Elwood 3184 1,365 Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Looking for a scenario whereby we play a final against Collingwood which means they finish 6th and we finish 7th. That entails GWS beating St Kilda, us beating Essendon and Freo beating the Bulldogs AND us making up the percentage differential with the Saints. Unlikely, but ... 1 Quote
Youngwilliam 381 Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Wife jumped off Freo when Lachie Neale left. After 20 years she is fully Melbourne so she knew what she was in for. Now with the superstitions going around, does this mean Freo is going to be a good ex and show my wife what she is missing out on or screw both of us by losing to the dogs because it is an emotional wreck? 1 Quote

Why should the Eagles be getting a home final for finishing 5th, when potentially teams that finish above (Richmond, Geelong) could potentially be the “home” team in a prelim playing Brisbane in Brisbane? Why are the AFL making this so hard, with quarantine periods, allowing one club to fly between states just for the sake of a final? Why should the Eagles get that privilege when they finish 5th in a year where there is no normal? 1 Quote

Lucifers Hero 40,720 Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 I'm more confident of beating Ess than I was a few days ago. If Daniher goes, which seems likely, they will get a 1st round pick immediately after their natural pick. On current ladder position that is pick 6 and 7. If they beat us and end up 11th they will have pick 8 and 9. That differential could be enough to make them tank. 1 Quote

They have developed the 'possession/control' game plan ala Eagles, Cats that works very well vs 'chaos/play on' teams. Freo have been in Cairns for a few weeks so are more acclimatised to the weather. Next round will be nerve ranking, especially if we beat Ess and we have to sit around and wait for the Freo/WBD. Deja vu to 2017; hopefully with a better result. If we make finals we can do some damage in the early rounds by playing the way we played last night. This is our only option. Even if saints lose we wont make enough % beating the dons. Firstly games are shorter but more to the point, who in the team is going to kick a bag? Once again either poor prep or mental weakness let us lose to a team with only 3 wins for the season. Not just once when finals were up for grabs for us but we did it again in the match after that. You could think....alright then the team had a bad night out...it happens. But to then serve up another bowl of steaming 4r6p the next game...well.. Its almost preferable we lose to Essendon so we can say: Oh well we are just not that good. Because if we beat the dons it shows we are a good side that just didnt bother to show up to bottom teams twice in a row. Hmmmmmm. Quote
spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Dons have nothing to play for. But we don’t do well in games that we should win. Pies in 2017 still haunts me. That was a shocker. Freo and Swans this year. It’s ridiculous. If we had won either game, then we’d have our destiny in our own hands. Quote

Benevolently 'big brotherish' of Hoges to do that for us. Whilst there is more on the MFC plate and match outcomes complicating the run to the final eight, I feel attached to Hoges in this regard, just like when he wore the Red 'n Blue. He'd be a dream acquisition for us if it was possible for it to happen, now that so much water under the bridge of a complicated life has seemingly sailed away. I still wish him every success - he was a great and with in-depth encouragement, could return to that group of elite acquisitions. Onyer, Hoges! 1 Quote

It's beautiful isn't it - how this beloved club allows us to have the full gamut of the human experience, not just year after year, not just round after round annually, not even quarter after quarter, but 6 minute intervals within quarters. I for one wouldn't change that, for the consistent boooooring certainty that you would get with being, I dunno, a WCE, Geelong or Richmond supporter. 2 1 1 Quote
The Great Pretender 480 Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 (edited) While Collingwood are to be congratulated on making the finals, its worth noting how remarkably smooth their run of games in the second half of the season has been. After losing to Freo at Optus Stadium in Round 9, they’re played only one game away from the Gabba and that was v Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval in Round 11. This week they play Port Adelaide at ... (drum roll) ... the Gabba. That’s one plane trip in all of that time. They also had a bye during the last frenzy period. With the exception of a soft trip to play the bottom side in Adelaide, it was a complete joy for them to not have much traveling in the second half of the season and no games in the heat and humidity of FNQ or NT. Well done Eddie! Edited September 15, 2020 by The Great Pretender 2 Quote
