I don't think we can afford him?

But why not roll the dice and at least inquire?

We definitely need a good quality tall forward desperately.

Sadly if Jeremy Cameron was going to leave GWS it would probably be to Collingwood.

very much doubt they can afford him with signing up grundy to a big deal, and the likes of moore, de goey, mihocek, and daicos all out of contract this year

No point targeting key forwards until we can get the players that can deliver the ball.  We could have Tony Lockett in our forward line and he would struggle

While I understand where you are coming from, I disagree with this. We have two major problems.  A weak forward line and a poorly skilled midfield. Fixing the skill of midfield is not going to be easy, as our best players are also our biggest culprits. And they cannot play anywhere else.

I think a gun forward and another wingman are the players we should target this off season. Cameron, Daniher, Mihocek, Gunston, Brown, Breust and De Goey are all players we should be trying to get.

We should definitely consider but I doubt we can meet his wage demands.

with all due to respect to Neitz and Lyon, he'd be our best full forward since Fred Fanning.

hes not a patch on Neita .not even sure where he plays- obviously somewhere between the centre and deep forward .

Always hard to compare players from different eras, but statistically speaking Cameron has him covered.

Neitz was a club champion and one of my all time faves, but if we're being honest he was always a rung or two below the best forwards in the league (Carey, Lloyd, Riewoldt etc). Cameron is having a down year, but he's just about the best forward in the comp when he's in form. His record is phenomenal.

He would do more to improve our side than just about any other player in the league IMO. Doubt we can afford him, but definitely worth a crack.

So he can stand there take his 1.2mil per season with arms in the air frustrated by the players missing him by 3-5m or kicking to him when it is 3 on 1.  Spend that money on players who can hit a forward, we can kick enough goals if we can hit a target.  It is chicken and egg spend all that money on a forward but get the same delivery which severely effects his performance or improve the delivery first.  For that price tag we want to make sure we aren't going to flush it down the toilet and I think with current delivery it will be wasted money.

I also think Weiderman can be a 50-60 goal a year forward if we could kick to him properly

Doc, I agree that Cameron at $1.2m might not be the best value recruit - even though he is a free agent. But I still think a gun forward is something we lack and that, from a list management perspective, it will be the simplest way for us to improve. (We need to dangle a few lines out and see if we get any bites.) And Weideman will be a better player with another top player around him.

Our midfield needs to improve as well, but I think that needs to happen organically. Oliver, Viney, Brayshaw, Petracca, Harmes, Sparrow and Langdon collectively need to improve their disposal. But I don't think we have room in the rotation to add another recruit in the centre square.

Lose Viney, Jones and tmac and we might be in business

That is a very fair price, with the added bonus of getting a good forward.

Agree we need another forward, I would rather go to the draft to get one, let Jackson develop and have another developing getting ready for when Gawn is done and Jackson takes No1 ruck spot.

I don't think players mid 20 can improve their kicks, in fact if you don't have the correct motor skills by about 15 yo it is near on impossible to change.  They can improve decision making and composure with the ball which will help but I don't think they can get to the level we need.  Issue we have you can carry a few poor kickers we have an entire midfield of bad kicks.

I agree, it is highly preferable that any forward that we recruit compliments Jackson and Weideman. We also don't know if Petty (uncontracted) will play again or if TMac (unlikely) can rediscover form. Of the list I gave, Gunston, Breust or De Goey would seem to be the best fits for us - adding class and maintaining forward pressure. And, I also agree that we should definitely be looking to add mid and small forwards in the draft.

However, Cameron is one of the top 25 players in the game. If we have any chance to get him, we should take it IMO.

I reckon the importance of midfield delivery for a forward's success is massively overblown. In his second season, Cameron kicked 62 goals in a side that won 1 game all year (against us, because of course it was). To name a few, Tom Lynch, Fevola, Pavlich, Richardson and Jack Riewoldt all spent a fair portion of their careers in rubbish teams and kicked plenty of goals.

Not saying that we shouldn't be looking at skilled mids, but the best forwards kick goals no matter who is delivering it to them.

GWS played pagans paddock for Cameron, he basically had the entire 50m arc to himself.  Can't compare old school forwards to today, they basically played one on one or at worse had 1 player drop back in the hole.  Also they had ownership of the forward 50m arc everyone else out.

I'm not against bringing in a key forward, I am against bringing in one that will take 1mil+ out of your cap, we just aren't ready for that at this time

Nailed it, with our key forward stocks looking pretty thin we should be having a big crack at all of them (maybe not De Goey)

Weed and Jackson are the 2 key forwards for us in 2021. Pickett works on his composure, and Fritsch improves his kicking and that’s 35 more goals in 2021. I like Spargo if he puts his hand up and says he’s your bread and butter hard worker - and he proves it every week.

Petracca moves through their too.

We need outside midfield class to deliver the ball. That’s where our money needs to go.

Agree

Daniher took unders from Essendon when he last signed... said to be around $600-650k when he could have demanded $800k at least.

Assuming Daniher leaves Bombers would still have to find another half million a year.

Just shows how hard it is to accommodate these huge salaries unless you are prepared to mortgage the club on  a Franklin type deal.

Believe it or not I can see GWS letting Cameron go and then keeping all the other players they want.

His output this year has been poor.

He is on a fortune.

They have Himmelberg, Finlayson and Riccardi and maybe others.

I know it sounds stupid, but they want to keep a lot of players, who are going to cost plenty. Williams, Taranto and Kelly for starters.

PS. I actually posted this before the previous post came up on screen.

Edited by Redleg

I reckon they will let him go, just depends who is going to want to spend up and take him?

I’d rather keep Whitfield, Taranto, Williams and Kelly over Cameron

Geelong has been mentioned but would their ground suit him?

It is interesting to see who is after Cameron.

The Pies could do with a KPF but wouldn't seem to have the cap space with Moore, De Goey and Mihocek out of contract and Grundy on a monster deal.

The Tigers, Dockers, PA and Blues don't need a KPF.

The Bombers are trying to keep Daniher but could target him if he leaves.

The Dogs are getting a young gun KPF in the draft and have Naughton and Bruce is on big money.

The Crows, NM and Hawks are rebuilding and would not be that attractive to Cameron.

The Eagles might want a replacement for Kennedy, but surely they haven't got the cap space with Nic Nat, McGovern and Kelly on big money.

I can't believe the Cats have the cap room either.

The Saints seem to be locked in to building around King and probably want to focus on the midfield.

The Swans, Lions, GCS and Dees would be the most likely external bidders.

he's one of the highest paid players in the competition and wants to remain so

his output and body language in games this year has been really poor

no doubt he's a gun

i'm guessing he'll go to the peptides, the filth, or the cats cos they don't seem to operate salary caps like other sides

He looks like a guy who's made the decision to leave and is going through the motions. i wouldn't be surprised if a team has offered him a massive deal, Norf potentially could have offered him a boat load of cash

Please let us get this guy.    We would all like to see a flag before we die.

He won't get you a flag.

I smell the Cats in a big way on this.

Viney/Crouch and Cameron and they would see all their problems solved in one hit.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
