There are some truly horrific comments on this thread.

If this sentence makes you cringe a little, then perhaps it's time for a bit of a re-think:

"Hi Nathan, please to meet you - gee, I hope you never play another game, you below average potato."

I agree, love the guy & deserves some respect, no wonder our supporters are treated with contempt from other clubs

He’s been ok the last couple of weeks, has slowed down a fair bit & hope his form warrants selection for the rest of the season, if not he should be dropped like any other player

2021 is a bridge to far

Harsh.

The bloke deserves a little more respect than that.

While he needs to continue to play in a manner that is fitting of a spot in the side, I'd love to see him get to 300 games this year, especially as that would mean we play finals to get him there.

Agree.

Everyone watches what clubs do in these situations, not least of all the players.

You give respect back for loyalty. That is what successful clubs do and that is part of building a strong culture.

If he gets there this year great, if not he is given the chance to get there next year. It wouldn't be on big money and a coaching role could  be part of it, if he got there and then retired, or stayed on to play at Casey and teach the younger players.

The guy is a MFC great and they are to be treasured, not p-ssed on.

I think he is becoming a scapegoat and that is unfair. The game has gone past him but he deserves to get the 300. I hope he does but it does seem unlikely.

No one deserves to get to 300 IMO.

I've been a long time critic of Jones, but he's actually starting to work into his role now and it'll be interesting to see if he can sustain it.

I'd keep him in for the moment, but he definitely can get lost in transition and I don't think this is an intelligence thing, I think it's a leg-speed thing.

It's not really worth going into anymore. The past is the past and I think we should focus on the present and the future.

You seem to be the one to move on if you still hold or keep  a grudge etc.agsinst Jonesy.

Didnt have to mention it at all.

Any human saying he doesn't deserve an equal  chance to get his 300 is really  salty and miserly.

The only reason I asked was because of your incredulous statement !!!

I don't like the title of this thread.

I've got a large enough history over 11 years of posting that would seem pretty hypocritical if I didn't mention it, hence my reference to it.

And no one deserves to make it to 300. I think you might be missing my point. Oliver is my favourite player by a long way, but he doesn't deserve to make it to 300 unless he warrants selection in 300 games. Surely, I shouldn't have to point that out.

When have I suggested Deserve means gifted????

Jonesy deserves an equal opportunity to Make the milestone bit not  favouritism.

He did well enough on Sat especially in the wet conditions and his strong body helped in the clinches a number of times plus his tackling was ferocious.

All is going well and maybe he can hit the scoreboard a bit this week.

Chunk has been a huge part of my Demon viewing over the past 10 years, and I have so much admiration for the way he plays and championed this club. But the elephant in the room is would you pick him to play at the detriment of the team?

It is clear to me, and was the case on Sat night, that his leg speed is increasingly an issue. He did well in a couple of instances with his experience to anticipate where his opponent was moving towards and made tackles; but I would expect the club to look closely at games like this weekends with a faster opposition (IMO) as to whether he’s the right fit.

its ok, no offence is intended.  'Broken' was Jones' comment about the captaincy: "I think physically I always felt like I was capable, (but) I think last year really broke me down mentally and come the end of the season I just had a lot to think about."

He looks a happy man now.

The word 'deserve' was what I was referencing in relation to a few posters now who have said he 'deserves' to play 300.

Hopefully he is enjoying what should/could/will probably be his last year of afl football.

I think you'd be in the minority there.

Maybe, maybe not. The bloke is a warrior and will understand if he warrants selection to get there or not. We have an opportunity to play a significant role in finals this year. Sentiment counts for nothing.

Jones has held his own since returning to the side and his game against Cwood  was more than serviceable however he is a touch slower and it shows that doesn't say that he cannot hold his place in the side. if performing.

To get to 300 he has to play every game and some finals, I would love him to make it to 300 for the loyalty he has shown and the love for the club.He could have walked away quite easily, he didn't.

The thing is that if he makes it fantastic however if not so be it. I love the guy for his loyalty to the to club and supporters.

To me he is a Champion person.

How did the least controversial Melbourne Demons footballer of all time become so controversial...

Fair enough.  Perhaps the current discussion needs a different title however.

That's my fault.  I didn't want to start a new thread so I chose the most recent available on Jones.  Maybe the mods can start a new thread or find a better one.  Or as you suggest they change the title.

My MFCSS antenna tells me this will end as cruelly as possible for the greatest stalwart of our club during its darkest era. Stranded on 299 games after another preliminary final's flop feels about par.

How could it be anything but...it's Shakespearean in its tragedy..and depending where you sit in the theatre , equally amusing.

Or 300 on the Premiership dais.

Imagine if we made this year's GF in Nathan Jones 300th game and won - there would be some poetic justice there.

I think that would cure MFCSS forever

This would be awesome, God I hope it happens.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
