True, but should we have been giving him a few 'scratch match' games first so we feel confident enough to play him for 70-75% game time, rather than 50%?

Once his fitness and confidence rises then he could be terrific for us, but I felt as though we got away with bringing him in a little too soon.

I dunno, I think bringing him in as soon as we did would've helped him psychologically. The more anticipation for his first match, the more pressure he would've felt along the way. He's now got those first game nerves out of the way, and the next time he laces up the unwanted attention and scrutiny will be considerably lessened.

But yes, we were fortunate to get away with it.

I'm done with Goodwin. Have tried to give him the benefit of the doubt recently, but he's officially lost the plot. We've got blokes that can't execute basic skills and we're keeping this guy out. Before it was because he couldn't play the required minutes, now it's because he needs to work on areas of his game.

Either he needs to undergo some Buckley style reinvention or he has to go.

Not enough storming towards the 50 and kicking it like he's got a wooden leg.

I can only assume the things they want him to work on are defensive intent. Which I would be fine with, except half of our team gets a game regularly despite being horrible at two way running and defending.

We have to melbournise him first then he can come into the team.

Ffs he betta be in the side this week. It’s not like we have an abundance of goal kickers in our side.

It’s like when people drive, road rules are optional which is the same as when u play for Melbourne, defence is optional ?

Team has worst forward line in history.... bloke kicks 4 goals in reserves...

"Yeah look Harley we need you to tackle more and worry less about scoring goals. Try to take on four opposition players at once and create more congestion, that's what we really want to see. Goals aren't the aim of the game, we need congestion and repeated entries into 50 amounting to nothing"

Great coach we've got...

Instead he plays VDB who could barley move on Sunday, had a whopping 1 kick and had the awareness of someone who'd been plucked off the street that morning and played their first ever game of football.

We're losing games on Thursday nights.

Half this board still whips themselves in to a frenzy with any mention of Roos and defensive mantra.

Yet Goodwin tries to get a defensive plan sorted so we have a base to build on and he’s an awful coach?

Melksham is the only guy who I think is really disappointing with his defensive efforts right now and he’s playing as our second key forward.

We had a defensive plan already. Roos nailed it, despite having a terrible backline compared to now.

Goodwin wanted to add attack, which was the right decision. But somehow we ended up being crap at both. It's a real talent to ruin everything.

Goodwin will be gone by rd10 when we are 1-9. He is a moron. It’s plain and simple. TMac has been given 26 rounds to work on his game. VIney keeps falling over at every contest and continually blazes away inside 50, but he is all good. Get stuffed simple Simon...

Roos’ defensive plan was to chuck everyone in the backline, drag the other team down to our level and then beat them with experience. It was rubbish but enough to see us through 14/15. We weren’t even trying to lock the ball forward and defend the whole ground in those years. It’s pretty easy to keep the oppositions scores down if you have no attacking intent.

Goodwin’s zone defending and change the angle corridor ball movement - with the basis of a fit decent group of veterans led to our best coached season in 2016. The same plan worked well enough until the end of 2018.

5 of our back 7 and the two wingers have played almost no football together. Our forward line had 2 guys who have barely played in years and Kozzie in his second game. There’s a lot of change from last year yet alone 2018.

The forward press leaks like a sieve and we can’t hit the side of a barn going inside 50. The coach has to fix those problems. I can’t blame him if he’s using selection to fix problem A before turning to problem B.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
