Rivers looked like a young Guy McKenna.

Powerful.

I hope the fluffers on here will start to see that we have serious cultural/coaching problems. This is a pretty good list, and we still cant put away a lower ranked club while our supporters talk about flags.

We are MILES off.

How do we fix it faulty? Say we get rid of Goodwin, who replaces him? We'd want to make sure it's a home run and not another Neeld. Ross Lyon could be an option but do we risk a Malthouse at Carlton situation?

I think this is most infuriated I have ever been after a game of football. Definitely after a win, except for maybe Gold Coast last year and I think Brisbane circa 2016.

Thank you for reminding me of some of the positives from this game DZ. Rivers was fantastic. Trac showed he's ready to be a super-star of the competition. Oliver is close.

Goodwin/MFC nearly manufactured a scoreless half against the opposition. Does he get credit for that or just blame for our capitulation?

Where's all the ANB and Hunt haters tonight? I'm angry but i still love my football team. Go Dees!

Ah Brisbane 2016. Good times. This is definitely reminiscent of that one.

What a first quarter after 10? weeks off. Loved Tomlinson’s Joe the goose kick to Hunt For a goal. Rivers an absolute gem, looked like he’s already played 50 games. Jackson worked himself into the game nicely and Bennell pokes really composed with the ball and most importantly got through unscathed.

If the coaching group can’t work out how to wrestle the game back into our terms when we owned it for the first 1.5 quarters though, we’ve got an issue.

For what it's worth, I know some people lament him on here, but I would pick Weid before I picked Tmac, at least he gets involved in the play enough to warrant selection.

We desperately need a key forward who can take strong marks and kick goals... Brody Mihocek anyone??? He's out of contract, and playing for peanuts as a rookie at Collingwood. Straight swap Weideman (Eddie loves the Weidemans btw) for Mihocek and we'll be a far better side.

Why in the heck was Jetta playing on McGovern???

totally undersized down back and matchups all over the place, someone take control!

And to see Goodwin laughing and smiling after the game made my blood boil.
harden up Melbourne FFS!

With MacDonald playing so badly why did they not throw him back on to McGovern that would perhaps give him a chance to get into the game, as he was a total waste on the forward line. Having jettas speed and aggression on the forward line would not have hurt any more than McDonald contribution.

That's the trouble. when played permanent forward, he doesn't. Probably will get another chance after his curtain raiser form today, he'd want to take it.

I haven't read the whole threat (there is only so much whining one can take) but you shouldn't discount how good Pitonet was against Gawn in the 3 quarters post quarter time.

Maxs influence got us the lead in the 1st but Pitonet beat him for the rest of the game and almost stole a w for the blues. Pittonet took away our advantages and exposed our weaknesses

We Won. What's better than beating Carlton by a 100 points? Beating 'em by 1. :)

Who knows what the players have gone through to achieve that win. Well done boys. I for one and proud of you. Good to know when the game is tight you can win.

Looking forward to winning more of the same...

The difference was that is was two crap teams going at half pace. We showed we were capable today.

My observations:

Good:

  • We won and beat Carlton again!
  • 1st Quarter was like watching MFC of 2018.
  • Tracs game- without him we would have lost.
  • In the 1st Qtr, we lowered our eyes and found team mates in the forward line (i.e. we finally had the connection that was missing during 2019).
  • Rivers debut and Bennell getting through the game.

Bad:

  • Show boating in the 2nd Qtr, which killed our momentum.
  • Lack of pressure and lack of run and energy after half way through the 2nd Qtr.
  • Inability to take a mark in the forward line in the 2nd half, we kept breaking down at the half forward line.
  • Lack of forward line speed and crumbing ability.

Other:

  • Smith is not a backman and should be playing in the forward line. Oscar would have been better than Joel Smith today.
  • With the exception of Rivers and Salem we had little run out of the backline.
  • In the last Qtr, we played very conservatively and tried to save the game rather than win it.
  • We missed the run of Kozzie, Bedford and Lockhart.
  • Jones had no influence on the game and Harmes is being played out of position.

Yeah, that wasn't impressive.  They really took the foot off halfway through the second and it nearly cost them.  Once that hard contested pressure was removed Carlton was able to get their skillful players on the outside and started to move the ball through us.  They are soft as hell, but if you give them the time and space they have the ability to hurt you.  Hopefully the players learn from this and keep the pressure up for an entire match next time.

So how did our 3 key backs go tonight?

Ummh not good. Smith had a shocker, May made a couple of poor decisions he would regret and as for his kick outs, could you once look for an option to your right? You know just to keep them guessing. Why was Jetta on Mackay and Smith on Betts? Lever just not sure, you need to be at the ground to see the full value he is adding, it was not obvious on TV. And do we cut Salem some slack for his first game as his disposal at times was atrocious. Rivers was superb I thought.

This is going to be a weird season, at least these first few rounds anyway, so I’m just happy to bank a win tbh.

Can't believe players like ANB and Hunt getting a free pass here. They were non-existent after quarter time. 7 and 9 possessions, and most of those were in the first quarter. OK, not helped by disposal coming forward, but they were poor for most of the match.

Also, Jackson. He might as well not have played. He's a KPF/ruck, and took one mark? OK, young, OK great to blood him early, but there's a price to be paid, and we paid it. No accident that Pittonet and the other Carlton talls got on top. Also no accident that we then have to pull Petracca out of the middle to play deep forward to provide the target that Jackson didn't. The consequences of someone like Jackson going missing in action have a flow-on effect all through the team and the structure.

Same with Rivers. OK again, great to see him out there, for a first gamer he was a revelation. But he also made at least a couple of stupid mistakes that cost us majorly - the kind of thing that if O'Mac had done them, there'd be burnings at the stake. You can forgive his inexperience, but that doesn't make the cost of those mistakes go away.

I just don't know what people expect. You have players out there who are not performing/absent/making mistakes/missing, and you're all surprised that the other team managed to put together some kind of performance?

Im normally pretty optimistic and quick to see positives from a game we have played poorly in. I might have to give it some time because I have not felt this dispirited after a game for a long time. And we bloody won it.

The only four positives I can find now are:

Trac: we should try to not lose sight of good he was. He won us that game. Firstly by dominating the first half but most of all kicking our only goal of the second half. A brave kick from outside 50, ignoring the lead of hunt that he normally would have gone for and kicking for goal. That's what we need from him. Also loved the mark he took 30 out and that he kicked it gun barrel straight. He loved that bit too.

Rivers: hard to recall a better debut game for our club. Composed and good kicking skills. Showed up every one of his co defenders.

Omac: at least this week no one can unfairly blame him.

Covid 19: at least i didn't have to waste any money watching that game live.

Messiah complex.

When the players perform like stars for a quarter then take their foot off the gas once the pressure comes on, that's nothing to do with the coach. If you want to judge Goodwin, judge him on the first quarter - when everyone on-field was doing what they were supposed to do.

Agree. They absolutely should drop tmac and put weed in. He was terrible.

And of most concern is he looks unfit and over weight. How does one of our supposed leaders and most senior players come back out of shape.

And when he did why did they pick him?

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
