The signs were there I thought. They need time in the side together to build the team synergy.

I thought Tom had 1-2 moment's in each game, but I thought Weid looked more threatening and physical today. 

I do think Weid is better deep and TMac is better between the arcs.

Just home from the game. A very small crowd but it had a big voice! I have lost mine. 

A special mention to Umpire 20, probably the second best for the Suns after Rankine. His calls on Langdon were what i will call politely "surprising". From my perspective the holding the ball calls were just impossible to understand. 

The Suns had a handful of unbelievable goals and were gifted a couple. We were the better side on the night. What you probably didn't see on TV was how hard Langdon worked to get to position and create options that were often not taken. 

Max and viney were immense. Just brilliant being there with a crowd that was just Dees supporters. A big thank you to the club.

The umps were soft but our players have to be smarter.

Ellis loves that kind of rubbish. So Langdon - who I think easily had the better of him all night as a runner - has to avoid the little shove in the back.

And Kossie needs to be smarter too. Kossie's pressure was really good all game and he had a number of efforts that saved our bacon. Plus at least 2 goal assists. But to give away a down field as well as a couple of ordinary turnovers soured his night.

Rankine is exciting, can’t deny that. Jetta and co were worried around him and made mistakes. He’s a talent that actually almost won the game for them. 

But he was given an armchair ride in his debut, as stated he dropped the ball for his first, should’ve been pinged HTB but got a high tackle he ducked into, and that inexplicable free against Oliver that the club should follow up. 

Watching the Dees is never what you would call relaxing. Tonight was typical - messy, messy messy. Some good signs though and good selections. Still make dumb mistakes - the cat dived for cover on a number of occasions when I yelled at the tv. 
I think Rankine will find it a lot harder when teams work out they have to stay goal side of him at stoppages - hello Nev!

Was very little in it but Clarry swung an arm at him, that's always going to be a free. 

The biggest armchair ride Rankine got was Max tapping it right to him. Our mids were in awful position at that stoppage and Jetta just couldn't go with the kid.

Thankfully he can't kick a set shot.

Good win I thought. Under massive pressure and Suns are actually quite decent. 

TMac injury was really challenging for us.  Structure looked better just a shame we didn’t have 2 key position forwards all night. Weed did well as the only tall. 

Bennell is class and looked good tonight. We are desperate for his kicking skills. 

They kicked some flukey goals. Pleased they missed a few gettable ones. 

Also if you pay a down field free and the ball goes OOB the ball has to come all the way back. Umpires missed that one with the Rankine to Ellis goal in the 3rd. 

Commentators do struggle when they just commentate off the TV feed.  Not sure why Gary gets so many Melbourne games. I’d rather he didn’t. 

Finally that ground is a cow paddock and not sure how it will hold up with all the extra traffic. Hope it doesn’t rain too much. 

 

Would have been a great game as a neutral supporter, i had to stand up for the last 3 minutes.

I really wish the Salam back line experiment ends and we put him as a high forward, loved seeing him up and ground and his creativity.

Love having the ball in Bennell and Hannan’s hands.

The two forward option liked great before Tmac lost his eye, would still like Brown in as well to make a 3.  

Skills slightly improved still MUCH work to be done.

umpiring was frustrating as always, their whistles clearly don’t work in our forward 50 for HTB or throws and blatantly dropping the ball.

The suns goals were pretty rubbish early and we controlled the ball and tempo better with Tom hitting the wings, but it didn't lead to much on the scoreboard and the ball walked out of our forward line. In the second quarter Weid split some packs and we played on out of those contested situations to hit up inside 50 targets.

There's still plenty of work to do to get two talls up and firing, plus make sure Fritsch and Melk are finding the ball enough to contribute and getting the defensive pressure consistently sorted.

A good summary DS.  If T-Mac is out next week (who knows at this point but if he is) i'd be bringing Brown in as his replacement.

I'd go for Jones ahead of Melksham if his body is up to it as well.  If Jones is still NQR maybe Bedford ahead of Melk and give him a trial run for a week or two and see where he's at.

Surely a combo of Hannan (better playing mostly through HF though / occasionally on a wing), Fritta and/or Bennell Earl?  One or more of those three can also rotate through Langdon's wing when resting to assist.  Even Harmes at a pinch?

In all seriousness, that was more like the way we played in 2018; not good composure and a lot more chaos but eventually weight of numbers prevailed.

Is this a long-term winning strategy? No, but it's better than losing, especially when we are likely to gift the number one pick to North Melbourne.

It is so much better to be able to go to a game and be there to see what is going on. We miss so much watching it on TV with the limited camera shots and the waffling from the commentators. Also, am so over seeing replays of things when the game is still going, or not seeing replays of things we missed.

I think Lockhart was his man for the first and let him go to the front whilst he kept back position of the pack. The mids were awful for the 3rd goal but Nev still couldn't get near him or block his run. And otherwise Nev just didn't look up to the tempo of the game. The old legs just don't go as well as they use to. Maybe he gets one more go, maybe he can reinvent himself as a pressure forward like other small defenders have?

For ‘throwing an arm’ that didn’t connect after Clarry was roughed up by the kid once the ball had crossed the line? Really? You are joking. Go back and watch it. Complete and utter joke

Good to win, thought we deserved it. Haven't fully turned the corner yet but step in the right direction. Our connection with the forwards that has seemed so elusive was a bit better. Where would we be without Max Gawn right now he just sets the tone time and time again. Petracca started in not the best fashion but I felt he really worked his way into the game and that clutch kick was just the ticket. I seem to recall a similar kick last year against the Suns. Oliver's game better than last week and Viney really came home with a wet sail in the second half.

Hannan has been good since coming back into the side.. his forward pressure and contest work was a key to us winning tonight. 

Ah Dees. Just when I think I’m out, you reel me back in. 

Great to get a win, but not what you’d call an overly dominant display. Suns missed plenty of opportunities.

Viney & Gawn showed excellent leadership (with the former playing out of his skin).

Hannan is becoming indispensable.

And the best game Ed Langdon has played in the red and blue.

Harmes worked some great centre clearances in the 2nd half and has great composure in the tight passages.

Loving Hibberd’s return to form. Many thought he’d run out of gas  Great to see that proven wrong  

AVB getting acclimatised, and gaining in confidence.

Harley made further progress, which we love to see. Love that purposeful, relaxed style of his 

Omac did his job, looks in good knick, and should get regular games this year if he can keep it up. And I agree with Binman that he should kick out. May basically kicks to a contest in the left flank every time. And while on May, he seemed kinda panicked at times and made some terrible choices. Not his usual character  

Trac had one he’d rather forget (except the last bit), but can’t be faulted for his effort and intensity.

Pickett learning all the more and deserving of a place out there with the big buggers. Just needs to get himself in the right spots, which takes experience  

Lever and Oliver did a few useful things from the waist up, but their kicking is an ongoing concern. Particularly Lever.

Nev was up against some wildly confident youth, and his age showed a little. 

Lockhart didn’t get amongst it much. We may see Rivers come in for him. 

Weid should get games pumped into him now. He needs to become our principal target going into forward 50. 

Fritter did some nice things but undid his good work with some butchered kicks. Seems a bit off compared to last year. Should come good. 

Brayshaw was ok at times, but was a bit of a spectator out there tonight. 

Melksham needs a rest. 

BOG - Viney. 

I’ve been enjoying the last several Akermanis-free seasons, but that ride is possibly over with the introduction of Rankine.
