So if we win our last two games, we would need one of:

- Bulldogs losing to one of Hawks or Freo

- Collingwood losing to both Suns and Port

- Saints losing to GWS

None of these looks highly likely but at the same time, any are possible. In fact, the longest odds would probably be on us winning both our games.

Sometimes it is the manner that you win/lose.  West Coast showed huge character, as did St Kilda

If we lost playing like Saints last night it would easily be the best we played all year....with tough opposotion.

Glass half full or half empty!  Could see both, we have wide range of opinions on this site. I think after watching the last few weeks i would take a spirited performance.  Saints crashed in all night and looked to be over the line with 7 minutes to go.  Nic Nat, Kelly and Darling all stood up and lifted at the end.  Great leadership. For a crippled team they still have many leaders and show real heart.  Makes me envious!

everything was in the aints' favour and they still couldn't get the job done

like ever other team ranked 6-13, including us, they're pretenders in 2020

West Coasts on-field leadership got them over the line last night. Half their team out injured, down with 7 minutes to go, top 4 on the line. Naitanui, Gaff, Hurn, Sheperd, Darling, Kennedy all stood up in key moments and dragged them to victory. Good clubs have leadership all across the ground, and you look at those names it's leaders on each line.

It's exactly what we're missing - leadership across the club. Board, coaches, players. We brought Lever and May across for their leadership as much as their playing ability, but on-field leadership outside the backline is seriously lacking. The forward line lacks decent players, let alone leaders capable of standing up, inspiring, and directing others.

Until we fix our leadership issues, it's irrelevant if we make finals or not.

Not necessarily related but Giants have shown their ruthless streak by dropping thir skipper for tomorrow night for form reasons. That mindset really worries me  for the game outcome.

Totally agree with all of the above. I could not have been more impressed by West Coast last night, they looked gone for all money. particularly with McGovern not down back and the saints looking to have a big advantage wit their big forwards.

But i'd also add, that in all honesty the real issue for the dees is that for the majority of the last 50 years few of our teams have had enough talent across the board. Sure we have had our share of talented players, as we do now, but we simply don't bat deep enough.

For me that is the real answer to the question about our so called cultural issues and our lack of leadership.

All the Eagles players you correctly point out stood up in the last part of that game are guns. To that list of players who stood up when needed i'd add Ryan, Kelly, Barass and Oscar Allen (pick 21 in 2017 - makes me weep).

That is 10 players who stood up - every one of them super talented, and at least 5 of them A grade stars. All of that with McGovern on the bench and another 5 or so top shelf players to come back in to the side.

Compare that to us. Really we have three A graders and maybe another 7 above average players talent wise. Sadly of that 10, almost all are terrible kicks (who in our team kicks that goal by Kelly in the last quarter?) And then we drop off a cliff talent wise. That 'aint going to get it done. 

I heard Buckenara (a brilliant footballer, one of my all time favorites) talk about how successful the Hawks were in his era. He didn't mention culture or leadership (though those things were part of it no doubt) - he talked about the insanely talented list.

Agree Bin, but over the journey how many of our players have not got the very best out of themselves over seasons?

I would say quite a lot. The MFC just don’t raise the bar high enough, results don’t lie. 
I think our current list has a lot of talent, but it is not getting the best out of itself.

For those still believing in Santa aka MFC making the finals I think we should be supporting the Cats thus increasing the chance of Richmond being fifth and playing them in Qld in the first final as against Eagles in Perth

Players like Martin are a protected species. Caught red hot holding the ball ... play on. And the commentators say nothing.

We could do well having our palyers watch these games so they can learn.
