I have no problem with people refraining from buying memberships because it's a difficult financial decision for them. Breaking it down into "two coffees per week" is not a fair way of looking at it - it's one of many weekly expenses and for some people those two coffees need to go towards a bill or another household expense instead.

I do, however, have a bit of a problem with people who have the money and can afford a membership but chose not to buy one because they want to make a statement or something like that.

I accept that doing this (i.e. making a statement by not buying a membership) is important for some people but IMO it is counterproductive and unhelpful.

The club wants us to commit to them but gives no transperency to the day to day goings on,such as injuries etc.Why is it so secretive about injuries e.g avb, smith and salem surely as a paid up member we have a right to know what goes on with the players and their well being.Buying a membership is like buying a car sight unseen

I guess I should get life insurance as well because that's only 1 cappuccino a week and join the gym because that's 2 cappuccinos a week. So what if it's a little spend to you? Not everyone has the same priorities. Everyone on here is a melbourne support, member or not and should he appreciated because my god when I look at every other club we need every little bit of support we can get.

Yes but it's monetary support that keeps the Club alive and strong!

This is the year to get on board, Demons raging hot favourites to win the flag, can just see big Max holding up the cup in 2020!

Why?

After 50 plus years following the Demons, seeing two shocking GF’s in 88 & 2000, how ironic and MFCSS would it be for us to win in a lock out GF!

I would still absolutely take it!!

Wonder how many MCC members pay their dual membership promptly.

For the last few years (and this year no different) I just sign up a week or so before the season starts.

Already have my entry - so no real rush for me

That's fine. Each to their own.

My point is just withholding membership money based on performance is counter productive at best.

To be clear Ding; I wasn't having a go at people who don't commit to the Club by buying a membership.  I was suggesting that if you don't buy one you shouldn't winge and moan and bag the Club.

After following this club for 50 mostly garbage years with the last 20 odd as a member, then buying kids memberships and jumpers etc (that they were too embarrassed to wear outside of games mind you) etc having to watch even worse garbage I'll say and do what I like.
I call it credits in the forkin bank.

Every year I try to claim membership back on tax as a charity contribution and we laugh and laugh.
Well they do.

So you're saying you haven't bought a Membership this year? And don't intend to? Mind you that could turn out to be a saving the way the virus stuff is heading

I haven't bought a membership this year and will wait 4-5 games to make a decision.
If I like what I'm seeing I'll get one.
If I don't .... I won't.

Living a 7hr round trip away from the city I never get full value from my membership anyway so the corona thing isn't an issue for me.
What is an issue though is spending 7hrs in the car to watch garbage football.
With 3 disappointed kids in the car it makes for a loong forken journey.

It's not only the membership numbers that take the hit.
It's also bums on seats at games.
While watching at home at least if they're playing like spuds I can leave the box and go do something more productive with my time.

So F what do you do ?

Come to the first rounds At the G and see the games then buy?

Or explain to your kids that you only go to sport if you win? Losing is not fir your development of character.

Di your kids play sport and if they lose you don't follow them?

I wonder how many years you have bought a seasons ticket? Last year following 2018 or the preceding years as we increased our wins linearly?

Bestnif luck as you wrestle with all these Dilemmas!!

Hopefully we have only a small % in this category.

PS I believe the Club has already committed enough in changes Dialogue and improvements to indicate a real attempt to rejoin our progress before last years setbacks.

And you can fork off with your physcobabble about developement of character.
My kids early lives have coincided with some of our darkest days
I've taken 'em to that many poor losing games it's not forken funny.
The club has the happy knack of not turning up when we do regardless of who we're playing.
I said to the young bloke one QB game, "What you reckon when the crowd gets loud."
"Yeah, but it's always the other teams" was his reply.
The final against Geelong was the 1st win my 12yr old daughter had seen live.
They are the only 3 Melbourne supporters at their school and cop plenty and now hardly give 2 sheets about football.

You seriously want the club to confide in the public details of injuries, recovery times and illnesses? Why? So the opposition can plan better how to set up against us, who is likely to play and how our players might be hiding injuries?

