Seeing down the bottom the phone number for Beyond Blue you have to think he took his own life. So sad, only a few years older than me and with so much of life still ahead of him. ?

Yeah it seems that way, Pates.
I’m also 38, quite jarring news.

Had a good mate for many years. Travelled internationally with him a few times. Dated sisters. Lived at his joint for months after I was repatriated from working overseas.

Had a blue with him after he got drunk and said some things that I took great offence to. Never spoke to him again.

Last year out of the blue I had a missed message from him. "Call f**k ya" he said, in a voice that sounded almost desperate. I ignored it for a few days, then tried to call but no answer.

Found out a few months back that he had taken his own life just after he called me.

Never give up on the people you care about, as you might be the one who saves them. When people are desperate they will almost always reach out to someone. Make sure you are not the selfish bastard who doesn't reach back.

R.I.P Shane. Thoughts to your family and friends.

So sad, The a Project is the only program I have seen where the issue was broached. Something like a 25% increase in suicides since covid started. Which means the increase is more people dying than from covid itself

it should be talked about more

we don’t know what the hell is really going on. But the People in ICU are real.
And many are not recovering, that is also being kept quiet...

But i agree on the suicide situation, this Lockdown cannot last too long, the fuse will blow.

So sad for two footballing families, both the Tucks and the Abletts who have already had their share of family tragedies in recient years.

My recollection of Shane as a footballer is of him being a down to earth battler of a player that forged a pretty decient AFL career through hard work and resilience as opposed to being 'naturally gifted' so to speak.

Sky News regularly mention this. It's awful.

Michael Tuck is meant to be a cracking bloke. My father knows him and speaks so highly of him. Terrible news for the family and everyone that knows them.

All you young dudes thinking you've reached the end of life  please never give your enemies the satisfaction .

Things are never that bad.

Policeman son says suicides on the up - had to attend a number recently, mostly by “train accidents”. Horrible for first responders, I fear for my son’s sanity as well.

Like the Casino, many people don’t come out. It is not reported by the media.
i used to know a Metropolitan Train Driver. Part of his training was how to deal with the “train accident”

So so sad, I really feel for his family. The heart ache, pain, frustration, the un answered questions, the I should have done this or that they all eat at me everyday since my brother in law took his life nearly three years ago. Not too mention the pain of seeing your sister and niece go through hell.

The level of suicide in Australia is appalling and way more needs to be done to help prevent it.

The horrors they must see...     I wonder what  most police would do at  the moment if they pulled over someone with depression who was out driving just to get out of the house and hit the open road to feel some sanity.

If I was a cop there is not a chance in hell Id fine them.  Has the Victorian government made an exception for these people or must they stay locked inside depressed and ready to top themselves like so many others already have?

The news media are in a difficult position because there is very high level medical evidence that publicising suicide increases the suicide rate.

Whilst still living down in Canterbury in Kent (UK) I volunteered as a listener with The Samaritans for three years. Some interesting things I remember from that time were that only around 10% of the callers / visitors were people genuinely suffering from suicidal thoughts or depression. Many were prank callers if you can believe it. Also, I found that the people who had made the decision themselves to call us usually fared far better that those that had been prompted by family or friends to do so. Maybe because they were in a headspace where they knew they needed help and were comfortable enough to seek it.

Psychotherapy can also be a game changer in regards to depression but again the results I think can be much better when the person seeking help understands that they will be the one doing most of the work and not the person they're paying to listen to them. For anyone at their lowest ebb during this time complete openness can be really helpful but also be when someone can be at their most vulnerable to any sort of mild criticism. Coming out the other end though can be character building though as it can really help people understand the steps and triggers that led them to those low points and also make it far easier to articulate to themselves and others what they are feeling. Particularly for males I think that is a great tool to have in our mental health kit.

Long term depression can be as painful and debilitating as any physical illness and I came to the view that in most cases someone would have to be at the very end of their mental and emotional endurance to actually take their own life and that it's certainly not a cowardly act.

Anyway, that's my two bobs worth on the subject.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
