Disappointing, would have been brilliant for us on off the backline.  I do wonder if Carlton are leaving themselves open for a raid of their younger talent with the amount they are spending on flankers.

This surely must become an issue for them soon.

But also, how are the Blues able to pay all these players under the salary cap?
Jack Martin was the 6th highest paid player in the league this year, on more than Bontempelli, Dangerfield, Gawn, Neale etc. How can they afford to pay Saad 700k+ and Williams 800k+. It doesn't add up...

Martin and saad are line coaches?

Im wondering the exact same thing. When Kelly goes on the market next year, dont surprised with a Blues 5 year 1M dollar offer.

We missed a golden oppurtunity last year with Jack Martin....and theyve done us again with Saad. Deep pockets and lots of brown paper bags down there at carlton. imo he was exactly what we needed.

They've done exceptionally well.

Yeah, very disappointing that we didn't appear to get heavily involved, he would have really made a difference to our list and obviously was there to be convinced.

I do think we need to test their capacity to retain their players now. Curnow OOC in 2023 I believe, but McKay comes out of contract next year, let's get into him now. Petrevski-Seton the other one I'd try and persuade.

They drastically front-end Martin's salary for year 1 so no-one else would take him in the preseason draft last year.  I believe next year it drops back to average levels.

So at face value that saving pays for either Saad or Williams.  Also, Simpson and Kreuzer have retired  so that probably pays for the other.

What is unclear is how they are going to fit them into the much lower sal cap.

Carltons strategy must be load up on Half Backs as their midfield is so poor they know they will lose all the centre clearances.

You seriously have to wonder where the cap room is coming from, even with Simpson and Kreuz retiring.

I think they must be about to dump a couple of players to make room.

Jack SOS looks gone.

Casboult might be another.

I'm confused. I know many of you have strong opinions but what is it about Carlton that gets players to the club? Simply $$$? Unbelievably, they've performed worse than us over the past decade or so. And why do we complain about salaries when they just dish out whatever to whoever? Have they backed themselves into a corner? Something seems off.

In this case it's definitely a massive over the top contract offer.

Martin was only on a big 1st year contract to stop other teams drafting him.  The wage drops significantly in year 2.

Williams is definitely not on 800+

I reckon they're massively overspending on guys who aren't core members of the team. If they were spending big and bringing in the likes of Patrick Cripps, sure, but they're spending massive dollars on half forwards and half backs. They are still yet to address their midfield.

What happens when Charlie Curnow makes it back (if he does)? Where do they find the money to pay him? How do they find the money to fit in another midfielder or two that they desperately need?

Carlton have a good spine, but their midfield is weak and unless they vastly improve this, they won't win a flag.

This makes no sense. They have a great young spine as you say, so they don’t need to invest there, hence they’re investing in other areas. Jones/Weitering/Cripps/Curnow/McKay is a top 6 spine. They just have a lot of ordinary players still getting a game. Adding Williams and Saad improves then immediately...

Disagree. If we've got Swiss cheese holes, they've got a hole right down the middle of a sandwich. Their midfield is essentially one player.

With Danniher and Saad going it sounds like it will be an 'exciting' trade period.

But we all kow Dodo will stall until the last day wasting everyones time.

Good times ahead

My whole point was that they have an ordinary midfield. As we say on Demonland, midfields win premierships, not spines.

I'm just trying to work out when we'll be able to get a deal done for Merrett. ;)

Agree he’s what we needed but If its with a Jack Martin or Mitch McGovern size deal they can have him.

One reason they have so much cap space is their next generation of mids - Dow, O'Brien, Stocker and even Kennedy and Setterfield haven't come on nearly as well as predicted.

Williams should play as a full time midfielder and Martin should rotate in.

Depth and trying to find a way to bring in any future recruits might be an issue.

Carlton have a good spine, but their midfield is weak and unless they vastly improve this, they won't win a flag.

Williams tore Collingwood apart in a prelim this time a year ago, he would've been a full time midfielder at any club other than GWS.  Walsh is ready to move on ball - though they do need a wing replacement. For some odd reason Teague was more focussed on using Walsh's run to help the teams outside game rather than just releasing him as an inside beast. Cripps, Walsh, Williams is a great start to a midfield.

If Martin wants to be his best he'll rotate in. Saad they plan to use in the Kade Simpson sweeper role. If he gets 20 kicks a game up the ground rather than deep he's a core part of the team.

There's always enough cash to pay everyone. My concern for the Blues would be they've quickly accelerated their time line adding a pair of 26 year olds and their depth is shoddy.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