I am without words to respond to such expectations.

I renewed a Membership last September so i will say whatever i like.
i am tired of People making excuses for this club. It is where it is because, over a very long period of time it has been run very badly.
and because excuses were made, continually it was allowed to continue.
now i think big changes have occurred over the summer, but until the season starts, nothing is proven.
if x amount of Members hold off until early in the season, good luck to them.
The Club is lucky to have any Members at all after the 2019 rubbish

Spot on - Essentially, to win a flag all aspects of the club must operate properly and I suspect that most members of long standing can point to stuff ups right across all areas of the MFC, from recruitment player selection and management through to the appointment of senior officials, sponsorship and the general administration of the club. Since 1964 there has been a long history of building up hope only to have it shattered and the only way to regain the trust of many supporters is through  success on the field.

Clubs love the jingoists - those modern day Benedict Arnolds -"My country( footy club) right or wrong but above all my country(club) or those supporters smitten by puppy love because they don't have to work overly hard for membership.

Now they don't like criticism and either ignore it, take umbrage or make an efffort to explain it away.  I also think the club has made a number of positive changes but the jury is still out and to stop criticising it is to surrender to mediorcrity. So more power to your arm. Apart from that I enjoy your posts you don't hold your punches.

Like father like ..... could so easily be my response.

But following a team is non negotiable and as you said the Geelong win trumps all.
Appesrs you didn't go to the QB games in 2016, 17 where the Dees outnumbered the Pies and 2018 where it was about 50:50.

You have solved your own point though that if you miss going (and 25% of Dees fans don't go like you) then we will be less vocal.

In fact since 2016-2018 the ratio at homes games has been more Dees.

I don't accept that point as every game vs interstate teams is 95% Dees.

Last year  after Round 7 our crowds dropped off but 2016/18 we were in the top half dozen in crowds and win a majority of games at the G

Seems as though you have not been lately.

Sniut the jumper wearing again it's your pick and choose example that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Nit bring proud of their team no matter what is not negotiable and again losing and winning are great character traits yo be taught.

A membership ticket is bought and no guarantees are given about success.

But a half empty approach will no doubt be negative and have an effect on attitudes in the learning years.

I am a 50 plus consecutive ticket holder despite living interstate fir the last 27 years!

And have attended up to 7/8 games in seasons recently since Roosy took over, and 2/3 prior each year.

PS My father was not a sportsman or real fan and  gave up during the shocking run during the late 60's and 70's.

I didn't nor my mother so here I am like you craving success but with a different attitude.!

No what i wrote was a general response

Our Club has been run poorly for so long, many Members and Supporters feel the need to excuse it.

There is some merit in this statement of poor Club management and operational intent and yes, it has been going on for some time in peaks and troughs. Stable and earnest intent is what is required implemented by experienced hands and minds. With luck and deeper reflection, it could mean that improved fortunes should come to the Club provided that Members and Supporters are heard and respected.

Actually, with the way things are heading due to the virus, I think all clubs are going to need memberships to keep the clubs solvent.

Being a member is not just about going to games and the club’s week by week performance, it is also about supporting the club through the bad times as well as the good. Yes, we’ve been bad for decades, but what’s been thrown at us this year is something that we’ve not had to deal with before, and is something that the club has no control over. I’m happy to continue my son’s and my own membership during this time.

Does this explain the belief by Scomo in the Covid 19 problem cos its explained by experts who agree 100%,

but that Climate change is only supported by 95% of those that know.

Jeff K...I know, I know he's a donkey, but anyway...Jeff K warning the Covid 19 crisis means a 10% cut to Hawthorn's revenue, and that's before the attendances are taken into account. Our club's going to hurt.

From afl.com: Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett has called on fans to get behind the team with the coronavirus having a huge impact on the club's financial situation."In going through our revenue, line by line, given the perception that the virus has already created, the situation is looking grim," Kennett wrote in a letter to club supporters.
"The very best scenario is that our bottom line might be hit by about 10 per cent of budgeted revenue over this football year. This is before the AFL informs us of any curtailing of the AFL season, so clearly this is serious."
