The case for it:

1. Essendon haven't won a final in 14 years, the only way a key staffer like Dodoro keeps his job with that record is to keep having reasons why they haven't gone up the ladder. First it was the end of the Sheedy era, then the problem was Matty Knights. Then it was the supplement saga. With a new coach who they want to give some time and space to reset the game plan and list the best way to save everyones job is to have one big clean out. They won't be completely hopeless next year with or without Merrett, the list isn't that bad, so you go backwards for a year but you've got 5 first rounders in 2 years to show for it. For all his trade shenanigans Dodoro has always drafted well enough to hang in there.

2. If Merrett leaves in free agency he'll have to get a bigger contract than say Brad Crouch will get this year. And if Brad Crouch is only getting an end of first round pick then maybe Merrett's in line for similar. You have to assume we'd offer up our future first to start negotiations.

I like Merrett but I don't love him. There's not enough smoke just yet to make me think we're all that keen and I think Essendon would certainly rather keep him. But it's an interesting one.

I understand point one but you're off the mark in point 2.

Merrett is a much better prospect than Crouch & will get a contract that gives EFC a first round selection.

Anyone got any news on Zerrett. Obviously his mate Saad is already out the door. Melky Hibbo time to earn your pay checks - get him over

I think Hibberd has earned his, has been a warrior for us

No real substance but SEN reporting Merrett more likely now to stay at the hangar.

Most likely Tim Watson trying to steady the ship.

I agree, was making the case for it rather than what I think will happen. But he does have to play out the year unhappy in a poor side and run the risk of getting hurt. A lot of the talk recently is that Daniher doesn't get first round compo on his Brisbane contract. It's looking more like Essendon are happy to roll the dice and keep Merrett but they'll surely have to consider any serious offers that come for him.

Lol, does that mean they're conceding they'll lose Treloar?

Surely if Collingwood let’s Treloar  go it’s for a key forward. Merrett has better skills but not necessarily an overall upgrade on Treloar.

Looks like the Pies are trying to push Treloar and De Goey out the door and going to try and bring in Merrett, Cameron and or McDonald/Jetta.

interesting by the. they invested so much to get Treloar to the club, strange to push him out.

How can they fit him in their cap??

That is never the question for these big clubs that get players. It just happens.
FWIW, I don’t think the Bombers can afford to lose him and will throw the kitchen sink at him, to try and show that they are ok. It will all work well for his bank account.

By all accounts he has a lucrative 5 year contract, at which time he will be 32.  In 2018 and this year had serious hamstring issues.  At his level they don't sign contracts based on games played so gets paid whether injured or playing.  Guess the Pies think they aren't going to get value for money over that 5 years.  Can use it better on other players.  Clinical by them but may become the norm with reduced sal caps.

I'm glad he is calling them out on it.  It seems they wanted him to happily go to GCS so they could play the 'be with family' card to justify the trade to members.  Gutsy young man to take on the pies and Eddy machine.  Good on him.

Probably knows Essendon won’t let him go while under contract. And fair enough, I would do the same if Oliver or Trac wanted out. You take your chances on your best players and hope to turn them around.

Sometimes you've got to pick your mark...

Last year was a no brainer to trade Daniher and Oratzio...dumb move to keep 2 injury prone players who didn't want to be there.

This year with a new broom, a player that does get on the ground and performs at a consistently high level...best to try turn him around unless you get a crazy, crazy deal offered.

He's at their club and they're in the box seat. Over to you EFC.

Oh without a doubt you need to pick your battles. Daniher was an idiotic move. He was always leaving. Now their bargaining chips are nothing.
If Oliver said “guys I hate this place I’m leaving now or next year, make a decision” I would of course trade him while under contract and get max value. But if your best players are even a 2% chance of being swayed and are still giving you their best on the field, you gotta back yourself.

We are in the queue port-adelaide-eye-bombers-star-merrett

"Melbourne are another club to have shown strong interest in Merrett, who would add run and ball use to a formidable ball-winning midfield".

If we get him we must be planning to trade some reasonable players out to make sal cap space s I doubt the players that are likely to not have contracts renewed this year, will free up anywhere near enough $ after their replacements are recruited.  Not to mention our talent need to be rewarded.  Will be an interesting trade period.

We would be looking very attractive to him and any other FA's looking for success.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
