New Role for Harmes

Demonland

Recommended Posts

Not sure I understand this one. His standout games have all been when he is led to the ball.  I just feel we have other options to try in this rebounding HB role. Would prefer him in a more regular midfield rotation - taking some defensive pressure off Oliver/Trac/Brayshaw and allowing all three of them to rest forward more regularly (well, Trac and Oliver at least).

You need to add Viney to the mix of inside mids TJ6.  I expect that's the reason that Harmes is being tried at HB.  I reckon he has the attributes to make a decent fist of it, but obviously, only time will tell.

Goody has come a long way since Lewis/Jones on the MCG wings.

Good move Goodwin.  Harmes' leap and hands are underrated.  Will do well in the forward half.

Do you mean their forward half? Never sure what you mean tiger.

Agree. Just woke up one morning and thought 'heck why don't I play harmsey at hb?'

Sheesh.

A great spot for him.

Good in the air so can impact aerial contests.

Prepared  to play roles assigned to him.

His best footy has been as a shut down tagger so defensively minded and can be sit on a dangerous medium forward if required.

Excellent tackle and a  generally accurate long kick.

Good move.

Just because he plays off HB doesn’t mean he also doesn’t rotate through the middle.  The way they push the defence so high means he will also find himself on the ball many times.  His ability to hit a contest and deliver well to a team mate is exactly what we need and spreads our midfield wider and deeper.  I like Lockhart back there, too.  Our back six will be a formidable unit:  Jetta, May, Lockhart, Lever, Harmes, Oscar (or other, don’t hate me ).  Hibberd has some work to do, but at his best also makes this a better group.  Having Harmes own a resting midfielder from the opposition (ie Dusty) is a good move.

Harmsey will perform well whatever roll he is given. Has tagged the best players  when needed and has outpointed them many times. He has become a well round footballer who reads the play well. Off halfback he will run and carry and set us up,

He can run hard tackle as he did in the finals with 20 of the best he is solid as and most of all he has time on his side.

He learns quick. Another string to his bow.

If Petracca and Brayshaw are going to play more this year on ball rather than forward and wing respectively, then someone gets pushed out of the midfield group. From the limited game play we've seen (or read about on Demonland), it looks like Sparrow is expected to play midfield minutues, too.

However, I seem to recall Harmes playing HBF previously when the club was trying to find his best position. It didn't seem to work then, although Harmes is a much better player now. I hope it works, but if it doesn't I'm happy knowing he can slot straight back into a midfield role.

And presumably Salem, too? (although I don't know what a 'sonar' roles is. Did you mean 'similar'?)

Yes Salem too. Complete forgot him.

Jeez it is going to be hard to crack a position in the back six.

This is exactly what we want, trying to fit everyone in. Personally, I like the move of Harmes to HB. He’s become Mr Reliable, if need be shove him in the guts when an oppo mid is running riot.

He's shown he can be a decent decision maker and 1:1 defender, so I think he can play a role. What I like most about it is that we have someone down there who can win it in the contest, I think we've been let down in that area.

If the ball comes in, and we're not intercepting, then we've got to be able to win it on the ground and get it back out cleanly.

Don't mind it to be be honest.

Half back flanks. The one spot we have covered in spades... I'd almost have rathered they move him forward. Put selection pressure on the ANB type defensive high half forward role. But I have to admit his marking for his size should really help him slot in as an intercept rebounder.

Wonder if we'll see as many don't argues from him coming out of the backline

Gee a coach trying a player in a different position which will most likely be beneficial to the team and getting knocked for doing so, nothing changes much in the world does it.

Nothing much changes in the world does it.

For the record I think it is a move worth trying but I can understand the thinking of others who don't.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
