Good that you recognise Dan is the chairman of the National cabinet. They may have built the islands to be closer to the port of Darwin which the federal coalition government has handed over to them.I find it even more amusing that governments cogratulate themselves and brag about the "free trade agreement" they broker with a controlled economy.

You really couldn't write better comedy than the rubbish our governments at all levels are presenting to us at the moment.

• MFC Facility with Pool / Gym / Offices (and the "Social Club / Function Centre")   - 3 stories high. Approx

As other's have said, I don't think they will realign the off-ramp sadly.

I would like more room. So we could have a museum for the Melbourne Football Club as well as a social club area. I also think the indoor hall is a great idea but could also be 3 storeys high to include  our swimming pool on the first floor as well as the gym.

Lastly, I was going to ask if there was enough room to squeeze in a MCG sized oval in that area? Perhaps the small hill can be gotten rid of and just have more trees? What if you had an MCG sized oval at the top across ways and the 2 soccer/rugby pitches below the oval  so there is more room? Obviously the walking paths would need to be changed as well as some of the trees but more trees could always be planted too?  Nevertheless, a really great mock-up design and I could imagine the buildings painted dark blue with red vees similar to what Richmond have at Punt Road with their jumper style buildings. We could also have a bronze statue(s) of Robbie Flower and/or David Neitz at the facilities.

I think a modern Social Club would be something along the lines of what Carlton have at their ground. They have a Cafe area that opens to the ground to watch  training. Anything beyond that would need to pay its own way in function bookings and not just rely on  drinkers after our home games.

would they need to consider retail outlets, office rentals,  cafe, bar, childcare, public gym and swimming pool, restaurant, apartments, hotel, a place for uber to land their flying contraptions etc.

part of me thinks they need to think outside the box. we will have no pokies soon enough

That's not the perception of the footy world,  and its more about our critical judgemental attitudes over the clubs,  and their supporters.  Not about the finances.

I have heard some Hooray Henry private schoolers among our supporters lording it over the Bulldogs in class terms which frankly gave me the sh&%s, but toothless Tiger supporters, drunken criminal Woodsmen, ratbag brawling Bombers supporters, snooty Hawks...I hear more of that from other clubs.

I reckon it would be great to have a cafe/pub/function area that overlooks the oval and perhaps the interior of the center for people to look into the fitness and training zones. Sort of a way of it being interactive with the fans.

I would really love it to be at Gosches paddock (and then rename it to Stynes Park), I just wonder if it too ambitious for a small zone.

It would need a car park to be a success, foot traffic there would be minimal wouldn't it?

Given it would only get decent foot traffic a couple of times per week (and almost zero over summer) there is no sense in having a bar/cafe/social club attached to any development. It's sounds nice and cosy, but imo would be a waste of money. Might be better to relocate the merch shop away from Brunton Ave, but even then it would be smarter to do 100% online, except for mobile shop or two outside the ground on match day and at club events, which we kind of do now, but poorly.

Exactly.  The MFC declined the offer to run the cafe in AAMI park when we first moved in because it was uneconomic.  No passing traffic no nearby housing or offices.  Nothing has changed.

Social clubs are a complete and utter relic of the 1950's.  It came from an age when there was little contact between people with a common interest.  Like the cafe, it would be empty for 99% of the time available.  The club needs to spend its money on FOOTBALL not superfluous white elephants.

unlike most, i dont feel like the facilities need to be near the MCG. i know after games i would head over for a pint, but that would be about it for me, as i dont live in the city

IMO with no pokie revenue that, whatever they build should have some sort of way to make money attached to it. even if it was a sales room/ yard for jaguar to sell their wares, attached to sponsorship money somehow. 

i like the Jim Stynes name for whatever we build tho. Wouldnt it be good to see the " Jim Stynes Wing" on the electronic boards on the southern stand at the G, David Neitz behind the goals etc at home games

It is becoming more and more common in the AFL for clubs to move away from cities and 'spiritual homes' in order to find space.

Six months ago, I didn't love the idea of Casey, but, as we all know, a lot can change in six months.

GFC taught us that governments will put money into projects that are ready to go and get people on the tools as quickly as possible... Perhaps instead of viewing diving into a Casey Fields development as a rushed decision, we see it as an opportunity to grab stimulus funding for a growth corridor amongst marginal seats.

(whilst also throwing our weight behind the Cranbourne bypass)

It is a colossal amount of space with virtually identical dimensions to the MCG, neighbouring running track, swimming pool across the road, plenty of additional ovals...

Three story admin, gym and 2/3 lane pool at car park F next to AAMI. Resize and resurface Goschs oval to MCG size. Use grass area between for additional training, such as warm ups, rehab, sprints. Where would the money come from? Does community engagement need to be a factor in funding? How can this be addressed?

Casey already has ovals, pool, running track. Does it need better gym and indoor hanger? I'm not sure as I haven't been there. Would be keen to hear from posters that know the facilities.

But should that area be earmarked for sports and development, it's possible that a post COVID state govt would look at community projects that promote health and engagement for locals. No reason why it can't be available for the public when not used by MFC 

A compact Gosches facility for in-season. Spacious Casey for preseason, bye weeks and when needed during the season.

should we rely solely on the govt for cash to build? we might be waiting for ever.

potential sponsors that front end the $ to get the project off the ground. ( i know nothing on how sponsorship works btw) we build a facility that generates income, they get front of jumper exposure for x amount of years, signage and space to sell their wares within the facilities. (possibly within the CBD)

you also left out aflw requirements. these could stay at casey and they could occasionally use gosch's and vice versa the afl side.

gosch's would require some community benefit facilities to attract funding, if others can manage this i don't see why we couldn't. gosch's would also need some decision on soccer/nrl. can't see all 3 staying harmoniously. at least one would need to leave.

There will be money up for grabs in the next six months for organisations that have projects ready to go.

Following the GFC we saw that schools and community groups that already had plans in place were the ones immediately given stimulus funding.  This of course meant that the money for projects was not necessarily awarded according to 'need', but rather who could get their projects started the quickest to get people working.

I was working at a school at the time that didn't have a pressing need for a new science lab, but they had just so happened to have drawn up renovations specs as part of their ten year plan.  That lab was almost immediately funded and built.

So, I think there will be an opportunity.

Met a mate in that cafe. It was jumping. Probably full of filth employees bludging but it was certainly turning a dollar. 

I suspect social clubs, like pubs have been hit by drink driving laws, but I think they have a place as long as they are part of a home base which should include a club museum along with admin offices. Having seen the Hawks museum, and the Bombers and the Pies halls of fame I can vouch for the fact they are very evocative and have real appeal to diehards. It's a shame we have nothing like that. Even Fitzroy has a space at Docklands given over to old Lions memorabilia. 

Those who attended Gutnick's fund raiser back in '96 would remember the Demons memorabilia in the old change rooms where that event took place. It was wonderful old stuff that is otherwise unseen. I reckon a home base, with a museum cum Hall of Fame, training and office base and social event spaces would still work, especially in the vicinity of the MCG because it is so well served by public transport.

It would also give the players a sense of their place in history. Imagine story boards about the great unexpected victory of 1926, the arrival of Checker, the achievements of Bluey in the Battle of Britain as well as on the field, the other blokes lost in war, the Red Fox story board, the extraordinary achievement of two triple premierships, the indigenous Demons, the Northey and Daniher revivals...there is so much material to work with to make a brilliant museum and Hall of Fame that would be an enormous drawcard.

That is a long winded way of saying I respectfully disagree.
