Any danger that these clowns could fund something themselves  ?

As far as I'm concerned the only appropriate use of government funding for Geelong would be to build a decent bypass around so none of us need to enter the bloody joint.

Ummm...

Though you can still see the gaudy (government funded) floodlight towers.

Must say that was the first thing that came to mind. The scoreboard doubles as an advertising billboard so why should taxpayers foot the bill.

Has Jeeelong ever paid for anything itself

FFS😡

I'm sure Todd from Barwon Heads will be happy with more taxpayer $$$ for that dump of a stadium.

The upgrade at Casey Field was funded to the tune of $5mill by the State Government and look at the positive outcome for the local community. Watch when we need funds for Caulfield there will be zilch. Four million could go to improving the ambulance system, health system, education system I could go on but no it goes to a safe Labor seat and only benefits the Geelong Football Club who already makes millions from benefits afforded to the Club by the State Government..

It seems that football ovals in the middle of race course is the new thing.

AFL heavyweights have expressed an interest in building ovals and change room facilities in the centre of Moonee Valley racecourse under a long-term lease agreement.

Such a development could provide a high-performance centre for umpires, act as a training base for visiting interstate teams and help service the sport’s growing demands at suburban level.

Several sporting organisations – including soccer, rugby and a golf driving range company – were all looking to lodge submissions with Moonee Valley Racing Club as part of an expression of interest process to utilise the course’s infield. Submissions closed last Friday.

I thought they were turning the middle of MVRC into a [censored] load of crappy apartments?

No, its the western side of the racecourse for the apartments.

No apartments inside the track, as it would obscure the racing.

what impact do you think, if any, on our project?

Huh? The western side is the grandstand. Not sure how they'd fit ovals in the middle

Forgive my ignorance, Red. I spent many years in the past living in the area but have never been to MV racecourse. Watching animals being flogged isn't my bag

Should make it easier if anything assuming no massive community backlash.

Our issue is oval exclusivity (even modified exclusivity). This proposal will include a degree of exclusivity so as a community softener it's good for us.

Of course MFCSS suggests that we could become the AFL's sacrificial lamb.

Behind the grandstand is where the apartments are going. A new grandstand is being built in front of the new longer straight on the Northern side.

Not getting into an argument about horse racing, but I can assure you they are among the best cared for animals on earth.

A 550 kg horse, hit with a three by one inch piece of flexible soft leather, a few restricted times, on its flank, does not hurt the horse. Most of the time the jockey is waving the whip and not actually using it.

If it did hurt the horse, you would see them react, like shying, bucking etc.

Except when they break a leg and get killed

Yes that's true.

168 horses died from racing injuries in the last year and that was the highest in many years.

It would be great if that number was zero.

There were over 19000 races in Australia last year averaging 12 - 14 starters.

Lets say 13 by 19000 = 247000 horses raced.

That is 1 death in 1470 starters.

That is a far lower rate, than horses who die from non related racing injuries, like a paddock incident.

Other animals like dogs for example, die from a myriad of causes, even run over by cars in large numbers.

Other animals are bred to be food for humans, not really great lives.

I would say racehorses are generally treated exceptionally well, compared to some other animals.

Unfortunately humans die in sports too.

There were 913 deaths in organised sports, with 89% being male In Australia last year.

Should we ban all sport and breeding of all animals?

PS: Now back to the thread, training grounds.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
