I believe WC never got out of second gear all day.  If there was going to be clutch moments Darling and Keneddy would of buried us.

Coulda woulda shoulda didn't.

It is going to be a tough selection to get right for this match. Almost a complete injury free list to select from, no match from to give guidance and limited match sim at training.

For the defenders I think that May, Lever, Omac, Jetta and Salem  are definitely to be named With Harmes to rotate through there and to possibly take up a tagging role on one of the Blues mids. Smith or Lockhart may be on the bench as cover defenders.

Midfield is pretty straight forward. Gawn leading the ruck with Viney, Oliver, Petracca and Brayshaw in some combination at his feet for center bounces. Harmes and Melksham to also be there at times or as required. Langdon and Tomlinson to spend almost all the game on the ground with Fritsch and Salem to roam through there at times.

Definates for me in the forwards are Tmac, Fritsch, Melksham, Pickett and Wiedeman, I would look to rest an inside mid in the forward line. Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw or Viney. All can kick goals there and rotating there may help to change up a tag.

Bench: As I said, either Smith or Lockhart to cover defenders. Whichever one misses will be very unlucky. Jones on the bench along with Neal-Bullen and Bennell. With Bennell I would want to be confident that he could spend 60%+ TOG and contribute either in the midfield or as a forward.

So, My team is:

B: Jetta, May, Lever
HB: Salem, OMac, Harmes
B: Langdon, Brayshaw, Tomlinson
HF: Melksham, Fritsch, Petracca
F: Wiedeman, T.McDonald, Pickett

FOL: Gawn, Oliver, Viney

IC: Jones, Neal-Bullen, Smith, Bennell

Sure, won the battle, lost the war. However I stick with the fact WC never got out of second gear. The game was at no stage on the line.

General soreness from doing what?

Was crushing it when he came back and a real standout in training. Happy he's resting up

Agree. However, it was effectively a dead rubber. Played after the season was postponed indefinitely. Players from both sides running at half rat pace, opponents chatting and laughing during the game, players not sure how or if the borders would be open to get home. Lots of people thought the season was over. Whilst the result was disappointing, only the brave or MFCSS sufferers would draw too many conclusions from this game.

Our inside 50 entry and connection with the forwards is what kills us most weeks. Fix that and we are much more likely to win. Get wins, gain momentum.

“Resting Up”....seriously? So out of 38 players he is the only one who has to be “rested” due to training load? I think you will find there is a bit more to the story than that

In: Jones Salem Bennell Weideman.

Out: Spargo Bedford Brown ANB

I really want to fit Vanders in there somehow.. I also think Bedford is stiff. I'd really like for him to build some synergy with Pickett. But some good experienced players are available and every game is a must win from here on.

The main thing is Goodwin said he was right to go.

From being an injury prone player? Might always be managing his knees.

I wanted to put Vanders in to Dazzle, just not sure they'll go with he and Bennell

Agreed, it would be extremely risky bringing both in when they’ve been on the long term injury list for so long. You’d have to imagine both will be on limited game time when they do return.

I don't think we did either...it was essentially a dead rubber as 'Moon' said above.

Jetta, May, Lever

Salem, Omac, Hibbard

Langdon, Viney, Tomlinson

Melksham, Tmac, Jones

Pickett, Weid, Fritch

Gawn, Oliver, Petracca

Int  Brayshaw, Harmes,, Bennell, ANB

Em Vanders, Smith, Lockart, Bedford

I'll be disappointed if Lockhart doesn't get a game. I like that he's being developed as a small defender and think he could be a good long term option for us in the backline. He offers good rebound run, tenacious tackling, decent kicking skills and is one of the few small defenders we have. With Jetta and Hibberd slowing down, Lockhart is the next in line but IMO is already superior to Hibberd. I'd be playing him and Jetta in the back pockets.

In 12 months time I'd love our backline to look something like:
Jetta May Lockhart
Salem Petty Lever

with Rivers on the interchange as the rotating option. That gives us two talls in May and Petty, a third tall type in Lever who can go intercept or lockdown, two medium with good rebound in Salem and Rivers, and two small to lockdown and rebound in Jetta and Lockhart.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.
