For the first time in probably a decade I can look at our team on paper and not think “slow”. That is exciting.
I sincerely hope Harmes plays on Cripps and not as a half back flanker, which makes no sense.

We have a clear advantage in the ruck. Their back line is not great but our forwardline hasn’t been in form since 1987 so that doesn’t mean much. Our back line will have their work cutout for them.

Where do we think Bennell will play? Half forward? Surely he doesn’t have the fitness to play wings for more than a few minutes.

A very interesting side. I just hope that we have the skills across the team to exploit our strengths.

Speed is all very well but if we cannot cut down the turnovers we will be in trouble.

That's my concern also. Clearly our forward entries had not changed at all in round 1, and now we're looking at Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney, Langdon & Hunt being among the main kicks going inside 50.

Fingers crossed Petracca, Melksham and Bennell get the ball plenty.

My take is we are better in both speed and net skill. My view is only OMac is the only clear better skill than other match ups.

Bennell v Bedford (Bennell Better Skill)

Rivers v Hibberd (Rivers Better Skill)

Jackson v Brown (Slight lean to Brown based on known)

Salem v Lockhart (Slight lean to Salem)

Omac v Smith (OMac better skill)

Jones V Spargo (Jones better)

Hunt v ANB (Draw)

Jones inside 50 kick is under rated in my opinion.

Anyone know if Hunt has been training with the forwards or the backs? Smith I know will be in defence

It’s ok if he didn’t train with the forwards, he can barrel it from the centre square?

He's an underrated kick in general IMO. Was rated as our best field kick by an intricate (and fair) ratings system in 2019.

If actually love to see Hunt go back to half back line. We forget how bloody damaging he was when he was in form.

Happy with the changes. Like most, surprised at Hunt but who doesn't love more speed. I assume he plays forward, where he's trained (?). Surprised by Lockhart and hope to see him back there soon.

Hope they smash 'em

I know the line up can mean little at time’s but Jones was named in defence, which doesn’t really track, I thought he’s been predominantly playing/training either as a mid or HFF. I also agree he is one that takes that split second pause to kick to advantage. Something that Viney, Oliver, and Brayshaw need to start doing again (they did it in 2018!).

My opinions on the matchups you have above are a little different.

Bennell v Bedford (Bennell more skillful but will he be able to run out the match?)

Rivers v Hibberd (No idea re River's skill level at AFL level in a match.)

Jackson v Brown (See Rivers above)

Salem v Lockhart (I would take Salem every day of the week)

Omac v Smith (OMac better skill - agree with this )

Jones V Spargo (Jones better - Agree with this)

Hunt v ANB (I have Hunt as a better set shot at goal but not a lot between them otherwise.)

Really looking forward to this game and seeing how this team gels. Looks strong on paper

My guess is Hunt also to be included if we change 7. We have a comeback story in Bennell, two debutants, why not include a player seemingly out of favour. One more surprise.

KUDOS!!! I saw the pic on the Dees website with Hunt cuddling (tackling) RIvers and I thought that is as close to rnd 2 Hunt will get.... big surpise but well done on Hunt getting back into the mix.

Interesting that we've gone with essentially 8 backs. Seems to indicate one of them may be involved in midfield rotations, especially as lever doesn't come off the ground.

Wing or half-forward as you say, rotating to the bench.  I think Hunt will play deep forward leading up, so Bennell can be used high forward.

TMc deep,  and unsure if Jackson deep, or half-forward.   Tomlinson could also play CHF,  or CHB.

A versatile lineup.

Am I the only one who thinks our fwd line looks iffy? Tmac and a first gamer as the only talls.. If we can't get the "connection" working then we're in trouble.

(now we'll go out and have the highest score of the round)

Not concerned at Marvel. May be iffy at the G. It will come down to how well can Jackson hold himself in a contest to bring the ball to ground.

Agree Rivers not known at level however this is why he has been brought in. Hibberd’ s execution (or lack there of)  has been for all to see over the last 12 months,

Sitting in on the Mahoney zoom meeting which is on right now (Gawn last night and Goodwin night before)

Just said Hunt will be playing forward.

Disappointed to see Lockhart out, but exciting selections none the less.

Best of luck to new demons Rivers, Jackson and Bennell!

Lockhart should be playing but that is the way it is.

I know the probably won't line up as on paper but I would have the side fairly different. Jones and Harmes at half back I think is silly. Jones forward flank and Harmes on Cripps. I would have Joel Smith at FF with jackson ( who I don't think is ready yet ) relieving in forward line. I would have hunt running off half back.

I like the approach. Some switch has been turned on among the coaches and selectors. Much prefer the adventourous approach than to have won this game game with some tried and mostly failed players and then come undone later. Just hope they get a block of games into Jackson, Pickett, Rivers and Bennell and keep the faith. Well done Goody, I have been critical in the past but well done.

It doesn't actually matter at all but I don't get why we keep naming Melksham as a starting onballer. Do we think we're tricking other teams or someting?

Think it was back in 2018 I remember Goody (or possibly one of the assistants) saying they don't bother much with positions for the team sheet, it's basically just a list of names to them.

  • AFLW REPORT: Gold Coast

The forecast said wind. The ladder said mismatch. The scoreboard said obliteration. Melbourne didn’t just beat Gold Coast — they dismantled them: 13.15 (93) to 0.6 (6). An 87-point obliteration, the Suns held goalless, and the Demons delivering their second-highest winning margin and third-highest score in AFLW history.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #28 Will Verrall

It was a tough ask for him to break through as a 199cm ruckman in the shadow of an all-time great in that position who is also the club captain. He had some good days at Casey but was unable to progress and was delisted at the end of the season.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #29 Tom Campbell

The 33-year-old Campbell has yet to play AFL football for Melbourne, but his Casey form has been strong and he has been retained as a ready-made ruck depth option who is widely regarded as someone who is excellent for the culture of the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #30 Harry Sharp

The Demons acquired an interesting player in Sharp, who narrowly missed securing a spot in the Lions’ premiership team last year. The 22-year-old medium forward played in the opening round this season and ended up with 18 senior games, although he was substituted in or out in for ten of those matches. He demonstrated glimpses of form, but ultimately ended the year on the margins of the team.

Worked his way back after a slow start and a further slump in form going into the midseason but became a solid contributor for the club in the latter half of 2025. Closing in on 300 goals for the club.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Let’s be honest, last week’s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper — second versus seventeenth — football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.
