TMac named as 1st ruck. We'll see if that eventuates. If it does, I can't see it working. If it doesn't, I can't see it working. Either way, I can't see it working. IMO, should have been Preuss. I'm going to be crossing my fingers for a late change.

Pickett/Hannan for ANB/Viney makes sense. Rivers for Lockhart does as well. I'm disappointed for Lockhart, thought he was doing well.

I'd love Spargo to give us more than Bennell did vs Adelaide, but I'm sure this is as much about fitness/fresh legs as anything. Pressure's on Spargo to hold his spot for the Collingwood game.

Tomlinson is named on the wing, interestingly.

If Preuss isn't in Adelaide, which is being reported, then I don't think we have anyone but Tom to bring in.  We will just have to manage as best we can in the ruck and around the ground.  I wonder if they give Jackson more responsibility in the ruck?

I like the rest of the ins though.  Hannan, Pickett and Spargo to freshen up the forward line, while Lockhart looked pretty battered after the last game so I like the addition of Rivers.

Still backing us in for the win here.  We might be missing a few, but so are North.  Even with Max out I would expect our midfield to beat theirs.

Edit - just saw Preuss is an emergency, so he must be a chance to play!

It all comes down to fitness of Tmac and whether we try and swing him forward. I'm worried about his selection, but I don't think we should have played Preuss.

The rest seems logical to me.

I personally hope Spargo stays the hell away from the ball. If I see him lead and call for the ball and our players kick long to him down the line, I will be physically ill. He cannot mark overhead, but continues to present as a leading option. He is not particularly fast, so I don’t exactly know what role he should play, but a marking target he is not!

The only positive with T Mac in is it gives us options through the ruck - you could have Tom, Jackson, Tomlinson and Weid potentially pinch hitting through there if they don't make a late change and get Preuss in there.

At the very least it makes us a little unpredictable.

Firstly if Preuss is fit (and I’m not sure he is) then I have no idea why we have him on our list.

Secondly I’m not entirely sure what they are going to play Tom as. Will he be our secondary ruck to Jackson? Our FF and push Weids into the ruck? If so I think that would be a mistake as Weids has got form under his belt as being our key forward.

Finally Spargo, where do I start? I hope the coaches are giving him one hell of a pep talk because his round one showing was up there as the worst I’ve seen of any Melbourne player. They should be giving him a KPI target to hit with tackles being the number one thing.

Also playing Gawn against the Crows = STUPID!!!!

I wonder how Preuss is taking this. Basically came to the club knowing he’d be the number two man and is now number 3 at best.

I’m genuinely shocked at Spargo. I hope he goes well and proves me wrong but he’s shown bugger all over the last season and a half. I really don’t know what he brings.

Where the bloody hell is Hunt? At least he has pace and can take a grab.

Good changes. Bennell was not up to standard last week. Pruess needs to improve his around the ground efforts to be considered

some good pace in Hannan and Kozzi and Spargo can be the link man

less inside mids also a good thing

Pretty uninspiring changes. I consider 4 of the 5 a downgrade, a couple of huge ones as well. Oh selection last week has caused an issue this week. Presumably Jackson plays first ruck which might impact our forward line chemistry as well.

the decision not to rest Max on Wednesday was a shocker.

The more I think about it, the more I reckon we're too top heavy here by bringing in McDonald.

Pretty much agree with this, particularly your last point, but I think we need less guys competing for half back too. It means someone like Jones will probably play wing time and I don't know how many times that's proved to be a terrible idea.

That's on top of the fact I think we have too many big guys.

Possibly, but then McDonald seems like a direct replacement for Max, and the other four inclusions aren't tall players.  So we've gone like for like there.  I'd say McDonald and Jackson will do the majority of the ruck work, with Weid to stay forward.  It's not really any different to last week.

Don't like the look of forward line and the team in general. Jones at HBF and Tomlinson on the wing is not good. We shall see but if I was North I would be confident.

Yeah, Tom absolutely seems like a replacement for Max, but who are Tomlinson, Lever and May going to play on? I don't think we need the extra tall. We've done this with selection before and sides smash us on the outside.

Why is Preuss on the list for? Tommy very lucky. How can they play Spargo he's proven time and time again that he is a dud? Happy to see Hannan back and Kossie and Rivers are good inclusions. Prefer to see Preuss and Jordon than Spargo and Tommy.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
