He's up there with Flower, Schwarta and Ronald Dale - entirely different players but our best big four.

Mentioned on the Gus & Gawny podcast Oliver is just 21 votes away from getting the most coaches votes ever in a season. Will pass 2017 Dusty with most votes if he can do it.

Yes I hope he does very well in the Downlow

Bump!

You would assume Bontempeli will not get any votes (or very very few) from last nights match.

I'm assuming that

Boak would get 10 votes and the other major votes shared between Wines, perhaps Hunter and Macrae from the Dogs...Bontempeli for a max of 4 votes??

With Bontempeli trailing by 3 - Oliver would need to poll a min of 0 votes and a max of 1 votes to sew up the AFLCA tonight.

So, he probably has won the AFLCA.

But, does it translate to the Brownlow? And does that even matter?

A bonefide superstar, forgotten or not.

No and no. Would that the Coaches Votes replaced the Brownlow. They’re the best table of who really deserves accolades, better than the media (possessions obsessed) and the umps (visibility focussed). They could be held in secret til season’s end, and would be much more suspenseful, with the broader spread of votes per game.

I think Oliver as a player can be characterised as being fairly similar to Michael Voss.  Asides from being a fiery red head, like Voss, he's a tough, no frills grunt player, who provides near endless drive for their team, but doesn't necessarily features that heavily in the game highlights reel.  Recognised by anyone who knows anything about footy as an out an out superstar.

I'm not sure that Clarry has quite nailed the leadership thing to the same extent as Voss just yet, but perhaps that's the next step in his evolution.  If you listen to Steven May's recent SEN interview, he credits Clarry as putting his hand up in preseason as making a commitment to become the best player he can for the team, so I think he is well on the way in this regards as well.

Are you sure Oliver leads by 3? I didn't think they published the last two rounds? I don't think Clarry would have polled very highly against Adelaide.

Agree.  The Brownlow has become tarnished over the years by some really shocking outcomes.  Doesn't deserve to be the penultimate players award.

Substituting the umpires votes for the coaches ones would bring back some much needed credibility.

Not yet still has flaws when he learns that he has half second or so to lower the eyes and kicks to advantage and not just throw it on the boot, also stops running back into traffic, he needs to get to a point where he damages a side score wise but I agree this kid could be something special right up there with them.

Maybe it does deserve to be the penultimate players award 🙂

Ollie Wines has had two excellent weeks so he could easily overtake Oliver in the Coaches Award.  Bontempelli has had two poor weeks so unlikely to win.  They may also cost him the Brownlow.

I reckon Oliver needs to get at least 8 votes tonight to win it as he probably didn't get any last week.  Shame he didn't kick any of those goals.

If he is to win an individual award i want it to be the Norm Smith. Means we'll in all likelihood have won the flag with him leading the charge. A flag and a Norm Smith would be fitting reward for him given his contribution for the last few years

Last night I reckon Wines name was only mentioned about 10 times by the commentators and when he kicked that goal he was suddenly BOG!!!

Thought Boak  was easily the best on ground for impact and 4 quarter value plus his clutch goals.

Rozee all class and agsin goals and as usual Gray was pivotal and a prime mover in the fight back

Obviously need to watch game again for Wines role. Just shows how if you butcher the ball in front of goals and handballs are just off slightly you need to have your best mids on top supplying that ball downfield and converting as well.

BTW still good  to get Dogs out of Top4 as I have rated them ( until last night) as our main opponent but now reckon Port are potentially being given a dream run at home and may even play the Final there although not first choice at this moment.

Lets just win tonight Dees!!

I only knew mate cause of a link you sent a few weeks ago saying Oliver needed 21 votes in the last 3 weeks to get the most coaches votes ever. So I've been following it closely. He's not going to get most ever but hopefully he wins it.

I just want him to be better when he kicks for goals. It would be nice to see him bob up & kick 2 or 3 a game like other mids can do.

Sorry, but what other mids kick 2 or 3 goals a game?

The excuse/explanation is that he is knackered by the time he gets to shoot for goal. His brand is high octane and it is remarkable that he is so durable that he rarely misses games.

No it's more his action and routine is what his problem is same as Gawn kicking on an arc does not help.

Dusty has 19 goals 7 points from 16 games and an overall from 2010 has kicked 291and 195 points and an average of 1.2 goals a game  Olivier has 7 goals 16  and overall from 2016 has kicked 36 goals and 37 points and an average .30 a game thats where he needs to aim for.

no question, but that is still not 2 or 3 goals a game as was being requested by dees189227. There are not too many forwards averaging 2-3 goals a game, let alone mids.

Yes fair point but I think his main point ( I might be wrong ) is having our mids be in more active in scoring shots every game.

Petracca has certainly been active in that department. He's kicked 24 goals this year and he could end up with over 30 if we go deep into the finals. He must be our first midfielder in many years who's kicked over 20 goals in a season.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
