Who will be available then? Pickett and Taylor may be available.

Suggestions?

Don't have a suggestion though this is an interesting situation. Given we have no other picks to really bundle up and move 28 higher (exclude 97 as it is valueless), this articles says Melbourne are 1 or 4 clubs hamstrung and cannot trade future picks on Draft night unless a 2020 first round comes back to us https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-draft-2019-future-picks-2020-draft-indicative-draft-order/news-story/9d34c5ddb8cc52e6b8b52310da7979dd

This simple means either we are taking someone at 28..... or some other creativeness will be required with 10 to move 28 up.

Use 28 on a small forward. There will likely be a few out of Pickett, Taylor, Williams, Cahill available at this pick. Would prefer Taylor of that lot.

Alternately draft a half back like Gould, Bianco, Rivers if we think they slide.

Realistically though this pick is going to be a small forward. Would be staggered if it's not.

Probably won’t be a small forward if we take Weightman at 10 though.

However, I think it’s likely we split 10.

I find it interesting that they have Lockhart training as a small defender (from reports).  To me this suggests that they must intend to draft at least one specialist small forward and maybe even two.  I thought Lockhart is one of the few on the list that might be able to play this role - too early to know if Bedford, Chandler etc will make it but it's one of the hardest positions to play so the odds are stacked against them in any case.

Why would we split 10? As it stands I believe we have 5 list spaces to fill - 3, 10, 28 and looking strongly like we'll pick up Brown and Bennell. Unless I'm missing something?

10 and 28 is what I meant. Apologies.

Pretty sure Lockhart set up the play of half back when playing in Tassie. Not sure where he played at Casey, but he has good skills and vision. Long term replacement for Nev?

If we keep pick 28 i think Will Gould will be a possibility to be available

other options at 28 would be Jeremy Sharp, Jack Mahoney, Dylan Williams,  Darcy Cassar, Elijah Taylor and Hugo Ralph-Smith

Clearly I’m a little biased being good mates with his Dad but here’s an article out of today’s West about Riley Garcia.
He goes alright this lad and wouldn’t be too far out of calculations at pick 28.

List needs:

1. Small forward if we don’t go one at 10

2.  Key defender - especially if we see Petty as a forward

3. Lock down defender - Hibberd/Jetta replacement

4. Speed and classy kicking runner

Forwards: Elijah Taylor / Jack Mahoney

Tall defender: Sam De Koning

Backline grunt: Will Gould / Trent Rivers

Classy run: Hugo Ralph-Smith / Jeremy Sharp / Rivers / Trent Bianco / Will Day

Trent Rivers would be my dream pick up as he does just about everything at a high level as a defender. Kick, run it out, intercept, contest in the air and on the ground. But I’m sure he’ll go top 20.

We need an Elijah Taylor thread. Although Taylor picking Taylor might be a bit too Inception for some.

Yeah agree with this, surprised there hasn’t been more talk linking him with us as on paper he sounds like just what we need and has been rated higher than Pickett in all the draft articles. Might go a bit earlier than 28 though.

Anybody got any info on him?

Taylor or Pickett.  Failing those if they don't get through...Schoenburg ...if he gets through!

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
