I'm not sold on him.

Strikes me as a Bayley Fritsch, third tall type forward.  We've obviously already got one of those.

I think I'd rather see us look to recruit another wing type player to complement Ed Langdon first.

Height isn't really all that relevant. Melksham plays above his height as a strong mark when given space. Finlayson doesn't play to his height.

Melksham 3.3 marks, Finlayson 2.5
Melksham 1.1 M Inside 50, Finlayson 1.3

You're right that Melk is probably 35-70 on the heat maps, I checked on the AFL App. Finlayson a fair bit around that, plus more around the ground from rucking, and a little more deeper. Jeremy Cameron playing so much as a lead up CHF means Finlayson was often deeper but his best position is surely using his running and skills up the ground, he's not a contested marker. 0.7 contested marks per game. Weid, Fritsch and Jackson are more dangerous deep, if we added another tall to that mix it would be a guy who gets up to the wings.

He likes to play for free kicks and he likes doing silly things like patting blokes on the head or giving them a push and shove.

I don't think players like that do anything more than eventually grate on their team mates. We had Tommy Bugg who was an all time pest like that and it meant little when he couldn't get a kick.

If you're Toby Greene it's great, but he backs it up with play that lifts a side.

Here's some comparative stats:

Goals - Melksham 0.8, Finlayson 1.3
Inside 50s - Melksham 3.4, Finlayson 2.0
Contested Marks - Melksham 0.3, Finlayson 0.8
Marks Inside 50- Melksham 0.7, FInlayson 1.1
Clearances - Melksham 1.9, Finlayson 0.6
Hitouts - Melksham 0.1, Finlayson 1.0

That to me doesn't paint a picture of two players who play the same roles/way.

Melksham does his best work from 50-70m out, Finlayson likes it plonked on his head 10-20m out.

What are your sources telling you m8, are we a chance?

Petty has shown some glimpses, but he's a difficult one to predict

The sources say "if we score more than them we win". They also say you should post things already reported in the media as some kind of inside scoop. #ETwiththelatenews #IsETSandraSully #WhatDoesHeKnow #NotMuch

Gee who would have thought when you follow someone around making smart alec comments about their posts they'd get annoyed?

Let's both chill out with that stuff hey?

The money can be spent elsewhere, we have ample forward targets, best spent on areas of need i.e outside mid clean foot skills with speed/goal kicking small forward with speed.

I know it might sound ridiculous but how about Jared Polec from the Roos, they can pay half his contract.

They want to off load him. Could play on the other wing has a tank, speed and clean kicking skills.

If he passes the no DH policy which may be an issue...

Then he is what we need.

There's no DH filter rjay?   Could really use one here in Melbourne right about now

We definitely need another forward.  I think Finlayson would compliment our forwards perfectly.

Petty.

Correct - happy to invest in Petty.

reliable kicking, pace and endurance - (the holy trinity??) is what we/all clubs need.

Exactly.

I see it that we either do one of two things.

Go after a CHF (and Petty plays as CHB)
Go after a CHB (and Petty plays as CHF)

I would rather Petty in the forward line and go after a CHB.

I see the key backs and forwards like this.

FF - Weid
CHF - Petty
FB - May
CHB - ?? (this should temporarily be T.Mac instead of O.Mac)

Jackson to rotate through Ruck/Forward from the bench (clearly we like the Jackson/Weid combo very much).
Lever is third tall / intercept defender - same as what Hore is (it's a real shame these two are the same age, would've been nice to have another intercept defender in the 20 age bracket).

Oscar is a FB and cannot play as a CHB. Until May is done with his career, he has no solidified spot in the team.

A lot of faith in what people are deeming out (taller) forward combination for the next few years.

Weid - obviously finally finding some continuity but still largely unproven. On the right path to being our key forward.

Jackson - 19 year old who has looked great around the ground with huge upside but very raw and forward craft questionable and possibly needs a lot of work. Too early to tell.

Petty - Injury interrupted career, played all of his junior footy down back (?) and most of his time at Melbourne as a key back. Was swung forward in some desperation and performed well but very small sample size. If he can get his body right would love to see him push for the spot but definitely no sure thing.

Fritsch - Our most consistent forward. Plays well is space and a great 3rd marking option. Finds space, superb kicking etc. etc. tick

Melksham - Obviously an important player and key for the next two seasons but at 29 he might be limited in coming years.

Brown - I think this was a really smart signing for our forward depth. Provides a great contest. Mobile and proven goal kicker. But probably only another season in him.

Tmac - Combination of limited movement and ability with his confidence down also. Can't see him finding his previous best and is just a depth forward currently.

So I guess what I'm saying is relying on such a predominantly unproven group concerns me especially when our main problem is finding avenues to score as a group. I actually think our small forward depth is looking healthy (Kozzy, Spargo, Hannan, ANB, Bedford, Hunt, Bennel). I do love the upside of our young talls but I also don't see the harm in adding to our depth if we can afford it. It's an area we need some continuity.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
