Where should we play the Grand Final

Given it won't be the MCG my fan based vote is for Adelaide or Perth. (Query over Perth being too hot if the GF is played late October.)

My feeling is that the AFL will make a corporate decision and play it at the SCG. (More dollars and greater exposure in a key market.)

Cannot see Brisbane figuring in the outcome.

Too logical for the AFL

They will be seeing it as a money making activity. Need time to sell all the corporate packages.

Your comment does raise where the lead up finals might be played. Hard to see Melbourne having 20k plus crowds this year.

Presumably that’s why we’re at Giants Stadium and not the higher capacity SCG - lower break-even attendance point. There is likely going to be finals played at neutral venues with low crowds no matter what, so there’s not a real lot of benefit in moving away from the standard home team model I wouldn’t have thought, eg flying two teams that have been in QLD to Adelaide for a final would be pointless.

NSW assuming no break out could go to Phase 4 which would allow 20k or thereabouts....

Also remember the bulldozing NRL will be asking for unlimited crowds

In Step 4, states and territories may allow all of these large venues to admit larger crowds, provided:

  • There is no evidence of sustained community transmission
  • The event is seated-access only, with ticketing
  • They maintain physical distancing
    • Allocate seats to enable appropriate physical distance (e.g. 1.5m) between individuals or groups do not know each other.
    • People who know each other can sit together. They must be separated from other groups or people with physical distancing (e.g. 1.5m).
  • They put all other required public health measures in place
  • They address and manage all public health risks

If we make it, Blundstone Arena please.

Have we ever won in Hobart? But at least you can watch the yachts on the Derwent when we go through our GF meltdown.
PS just noticed that WA delayed phase 5 restrictions.

Under Phase 5 you can fill the stadium

Edit: didn’t realise capacity of Giants Stadium was only 24,000. Home state of top side then - so either Optus, Adelaide Oval, SCG or Gabba.

Hard to argue that one but what if it's a Victorian team? Does it then go to the next top interstate team?

Nope - home hub city (eg Sydney for MFC - not that it will be us).

Are we staying in Sydney though? I thought teams would be moving around? Or do we move to other states to play a block of games but our home hub is Sydney?

Your guess is as good as mine. I suspect games in Queensland and South Australia might be possible.

GF location will be influenced by revenues, national exposure, permitted crowds and fan satisfaction not necessarily in that order.

My take is that the AFL would love it to be in Sydney. Their worry would be the backlash from the SA and WA footballing organisations (media, fans, clubs etc). Adelaide FC not being a likely participant makes it a little easier as Port carries far less influence.

They won't make the decision for about six weeks. Also they will be looking for stadium deals and State kickbacks as part of the decision.

Home club advantages will play no part in the decision.

As ideal as that would be, i feel it would potentially open up a pandoras box of then having a build up of pressure to play subsequent GF's at the home ground of the highest qualified team.

I would argue for the GF to be played at the largest stadium in a neutral state. With the rest of the country opening up, at least supporters would be able to travel and attend the GF.

Anywhere, except Kardinia Park!

Couldn't bear it if those smug cretins got the GF.

Just watch Scott lie low and then up the ante if it looks like they will make the GF.  They will say no fans allowed anyway (in Vic) so why not at their Home Ground.

Shame SA have slammed the door shut as Adelaide Oval would be a nice spectacle.

I can imagine a Chinese only vaccine with Gil striking a deal to move all finals clubs to a Wuhan hub and get the vaccine. Icing on the 2020 cake

Luckily we'll miss finals and not experience the side effects

We won't feature so I don't really care.

Just make it whatever stadium has the largest capacity. Perth?

I agree. It’s not “we”... it’s where will they play the AFL grand final.

Perth.

Yes football mad.

60,000 top class facilities.

Play at 5/30pm and screen into eastern states at 7/30 pm Saturday night.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
