If I was MFC I'd be calling Tom's manager right now to enquire. Why give Smith a contract for 2-3 years or look at Polec when we can get Phillips who's 24. Imagine Langers and Phillips on each side of the wing, i'd be bloody stoked!

big difference is one comes free and the other would cost a 2nd round pick

Not if we give them T.Mac, who the pies are reportedly interested in. Then we could hopefully clear up cap space for Ben Brown.

so the price would be Philips for Tmac while smith is still free

The St Kilda runners can kick though. Paton, Clark, Billings, Sinclair, Hill, Butler can all hit targets.

The Saints have his brother. Similar player. Elite tank and runs all day. He played 4 games for the year.

We desperately needed a guy like Langdon to add some run, but given our inside mids aren't great kicks either do we really need to keep adding shoddy kickers for short term gain?

I coached both of them from a young age. Tom is a better player in my view.

Smith and Polec are both lovely kicks, while Tom is a neat enough kick.

Yep, I'm certainly more keen on Phillips then I am Smith. Tom McDonald for Phillips is a no brainer. Wouldn't even mind throwing one of our 3rd rounders in with it in order to get it across the line.

Definitely prefer Phillips to Smith, if I had a choice it wouldn't even be close. Phillips for me too

If we have our interest and eggs in the Isaac Smith basket then I can't see how we will be chasing Phillips. Where does he fit in all of a sudden?

Unless Smith turns us down then I cannot see us chasing Phillips.

You are joking aren’t you? T Mac is worth more than Phillips

If ANB and possibly Hannan leaving, I think he could play the high half forward role

Collingwood fans will say that's why he has stagnated this year due to being moved to half forward in favour of Daicos.

Smith sounds like is the priority and we’ll look at other options like Polec and Phillips if he stays.

Problem with that other clubs by then will be in deep discussion with both players if not already.

Hibberd - May - Lever

Smith - Tomlinson - Salem

Polec - Oliver - Langdon

Phillips - etc etc

We'll have room for runners. Add those three and our outside speed finally compliments our inside ball winners.

Maybe with some creative accounting both clubs could get some salary cap relief but can't see it working to be honest. Pies will want us to pay a fair chunk of McDonalds wage then throw in Phillips on top of that then we probably won't be in much of a better position salary cap wise.

As I’ve said before, the Pies have been looking at Tom for at least 5 weeks now, so they have at least been thinking about trading for him. I wouldn’t mind a trade of Tmac for Phillips, if it also meant we could bring Brown in, but it would all come down to how much we are prepared to pay of Tom’s salary. As others have said though, it looks like Smith is our first preference on the wing.

Third in line for me behind Smith and then Polec. we need to address the need for run.

Ideally, and it seems like a good chance, Smith nominates us and round 1 2021 we have a premiership wingman lining up for us

Would much rather Phillips than Smith or Polec. Has had roughly the same output and has age on his side. Even better if Phillips is the key to getting Tmac and some of his enormous salary out the door. Smith has 1 maybe 2 decent years left. If we cave and give him a 3rd year or a trigger for a 3rd we are seriously taking the mickey. A 35 year old running around...no thanks.  Only benefit I see in Smith is he comes for free.

If thats a role the club want filled than I'd think it silly if the club didnt enquire about Phillips. Just because players are becoming available now doesnt mean we just automatically pack it in for them because we owe to another player who hasnt even committed. Trade period isnt for another 3 weeks ! Plenty of time to put in some groundwork elsewhere.

Tom Phillips

6th in Pies B&F in 2018

7th in Pies B&F in 2019

Both years was finishing behind some pretty good players in Grundy, Pendlebury, Treloar and Adams.

injuries this year and shorter quarters didn’t help when he played as he has great endurance and often runs out games better than most. Dees actually need players that don’t stop in the last 2-3 minutes of a quarter.

He fits our needs and comes probably at a reasonable price.  All the better if the Filthy Pies don’t rate him. I was going to offer Future 2021 2nd round but they can have pick 63 this year if they like.

Just another reminder

He would walk in to our best 22 on the wing

Phillips is a great player, the fact he has been in Coll best 22 for the bast 4+ years shows something.

He should be our target ahead of Smith and Polec.  He is the right age, can still work on weak areas of his game and is the outside run and carry we need.

Should shoot straight to the top of our recruitment list.

His disposal is good, not great and not bad.

One guy is 28 and struggled to get on the park the last two years due to form and injury in a team that's failed to play finals.

The other is 24 and a regular 22 whose had consistent top 10 finishes in the B&F of a team who has got to the 2nd week or better of the last two finals series.

Any decent wingmen would, but that's not really the question.

The questions are:
1. Does his limited skills and contested ability see those B+F results start to slide over the new few years - he wouldn't be the only hard running type of player to have peaked by 23 (see T. Bugg or A.N-B).

2. Is Isaac Smith (for free) better for a couple of years for free whilst we work on a long term replacement who we can draft with the pick we won't have to give up for Phillips

I'm not so sure the Pies would be so keen to move Phillips on if they thought he had 100 solid games left in him. Chris Mayne's their other wingmen and he's just about done, they could find a way to hold on to the salary if they really wanted to. 2 years of Isaac Smith and allocate the draft resources towards finding longer term solutions - in particular guys who can kick would be my preferred result.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
