First thought is, will we see Weideman again?

Second is, (and I don't recall the other team selections where he was positioned vs where he lined up) with Trac at Full forward, resting in the midfield, could be quite interesting.

Spargo ???????

From that lot, I'd like to see OMac, Hunt, Lockhart and Brown in the final 22.

Poor old Weideman clearly still struggling.

I hope for Rivers, Hunt, Brown and Lockhart as the bench, meaning Brown takes vandenBerg's spot.

Weed is so gone - yeah I get Brown is maybe a bit more mature but Weed could be our future?

Like most I'm amazed he's not even named....

Must of hit Goodwins car at training or something I dunno

on the bench i'd be tempted to to jackson - avb - hunt - lockhart

o mac must be a shot to play on one of riewoldt or lynch too, i'd guess

i dunno, it's all just a bit...uninspiring

no viney vs stack re-match either, as the latter has been dropped; they also omitted ross plus astbury is injured too

carnage for our (former) opponents too; gawn would've been going up against a first-gamer or possibly aliir

Bennell, seriously could the club stop the BS and tell us whats up,? on one calf he is ahead of: Spargo, AVB, Brown, Melk, and Hannan. That said I think Petracca is a much stronger unit that Fritsch, a'la Dunstall, and like the idea of him at FF.

Yes, we will.

I don't think until the team is ready;  and also,  his body is bigger, so I reckon they want to encourage him to be a lot more physical now.  I suspect this is a lot do with it and also I wouldn't play him until we are in-form.

If Weid is not injured, then it is starting to get very concerning he has not been considered for the first third of the season.

Spargo ahead of Bennell?

You've [censored] lost the plot Goodwin.

And ahead of Jones and ANB, too.

Did he play well in the scratch match?

we need to give him a run - far out even if we name him then he doesn't play is a better sight than seeing Spargo

Jacko will be great but we need a tall forward right now

Good thing we re-signed him last year.

Definitely shouldn’t have traded him last year when his value was still relatively high like I suggested.

Don't know.

But its by far one of the most uninspiring team selection in a long time.

I see Sydney Stack has asked to be ommitted, so be doesnt have to face Viney

I noticed that as well, had been looking for part 2, but I think Sydney has been living off that for a while and playing like crud in the meantime, not a surprise he's dropped.

Bennell isn't fully fit. Not complicated.

Again, Weide is rucking at lower level,  and Brown is a high half-forward,  not so much a contested mark against the big fellas.   Maybe a contested mark against midfielders.?

So I think we are playing small,  because most opponents are playing small.

I don't think,  I would play OMac this week if only Lynch and Riewoldt are the tall forwards for the Tigers.

I reckon Smith can take Riewoldt,  and Lever can cover them off.

The Tiges smalls again will need to be kept under a blanket.

Spargo won't play.

It will be Brown or Jackson in for possibly AVB.

Goodwin spoke of continuity, so I can see us making just the one change and adding a little extra height to the side.  That's fine with me.

We can whinge about Spargo coming in all we like (even though he won't play), but Jones and Jetta were both way out of form and Bennell could barely get through 50% of a game while avoiding as much contact as possible.  I know that's to be expected after so long out of the game, but they clearly want him to get some of that confidence back before they give him another dip at AFL level.

Changes are fine by me as we're potentially adding in a tall player, which is what we need.

But they played him round 1. When you take the field you are deemed fit.

Don't give me that crock of [censored] bing.

Even a half fit Bennell is better then someone like Spargo.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
