no interest in watching Whorethorn’s 13th Flag

Meh.

Jumped ship to chase success in our lowest point.

Good riddance

Harsh, very harsh. And people also attack Jack Viney for staying, saying they would have helped 'pack his bags' to leave? Inconsistent - and indicative of the gutless viciousness towards players that pervades this site.

Yeah, I can't bring myself to have hard feelings.  Got to let things go.

At the time he left it was painful because it brought us all face to face with the questions of 'Do we really believe this club will turn around' and 'Why are we still with them ourselves?'

I'd rather take it as a reminder to send a respectful nod to Nathan Jones than invest much effort in being bitter at James Frawley.

Hi SWYL  I hear where you are coming from on this. Barassi leaving still hurts me a lot. But I'm still grateful for what he gave us and respect him a lot. Being born in 1950 I'm among a few of the older folk on here who have gone through the pain for each of those 56 years. I think I care enough. And  I still think its the right thing to do to congratulate a player on a fine career-even if they end up elsewhere. But I can relate to your feelings about loyalty.

Pretty simplistic view. How about this, you create an environment that encourages a good culture so loyal people don't want to leave. As I said he was willing to put up with some of our [censored] to stay for 4 years.

In those 4 years we ruined the development and playing careers of numerous players... grimes, trengove, Morton and Gysberts to name a few. They might not all have been starts but I honestly think if they were given opportunities in a better environment their careers would've been different.

Now if my my workplace had a [censored] culture I wouldn't want to stay. I would say if we had a decent environment frawley probably would've stayed. The club fosters the right environment and you'll never get anywhere blaming good players for leaving if we can't create the right environment.

Unfortunately for us. We've got some sort of atrachment and don't have a direct look in in that environment to call it quits. We just hope that it changes.

When someone retires after 239 games, most of them at Melbourne, the time for snubbing and holding grudges is over. I realise that's hard for some supporters, but it would look really bad and petty if the club itself didn't recognise a significant career.

Sure, that's not the point I was making though. I don't think the club needed to say anything.

What were your thoughts on Goody giving Woosha a handshake after the essendon game? And the team giving an ‘avenue of honour’?

I don’t really care about the post, nothing more than cheap wave when driving up a narrow street or quick sorry without looking at someone when accidentally bumping in the supermarket

He chose his career, that’s fine

But i feel he disrespected the MFC Jumper in 2014 and that won’t change -  and he walked into a Club that was always going to win that 3rd Flag

We all see it differently

If he had left at the end of 2013 I would agree with you.
but he played that last year under Roosy and put up the White Flag ?

It left a sour taste in my mouth

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
